POP ALBUM REVIEW: The Loneliest Time by Carly Rae Jepsen

I'm also really glad she doesn't depend on Jack the way many other pop girls do. Even though she is sometimes lumped in the same group as other pop girls for collaborating with him, she's only done a handful of songs with him her whole career, despite the fact that she was the first pop act to collaborate with him back in 2012.

In the last few years, Carly has been talking in interviews that writing a musical is one of her dream goals, so it could very well happen.

i have to defend go find yourself or whatever. it fits the lonely theme so perfectly and she conveys her emotions so well that said loneliness, heartbreak, and subtle hopelessness become palpable. it feels like we get to see carly at her core with this song, tying in the theme of the album perfectly.

the way bends and go find yourself or whatever are my absolute favourites on the record, they’re a level of mature i didn’t know she had access to and feel perfect walking through the autumn leaves rn

She deserves so much more credit.

The album is not even remotely cohesive but I adore it and love Carly. We’re blessed to be living in the same timeline

The Loneliest Time, Western Wind, and Go Find yourself or Whatever are probably my favorite three here. Big surprise album for me. Making me go back and pay attention to her entire discography.

I was so excited for this record when Western Wind released and I wasn't disappointed! Yeah, I still think Beach House is incredibly corny. But I love to see CRJ experiment with new sounds and I love how she's branching out. This is such a great autumn album for me. I have so many favorites -- Surrender My Heart, Joshua Tree, Talking to Yourself, Shooting Star, Go Find Yourself or Whatever. I think Dedicated/Emotion and their Side Bs still rank higher for me on her discography, but I enjoyed this project a lot and will definitely be _making a comeback_ to it :)

Love your reviews and agree with everything you said! Especially liked the point about cohesion in an album not always being a good thing, which is especially resonant that Midnights came out on the same day as this. That album suffers from having such a singular mood, it becomes monotonous to listen to, whereas even the worst songs on this album always manage to keep me interested

I actually loved Beach house! it's a fun track and I work out to it. But Joshua tree, Shooting star and No thinking over the weekend have been my faves! this album is full of surprises, just full of different stuff and they're a gem to listen to. I find that Emotion and Dedicated+B was like... describing a story of sorts? This album is very all over the place, like snapshots and I really love it. She's been my fave artist since 2012, and I love hearing people talk about her music and react to how she grows as an artist!

The slander on So Nice! Haha kidding, I just love that TLT being the beautiful ‘uncohesive’ record that she is has something for everyone. Agree with your top 3 though I’ll probably switch Shooting Star with Anxious or Bad Thing Twice but SS is definitely a toptier banger. I just kinda miss the original mix in Disco Sweat I guess. I agree with you about the length of Surrender My Heart, but it has truly become my second fav Carly song. I saw her in Chicago and she had just added it to the setlist. The crowd erupted. I can listen to it on a loop.

Ngl, Beach House is one of my most replayed songs off the album. I didn’t like it at first either but it has grown on me immensely.

Not calling Rufus Wainwright the guy from the Shrek soundtrack 😭😭😭 I get it he’s niche! He’s Canadian! 😭😭😭

I agree to everthing maybe except to beach house and GFYOW. Beach House is so fun to listen while working out or running some errands while GFYOW sounds so heart breaking to me. And I love heart-wrenching songs 😅

Far Away is an absolute fav! Not with that at all.

At first I really didn't have high hopes for this one. The singles that had come out really just felt devoid of the feeling and emotion from her previous albums and came across as hollow. That being said, it's actually a damn good listen. Almost every track on this is really what I want and expect from her. When you listen to it as a whole, it even brings in some of those singles I was less than enthusiastic about and makes them fit to where I actually like them. However, BEACH HOUSE IS STILL TERRIBLE. It still sounds like 3 separate songs that might be fine on their own, but together just don't work for me. It's especially jarring when the album flows so well from the start only to hit the brick wall that is that song and immediately following is another track (Bends, which is fantastic, so shame on you, lol) that would've flowed perfectly with the ones before it. I would definitely have liked to see the bonus tracks of "Anxious" and "Keep Away" included as standard tracks and have "Beach House" relegated to a "bonus track" so that folks won't be readily subjected to it as frequently. As far as your "skips", Beach House is the only one that really qualifies, imo. "Go Find Yourself or Whatever" I think it's a song that unless you've got a certain amount of age on you (whether through time alone, trauma/loss, or both) it won't immediately connect with you the same way. Personally, I found myself really thinking about the past and how I'm at peace with it (all the good and bad that was done to me) and can just get stoned and vibe a bit. I can't decide on a favorite track or tracks yet, so I'm feeling it out a bit more. I do get why you like "Shooting Star" though, she's got that playful power feel to it. I literally messaged my friend when I started listening and told him "horny CRJ is back, baby!", lol. Personally, I gave it a B+ overall, so it seems like we had similar takes for the album as a whole, but different preferences for certain songs.

Oh I will NOT tolerate the Beach House and GFYOW slander

This album suffers from boredom in half of the songs. Midnights from TS suffer from the same but at least midnights stopped at track 13. Both Lonliest and Midnights albums would have been better off as an EP, or 8-track album. Leave the rest boring and monotonous filler tracks to fans on an special edition. To my surprise Harry's House can be listened from top to bottom easily. Midnights and Loneliest will be forgettable projects.
