Hi Petrol Ped, looked at the tour but it’s not clear on the website if the go karting and entry to SPA race is included in the price of the tour? I would have thought that would be listed in the “what’s included section”?
Love the commentary from a regular, car loving person like yourself. So tired of the wealthy RU-vidrs with collections of pricey cars. You genuinely appreciate these cars, as opposed to some, who change them like watches. I wish you many many happy miles.
I Have To Agree About Not Wanting To Know Anything About How You Financed Your Car Or Anything Else For that Matter ,As a Car Nut I Only Watch to See the Cars And As Soon as People Start Pushing Finance and Other Things I Don't Watch Anymore. After Owning a Subaru UK300 Your Car Does Not Sound Like it ,It Sounds More Like A Powerful VW Beetle as it Does Not Have the Gruff Offbeat Subaru Sound.
Have just taken delivery of a 2024 Boxster GTS 4.0l Manual here is Aust. (3 weeks old), Love it. Metallic Black, Guards Red Dials and Seatbelts. Extended Aluminium pack with extensive leather and Race Teck interior. Love it. I'd imagine there's not much performance difference between the 4.0 and the 2.5 but would expect the way they make power and the driving experience to be different. Not better or worse just different. Came out of a PDK 981s. The PDK is a brilliant gearbox but the manual just suits the GTS in my opinion!. Only regret is that I went for the 2 way sports seats and not the 18 way sports seats. Just getting in and out is much easier with the 18 way seats. Hope you do get to compare the 4.0l and 2.5l back to back soon.
The gts boxter is quite the sportscar. I like it better than the 911 because it's something meant to be driven daily without reservations or being too pretentious or hard edge. The handling dynamics are so wonderful when you push it and that incredible level of confidence at 9/10ths pace, and that sound with the top down just perfect!
I test drove a new GTS 4 litre because that's all the dealer had, but really wanted to try a 2.5 (as that's all I was prepared to pay). Two days later I got that opportunity. I've watched so many YT videos on Porsche's and owners preferences/bias, the 911 v anything else, but also the 6 v 4 cylinders. If there's a perceived snob value in the 911 camp then it seems there's also one in the 6 cylinder camp. At the end of the day we choose what we like (within our personal financial limits). For me, I actually preferred the 2.5, (regardless of the cost difference) although I never did drive the 981 2.7 or 3.4 so I'll never know about those. I get my 2.5 later this week 🤗
You chose wisely, the 2.5 easily the best motor for these. The 4.0 is going to need quite a few mods to get it sounding half decent and it will never have the performance numbers of a tuned 2.5. Well done. My 981 gts was quite a soundtrack to drive to but left me wanting for more power, but would still have that over the new 4.0. The 2.5 is just in a different league to the 4.0l thou.
@@Malcom2345I absolutely agree! Porsche did such a great job on this motor, that I believe they dropped it to not surpass the flat 6. Any further development on the 2.5 would leave the N/A flat 6’s look underwhelming, regardless if it was a 911 or 718. Simple tune on the 2.5 bumps it around 440-450hp (APR). That will definitely walk away from a gt4 or most N/A 911’s track or street. GTS 2.5’s with some simple suspension upgrades, already hold their own vs the above mentioned cars. Now toss in that tune……
@@gazzabrownhigh8891you are snob! Lets face 2,5 engine is much better than 6 cylinder. If you want rev the engine to 7-8th. revs buy a motorbike instead!
This is why I love your channel, great car that is appreciated by it’s owner and not some RU-vidr flipping numerous brand new shiny cars that all cost telephone numbers.
I Test drove a 2017 718 Boxster about 3 years ago (Background---I was a Mercedes test driver in Stuttgart for 4 years in the early 2000's... owned a BMW 1-Series over there), and the 718 is, of course, phenomenal! So when Sweetcars got a 2001Boxster S in Seal Gray on consignment, I HAD to pull the trigger--- even with "only" 250 HP from the 3.2-liter SIX, I'm always, Always left with a beaming from grin! AND THE SOUND! Came with Sport Exhaust, and the Symphony from 3500 to 6000 is absolutely addictive! The extra bits and bobs Porsche puts into the Boxster S are Unmistakable and you won't want to live without them once you've experienced the difference! This IS POSSIBLY the most pivotal Series for Porsche, since it's inclusion breathed new life into Porsche sales, and possibly saved the company. It's a piece of Porsche history that cannot be overstated and I never want to give up this car... Only add others! Dream Cars from the Porsche lineup? 997 Turbo S If I'm ever wealthy, A GT3 Touring.
After 3 years and 21,000k’s , the 718 S still put a smile on my face. Every drive is an adventure, be it to the local shops or a 350 kilometre trip to Sydney. Like you, the top is the first thing to drop, the weather being a lot sunnier in Australia although once it gets over 26 Celsius, up goes the top and on goes the A/C. I agree with you, Michelin PS4S’s are the best all rounder tyres.
I like the practical vibe you spin on this review. Much more relatable. Dream cars are awesome but this is a real option more attainable by more of us. Thanks for sharing!
They are lovely and that one’s lovely, though a 987 / 981 Boxster gives you more of an emotional driving experience. I just love the rasp of a Porsche 6
Nice review Pete, so refreshing to get an actual owners opinion. Drive modes in modern cars are amazing, their ability to transform a car is remarkable, the difference between comfort and dynamic in my S4 is like two different cars. Look forward to seeing the drive tour, I share you mixed emotions about the Nordschleife part of me would love to lap it but another part of me has watched too many crash videos 😬
@@PetrolPed Harry’s garage absolutely did a scathing attack on this four-cylinder Boxster In fact he said after one ride in one, he wouldn’t review it or drive it and wasn’t interested in it as it sounds so bad.
I have never been a Porsche fan as I am a JLR fan but I can see the attraction and the noise from the Milltek exhaust enhances the experience I am sure.
When I owned my old 981 Boxster S I had a GTS like yours when it was boing serviced. It was clearly a better car in terms of performance and handling. You could feel subtle improvements everywhere. But when I got my car back, that flat 6 made the experience just better. The 981 Boxster is I think the sweet spot. Get a 981 GTS and you have the best Boxster. I now own a 718 Spyder but because of the OPF the sound has been ruined really. I have a device that stops the valves closing and it helps but still nowhere near the old cars. The Spyder is an amazing car but the soundtrack is missing.
@@Vrefplus10 You certainly won’t get as good a sound from the newer car. Maybe with an exhaust switch you’ll get an improvement but the 981 is a class act.
You are absolutely right about other RU-vidrs who seem every month to be showing off picking up their new car. For me I find it a bit obnoxious and puts me off watching them.
Great video. Good to see a video that doesn’t trash the 2.5L 718 GTS. I purchased a 718 Cayman S last year. Due to production constraints, here in the US I was able to get the S model way earlier than a GTS. In fact, I would probably still be waiting for a GTS allocation. Getting the S allowed for some different exterior and interior options not available on the GTS. Performance-wise, the 2.5L power band is much lower in the rev range - and therefore much more usable - than the 4.0L six. Sound difference? Meh, insignificant to me. The four sounds fine in sport mode. Having come from a MK III Audi TT RS, that five cylinder spoiled me for life. Neither the 2.5L or 4.0L Porsche engines come close to the Audi sound-wise.
Hi Ped I have been eagerly awaiting this video, and have to say it did not disappoint. It too me back to 2016 when I finally decided to fulfill a long held dream to buy a Porsche 911 Carrera S convertible. The search was great experience and it came down to a choice of two, one manual, second PDK. As we were planning continental holidays, it had to be PDK, a choice I never regretted. Our first trip was to Monaco for the Classic meeting. On route in Dijon region had a puncture in rear n/s tyre. Porsche assistance brilliant organised a hire car at no charge for us to continue our journey ( it was a national holiday weekend, everything closed down including Porsche dealers. My car was finally returned to me in Nice 5 days later, and my credit Eu940 lighter for two Pirelli P Zero. As my car was AWD Porsche insisted both tyres on the rear axle have equal tread depth. Oh the joys of Porsche ownership. However I will conclude by saying best and most enjoyable car I have owned.
I bit the bullet January 2022 and swapped the P Zeros on my 981 Boxster S for Michelin P4S's and have not regretted it. A 3700 mile road trip last summer/autumn in the UK made me glad of the switch. Mine had its MOT today and passed with flying colours & the 25 minute warm up drive just reminded me why I bought the car 😁
I put on 225000 kms on my daily original 986. Retired now its like a a VW beetle compared to yours, however still love it to bits. Very little done except standard services, fixed a micro switch, fixing a door handle cable, engine and gearbox mounting rubbers/ bushes, shocks as well as replacing rear plastic window and starter overhaul. Now smoking a bit on start does not need anything serious currently. Some led's died on dashboard and will require a indicator lever recon. That it. Certainly one of the best marques on the planet. PS Did most of work by myself due to you tube videos. Love from Africa..
I can see Porsche's point about the radiator grilles and warranty. It's the same issue with the oil radiator on my BMW R9T motorbike - to fit a grill or not? No doubt Porsche will argue that they have sized the radiators to give adequate cooling in all outside air temperatures with the rad intake unrestricted. Any grill will restrict the flow through the rad, often more so than might seem obvious. For instance, you might still get 90% of the airflow with a grill in place, but that airflow will be turbulent having passed through the grill, and turbulent air will hit the rad at odd angles and might not flow through the rad core in a linear and relatively unrestricted fashion. Chances are in UK it won't matter as we don't often get air temps much above 35C whereas the car is probably speced to operate in much higher temps than that. But you know Germans - rules is rules; they designed it the way it is, not the way you've modded it!
I see THE Boxster smile on your face. A Great Video, as usual. My car is almost identical to your car. I have the 2ltr PDK model with S+ and in the same external colour as yours. It has your GTS front and rear end which makes this 718 model pop. The Extra kit includes the additional coolant radiator in the mid-front that your car has as standard. I have the Zansport grills too and have added my DIY side grills inside the cowlings so that it does not spoil the car's looks. My interior is two-tone leather with a black dash and red seating. I have been lucky enough to have had 4 Boxsters over the past 20 years and the boxer 4-cylinder turbo 718 is the cream of the crop. You mention the low-down torque. This is what makes the difference when in everyday driving. My previous 981 2.7lt had to be set to sport most of the time when negotiating normal 2-lane roads to "keep it on the boil" (as did my other 6-cylinder S 986 model). I don't need to use the sport mode so frequently in the 718. It just powers through without the need to change down. I guess some drivers prefer a manual Gearbox to introduce more drama in their driving. Each to their own. I was lucky enough to test all three 718's at Porsche Experience Centre Silverstone when they were first introduced. I could not tell the difference in performance between the 2.0ltr and 2.5ltr S. The 718 GTS seems better in the cornering due to the ceramic brakes that were fitted to the test car. They gave a better feel and grip in the tight corners but when will I be doing that on the public highway? So, after the Porsche test, I decided to purchase the 2ltr with the GTS Bodypack. All my Boxsters have lived active lives by going to the European Alps every year. I live in the North East of Scotland where the roads allow me to travel all over North Scotland, including the Western Isles, and it is always a great pleasure driving a Porsche here (less traffic) as well as in the Alps. So, happy Boxstering and have a great time on your Podium Trip. NB: I would hold back on taking your car on track at Nurburgring. It's other drivers you have to watch out for! Go as a passenger with someone else. Yes, "what a dream" car. Smiles all the way! flic.kr/p/2jmNXXn flic.kr/p/M3ihQp
Such a beautiful no compromises driver's car. This is the car I want to graduate to from my MX-5 ND2 and I keep dreaming about being completely irresponsible and bringing one home.
Great video and review. I still love my 981 S Boxster. These mid engine Porsche really are the sweet spot. Looking forward to this years driving season.
Beautiful car. PDK provides the best of both worlds. I like what you've done with the shape and colour of the number plates, as well as the other additions/mods.
Lovely car Pete. I went from a 981 Cayman S to 718 GTS 2.5. Both great cars 😃. The wife walked past just as you were talking about the Milltek and told me not to get any ideas 😂. Mine is pre OPF so has bit more of a rumble to start with. Keep the videos coming.
Definitely drive a lap or two of the Ring if you can. Did it for the first time last year and it was honestly the most exhilarating and satisfying track driving I've ever done. Keeping it safe rather than fast, but still a lot of fun.
Lovely lovely cars, our first Porsche was a Boxster, still have fond memories of it. We now have Porsches five and six!, don't say your weren't warned 😀
Good for you Pete. I owned a 718 S Cayman and loved it. I think the 4 cylinder engines are hugely underrated and 100% true Porsche despite what some might say. I now own a 4.0 GTS Cayman and whilst it has a lot more lower end torque than the 3.8l 981 lump it can't match the 2.5l turbo for the bottom end grunt. Personally, I like searching for the power amongst the higher revs. Exhilarating on spirited road trips and track days. Enjoy your road trips this year! Keep up the great work.
The front end turn-in looked so positive with the new tyres, even on a cold and damp day. GTS spec is always the best deal on a Porker, like having clean urinals all to yourself at the Pub. 😁😄🤣
Fantastic GTS, I am a big fan of the BoxEngine be it flat four or six, the four has its own advantages just like the six, both engines are deeply rooted in Porsche history. Those who want performance can opt for the four with its tune-ability and those who like the sound of the flat six can enjoy their cars. I really I hope to see more content on your GTS and please do a comparison with the almighty 4.0 engine.
Yes would be interesting with your impressions of the new 4.0 over this. No brainer for me, my tuned and straight piped. 2.5s is just too good over what was for me a dull alternative.
Love the look of Lady P. I think the sound is great. It has its own sound and without doubt the power delivery is a step up on the flat 6 that’s in my 981. The tour sounds epic. id love to do that but we will have just returned from a family hol so too soon for me. Maybe next year though. And for what its worth, I did the Nurburgring a few years ago and did one lap late on a Friday evening when it was pretty clear. It’s an incredible experience unlike any other road/track. Once i’d done it once, it was ticked off and then I just enjoyed watching everyone else with a beer in my hand. The roads around the ring are also incredible.
Nice to read that you enjoyed the Ring. I'am lucky i "only" live 290km from the Nürburgring. I have visited it a many times since 2008. About 9 years i have driven it with a seasoncard so i could drive so many laps as i wanted. I have driven there with a Honda S2000 and a R53 GP. My first lap was with a Triumph Stag, it was before RU-vid got big and i didn't know how the road was going.🤣and i had no track experience. @Pete: I recommand to take a taxi lap first before driving yourself. And 30 April will be very busy because it is a long weekend Green Hell Driving days. I will be at the Ring with Eastern, but maybe i will be there at 30 April too, because i would like to see you enjoying the Nürburgring.😉 I have a link of a lap in my Mini GP, filmed on a very empty Ring. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M3Kt8h9CzIo.html Read nuerburgring.de/info/company/gtc/driving-regulations and nuerburgring.de/driving/touristdrives/safety-regulations before driving on the Ring.
Feels like the Boxster is the gift that keeps on giving and the GTS 4.0 is the one that I would choose. £62K is a lot of money for a car but at the same time not a lot of money for the continuous enjoyment. Residuals are really strong and always have been. I’d be surprised if you don’t get at least £45k back after 3 years and 30k miles. That’s less than £500 a month depreciation. Enjoy the motoring. I hope to get a Boxster when the time is right. 😅
After being offered the new 4.0l on my recent service, couldn’t wait to get back in my Turbo 718 S, such a better car, the 4.0 was slow, dull and soulless in comparison.
What an absolutely awesome car! At this moment I can only dream of owning a car like that. But I am saving hard. " Dreams can come true " Great video and I look forward to seeing more. I think I will go back and watch it again. 😜
It can be a question of how much you want it. If moving house, going on holiday having more kids, eating out, smoking are all less important its more likely to happen. We dont know if ICE prices will dive or rocket with electrification. I think they will rise, people want what the government tries to stop them having
Just imagine having a spare tyre in the car. Then we could be on our way within 15 minutes, and buy whatever we wanted, at the best price we could find, when we got home.
Hi Pete, surely a decent PDK has to be the best of both worlds ! I think the spec of this car is spot on and the ppf really is a sensible addition. Very much looking forward to your upcoming videos covering the “drive trip” it would be superb if you could get a lap with Misha Charoudin on the Nordschleife 🤣😀. It does seem in France you were royally ripped off re the tyres, there is a great argument for space saver spare wheel 😉 Ps the bike that overtook you was a BMW K1600 GTL, it’s an inline 6 cylinder, 1600cc, 160bhp, crazy torque bike, he had oodles in reserve and probably had a better view of the road ahead than you did, lol😀
Great review of your awesome car. Very honest and genuine! So glad you love your car Sir Pete. I need new tires on my camaro it’s gonna be about 1400 dollars for the set of 4. I’ll be praying your tour is fun safe and a all around great time!
Lovely little car Pete. That exhaust certainly changes your perception of what engine you are running. Nice deep burble from that exhaust hides what it is. So yours is the 4 Cyl - It does not sound like a 4 Cyl
Great video Pete, and look forward to the comparison with the 4.0. I drove the 718 base 2.0 with PDK and loved it, but I think the GTS has the right amount of power. However you can get a Z4 M40i for under £35k now and that’s a big saving over £50k. I’m not saying it’s on par, but it makes a decision like this really hard if you’re in the market for a convertible. A buddy of mine took me out in his 987 boxster with a 2.7 and manual shift which he picked up for less than £6K on eBay, what a car. I thought it would disappoint boy I was wrong.
Turbo and double clutch for the win. Had a tdi and dsg combo and I thought it worked really well. And on the south of planet UK there’s just too much traffic!
Great video Ped love that you have gone over to 4k I’m very jealous of your car but I know that I will never own a car like this but back in the day I had a lotus Cortina MK1 then I had a Triumph Dolomites Sprint followed by a Renault Gt Turbo MK1and my best car I have ever owned was a 3 litre BMW convertible that was my favourite car ever
I can’t wait to get my Porsche Cayman 😊😊 love it 😍 Get the i30N ring taxi it is absolutely brilliant. I wouldn’t drive the ring ever again it’s a horrible experience not knowing the track and cars flying past ! !
Beautiful car and great to see you enjoying it 👍 …. Will look forward to your video on the financing of it. As you say, in the real world it’s a major commitment for most of us!
That exhaust adds a lot to the driving experience. Compare the noise of this to the Boxster T I drove on my channel. Yours sounds a lot less ‘breathy’.
Does sound better with that Miltek on it Pete 👍🏻 Driven a number of Caymans through work & did consider one before the covid price hike 🤦 but although the 718 is no doubt a better car, I preferred the 981 flat 6 engine. The road trip sounds epic !
Purchased my first Boxster recently, 987.2 Black Edition and for me personally the flat 6 is a must have as part of the Porsche experience but certainly not knocking anyone who disagrees. This looks amazing and I’ve read that the 718 steering is perfection. Also trying finance for the first time as the residuals on these are very strong so should build up a good amount of equity in the car over a 2/3 year ownership and then upgrade to a 981 Cayman GTS!
Having my first coffee for the morning in NSW Australia and enjoying your Porsche drive experience, thanks for sharing. Ps Charlie and George schnauzers have gone back to bed, they don’t like cars with no backseats lol😂.
Just extended my warranty on my Cupra, they do a package which includes AA breakdown 2mot and servicing for £35 a month which I thought was good value.
Great update Pete, looking forward to your upcoming videos, especially a comparison with the GTS 4.0. I have a 2020 4.0 manual in crayon, well spec’d, if your ever in the north east your more than welcome to use it. Safe driving.
Hi Pete - great review! I bought my 718 Boxster 2.0 from Harbour Cars in Chichester 2 years ago - shout out to Sam and Geoff - utterly professional, no pressure and lovely guys to boot. Would thoroughly recommend for a used Porsche (my first) - oh and second the Zunsport grilles - looks great and vital in protecting the otherwise open radiators - a design flaw which could be easily remedied as in the GT cars you mentioned
Hi Ped. I have a modified base model Cayman with 450bhp with hybrid turbo, water methanol injection, Ohlins suspension etc. would you like to do a comparison video where you could drive both back to back? Might be interesting to see your opinion of GTS or modified ? Happy to come to you 👍
As always, a fantastic episode. I agree with previous rely where they ask you not to talk on financing. I too will pay cash for large ticket items. I never borrow or loan money to buy anything at all. I’m so happy that your still in love with you whip even after almost a year after your purchase. That’s wonderful. Congrats again. Very nice car PP.... And a great video to tell us all about it... A few laps in a ring taxi would be my advice... then Maybe a few gentle laps in Lady P.... I had a lap driven by Bernd Schneider in the F1 Merc Medical Car... He was one of the Drivers giving all the Mclaren personnel a "Fast" Lap... Approaching the first corner he let us know the brakes were Not there best!!! So he just chucked it sideways to scrub off speed...What a driver!!! Best Car trip in my Life..... :-)) ps: Don`t forget Silverstone Auction for my GRT wheel... It will look amazing in your Office.... :-)
I have a suggestion: if you haven’t yet, start playing the most recent iterations of the Gran Turismo video game for PlayStation. It is a great way to learn some of the world-famous racing tracks, especially the Nordschleife, short of a simulator. I am not joking: you will learn the track and how to drive it. I sincerely hope you have a great time with your beautiful Porsche, which I know you will because it is evident that you truly enjoy and appreciate driving such a gem.
