Pouring Concrete In The Rain! - New Pole Barn Floor // My Brother's Barn Part 3

It hasn't rained in 3 weeks but the day we plan to pour concrete the radar starts to show signs of trouble. We used the John Deere 310SE to help prep the site and a Volvo E55B to dig some utility trenches before we began the concrete pour on my brother's new pole barn. Also, the John Deere 755 was instrumental in helping to prep the site and remove excess material and backfill trenches. The front discharge cement trucks showed up early in the morning and brought storm clouds behind them but we were still able to get the new concrete floor finished in my brother's barn. It turned out to be a very fruitful day and the results of the effort put forth were great.

I copied this barn very closely. I loved it and had the Amish build my brow over the big garage doors just like that! Only thing I really changed was my man door is on the front with the same style overhang and I have a man door on the back as well. Turned out awesome!

Best part was the moving of the trusses? Imagine getting pulled over by a random state trooper with those rigged up like that? Similar thing happened to me. I was pulling an old Oliver disc harrow from one end of our farm to the other on the shoulder of the public road with my truck. Random state trooper came by, saw me, whipped around, pulled me over, and said "You can't do that." I said, "What?" he said "pull whatever that is on the road." After I asked how real farmers did it he thought up his defense and said I had to have a orange triangle on the back....... Cause we all know an orange triangle makes everything better! Great job as usual!

We are certainly fortunate that there isn't much patrolling going on out in these parts. Haven't seen a police car in years go up and down these roads. I can only image what they'd think seeing this go down the road! I didn't think of the orange triangle... We have one that's on the back of the golf cart used when travelling the same roads in it! Thanks for checking it out sir!

First comment - I never thought a guy who's never seen a piece of heavy equipment he doesn't have or want would say that anything other than heart surgery on immediate family members is best left to an expert, much less concrete work. Concrete is probably the most DIY'ed thing on Earth. Second comment - that's a lot of barn if you're not farming. You guys out in corn country have a great lifestyle. I hope you never have to move.

when i built my pole barn i drilled holes in each post that was in the ground and inserted little pvc pipes with a 90 degree angle on them and i fill them up with oil. It lasts quite a while and keeps the part of the beam thats in the ground soaked with oil so they dont rot

Oh, how clever!!! While you were toting those trusses, Take Me Home Country Road was playing in my head. Can you imagine getting away with that in civilization? I put a drain in the parking spot of my shop. Our garage doesn’t have any and we can’t even set a carton in the floor. I don’t know how many pounds of sunflower seeds and deer corn were ruined before I made a wooden pallet to get them out if the pools that drip from the vehicles. Those slanted overhead door entries are the way to go. I even put a 1/2” slant at my walk doors. I just wish there was a way to easily install them in existing floors! They beat a square lip by a country mile! Running a screed board kills my knees and back. I told Dirt Boss I was gonna rent a gas powered screed on my next concrete job. All I needed was to find another concrete pour to try it…. And, just like that Nana came up with one. Next spring she wants a new garage apron poured. The doors leak and… she wants it flattened. So… I got that going for me. However, I will not pour it if there’s a hint of rain. I can’t afford to build a pole barn over it just to keep the rain out…. Like you wealthy corn country boys can!!! 🤓 I’ll see you Thursday.
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy 2 года назад
We get away with using our country roads for all kinds of fun stuff that most folks wouldn't consider! That's the advantage of being "the last stop before nowhere" as my Dad would say. Yep, we've found those floor drains to be a must come snow melt season. And the slanted entry really helps keep that rain from blowing in under the door, although in the heaviest winds it still manages to get under mine but my doors face west. My brother won't have any trouble as his building's "back" is to the wind but I wouldn't go without the slant. Well congrats on that new concrete project for spring '22! I absolutely love watching concrete getting poured by people that know what they're doing! I'll look forward to your project in that regard as well :) See ya Thursday!

@karuza82
@karuza82 2 года назад
When in doubt, pour it out! Fair advice. Over the long haul the rain will miss more than it'll hit. When it hits it's miserable. Got to watch out for concrete burns on your feet and ankles with water in your boots. Neil on the 755 does your hydraulics allow multi direction of operation simultaneously? For example after dumping a bucket will it allow lowering bucket and curling it back to level at the same time? When my folks first got the 755 either you couldn't do 2 directions at once or it was so slow as to cancel out any advantages. By the time the 955 came it was no longer an issue. Maybe bigger pump, more pressure or different valving. Just curious.
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy 2 года назад
It does allow multi-function but like you suggested, it isn't quick about it. I find myself just doing one function at a time most of the time but when going from the backhoe to the tractor it's hard to stay consistent. Thanks for watching!

Is there any slope to the floor drains? They're super handy but not sure how to efficiently slope a slab and have it both look good and function well. If the floor isn't sloped, how well do the drains work? Thanks.
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy Год назад
There is a slight slope to the drains. I think it was only like an inch of fall. The idea for us is to capture the snow melt off the vehicles. It will run to the drain. My drains and my shopping garage work great like that.
