Part 1 of a 2 part Series
There are many reason why you may be thinking about purchasing a Power Commander. Increased horsepower, fine tuning your racing machine, addition of some aftermarket parts or maybe you just want to dive deeper into your knowledge. ALL ARE VERY GOOD REASONS.
As for me I recently purchased a new motor with 1,600 miles on it. With my previous bolt-on mods of a Yoshi Exhaust and K&N Air filter this made my new engine run lean, thus making the exhaust piping extremely hot (more to it then that but you get what I'm saying). With heat pouring out from the piping this made street riding unbearable. In fact the heat was so bad that it began to warp my cheap chinese fairings and discolor/buble my paint.
Now, don't get what i'm saying about heat confused. The pipes were heating up due the lean condition, not the engine, the engine ran at its normal operating temp and never overheated. The only way to richen out a lean condition is with a fuel manager such as a PC3.

Once you have registered with the site , log in and go to www.dynojet.com/tunes and put in your bikes information in the 5 boxes located just under the picture titled "Tunes" and click go. Your bikes maps should populate and under the downloads column you should see the maps for you modifications. If you see login in this section then you are not logged in and must do so . For my 600 folks looking for a map you will find it under "Power Commander" dropdown AND NOT "Power Commander III USB". The pages are limited to only 10 maps per view and there is a total of 3 pages, so if you don't see your map on the first page be sure to go through all 3 pages . I was there last night and there is no option for 2003 CBR600RR under USB power commander III. It only showed the CBR600 Fi. Under the power commander only drop down there are a bunch of maps that are PVM files or something of the sort but it couldn’t do anything with them.

I have the same problem with 20003 GSX-R 750. There are only PVM files, which are not suitable for my pc3.

@@1Juspero this is starting to be a more common issue as you guys keep reporting, maybe Dyno jet is not aware of. I'll have to hit them up and see. Maybe it can be rectified with a simple email or call.

Ur videos have given me the inspiration and confidence to troubleshoot and remedy if needed several applications outlined in ur videos. My 01 GSXR 1000 has a PC III USB with a custom map that I inherited when purchased. The bike started to backfire when idling after I repaired an exhaust leak at the mid pipe. When I hooked up my laptop, established comms with the PC III and was viewing the custom map I noticed at throtlle position 0, rpms 1000/1500 and 2000 had a -10 defined in the text fields which indicated to me a lean condition which in turn would cause my backfires when idling. I changed these values to 0 and the backfires immediately stopped. I know the bike needs a proper tune which will happen come springtime. THANKS for the informative vids. Much appreiciated....

Kevin, thanks for sharing, greatly appreciate the comment. I'm glad my videos could help you out. Funny story, these videos were never meant to be self helps for RU-vid viewers. My intention was to document my repair jobs as I learned and worked on my own bike, something I could go back to if the problem happened again. I got such a good response from viewers that I continued to record each and every problem that occurred creating what is now some 90 video library over the course of 7 years. While i dont proclaim myself to be an expert I do offer advice and troubleshooting tips to those willing to listen. hope you stick around, I'm always working on something whether it be a repair or modification.

Now my only question is do it matter what PC3 I get? Or is it more just about the maps you download? The PC3 was given to me free

Thanks Brother, does it matter what PC3.. Yes.. a simple net search will result in which one to purchase for your bike..This is primararly do to injector connection type. The maps will dictate the firing or spraying intervals based of the TPS signal (throttle input). Be sure to watch part two so you can see what installation is like.. pretty straight forward stuff.

To Justin Westphal, Follow up on the maps. Once you create a login and look up your bike, you will then be able to save it in your garage. Go to your garage and on the top right you'll see 3 dots, click on those and select browse parts. Select Power Commander III. Then scroll down to Tunes and keep scrolling to the bottom where it says ACCESS TUNES, click on that box. Find your map and download it. Then go through the process of programming. Very easy. I'm late to this video, but for those who are watching, you can't just use anyyy USB ( 7:00 ). It's a USB-A to a USB- Mini B (aka USB mini or mini-USB) not to be mistaken for a Micro USB. The USB-A is what's plugged into the computer and the Mini-B is plugged into the Power Commander.

put a resister in series with the coolant temperature sensor. Tricking the ecu into thinking the bike is cooler then it really is, thus dumping more fuel. putting the fan on a switch might be a good idea(for obvious reasons). 100ohms is a good base to start with and knowing how much the temp reading has changed is crucial.

Kyle - wow, is that a confirmed shipping cost.. if so that's damn outrageous!! There defiantly adding an extra cost in there to make up for the listed low cost. You can buy a battery snap for a buck or 2 and make a more professional looking piece and save yourself 20 bucks..lol

To Justin, you have to be signed in to get any maps. Just create a login and password and then when you get into your year, make and model, you will see options to get maps. Follow James' tutorial from there and you'll see them. Good luck. Todd

Quite crude. You can only make changes for every 20 % throttle position in the higher percentages. That was a surprise. I think you can adjust more with an ECU flash.

I know im a little bit late on this one so i have a 06 750 gsxr when i bought it it all ready has a power comander but i cant really tell what generation is it my question is do they get married once u updated to a computer n connect to bike ? Also if i get a newer comander will i have to unmarried the old one n married the new one or is it just plug n play? I been wanting to do some upgrades on my bike but this thing is stopping me from pulling the plug and buy some aftermarket parts.

No marriage here brother. Divorce the two by pulling the plug and connecting everything up as normal and the bike returns to stock. Think of the power commander more as a translator with its own agenda, a man in the middle if you will. The ECM says one thing (Add Gas)--->[PCIII Translates (add MORE Gas)]---->Injectors (GOT IT... MORE GAS). The injectors never even heard the ECM... haha Everything remains on the PCIII.. That's why when you sell it to someone else they need to go in and clear that stored MAP and add the one specific to their needs.

You can always download a map with your specifications, exhaust or air filter, off the DynoJ website. The question you should be asking yourself is if the power commander already has a map in it that already has programming specific to your bike. Have you hooked up the power commander to your PC to see if one is not already installed or are you just assuming that it's not there?

Thank you for this video. I got a 104-410 PC3 and I just mapped it. It has an option Shifter Kill. As I read online, I should have an ignition module, but it seems that PC3 controls both injection and ignition. Does anyone have an idea about this? (It's about a Quickshifter)

No, the map is written to the eprom chip inside the PC3. If this is your issue it's something else like a fuse or some other underline issue.

Hi, I have such a problem when turning on the ignition on a motorcycle and when three buttons are pressed, the green slider starts to run, stops and goes out, and thus does not allow manual adjustments. What could it be? power is supplied from the battery.

If your PClll is already wired up to your bike then you can just hook the usb to it and your laptop and turn the bike on to supply power to the PClll? And download and install from that point?

Technically yes, but there are some PCiii that will go to sleep once you switch on the ignition to accessory mode and those will require to bike to be running in order to tune or you just simply connect the 9v battery to maintain power.

I keep getting an error msg when trying to send map to power commander. Mines hooked up to the bike. I turn the bike on, plug it into my laptop. The laptop does find the device. Then I load the map I want. But keep getting "error sending map" msg Also mine is the older power commander 3. No usb connection. Port on back of the commander

@@TheChemistDIY It won't even load the previous map. The commander powers up when I turn the bike on. The green lights come on. It's the older PC3. So no usb port on the back of the PC3. When I open up the PC3 software I dont even get the green lights in the rpm or throttle area. So I can't even load the previous map.

@@DocteurAlimentation You didnt anwers the question. Have you tried disconnecting the PC3 and hook everything up normally to confirm that the issue is not with the bike.. Sounds dumb but we have to start with the base reading first and that's a fully functional bike before connecting the PC3 in-line. Once you confirm that the bike runs without the PC3 we then can move to troubleshooting the PC3.. and that's bench testing (not connected to the bike).. Dyno ject has a bench test here . dynojet.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003901114-Power-Commander-III-How-to-Reset-a-PCIIIUSB- If it still does not boot or communicate after bench testing then we can confirm that your PC3 is done..

James can the PC 3 be remapped with the laptop connected to it while in the bike without a 9 volt adapter?

Michael Doucette, yes but the bike will have to be running (Live tune). From my experience if you turn the key to just the accessory position power is given for a few seconds for priming and then kills the power shutting down the PC3. You can try of course but like i said that has been my experience with my PC3. I have seen one video where a guy was able to keep power on to the pc3 with just the accessory on but this may very with older to newer versions of the unit.

Hello, can you help me about a problem? I didn't found on the dynojet website a map that can my PCIII software to read it. What can I do next? I buy an used PCIII and the previous owner tell my that the PCIII dinn't have a map on it. I can do something with it, or resell it?

whats up brother. I find it odd that the previous owner of your PCIII didn't have a map on it if it came off his bike. Most people who sell their used PC3 wont go through the extra effort to erase the map off the unit which leads me to believe that his unit was defective when selling it to you.. that's assuming if your having trouble uploading a new map. Take for instance my PC3 which I purchased off of eBay, this unit came to me from a person who had it on his bike and had a map on it and since he knew it was going to be reprogrammed he left it on. If your having trouble finding a map for your bike I would suggest doing a net search to see what others have used that works for your setup. You can also get up on the forums and ask owners of the same bike with your modifications if they could give you a copy OR sell you a copy of there map which you can then upload to your PC3. Since it is working on theres it should give you a baseline to work from. If the issue is that you have a map and cant upload it to the PC3 try using a few different USB cables. Not all cables will communicate with the unit as you seen in the video.

If the bike has the same mods (exhaust/air filter) then yes sir.. this aside if your bike was Dyno tuned.. a Dyno tuned map is of course done on a specific engines performance and while it will work, it just won't be tuned to it's new home. Of course you can still install your pc3 anyways and just upload a zero map until you get those mods in on your new bike and then upload your old map once your ready.

Well, who's to say what's good or bad without a Dyno.. the object of the game is to get the correct air to fuel ratio at the right RPMs.. not just flood the system with a shit-ton of gas.. gas alone does not make you go fast.. it's a 3 part system.. (spark, air, fuel) You will know when your flooding the system because you and your bike will stink like unburnt fuel, and let me tell you.. that's a hangover you will never forget..

Alright I'm a new rider only been riding for 2yrs I was going to purchase a pc3 but I see some with only 2 injector plugs and some videos show the pc3 with multiple plugs I have a 2001 cbr 600 f4i which I added a k&n air filter delkevic headers and yoshimura exhaust...so again should the pc3 have more than 2 injector plugs? Please help me out it's all new to me and I'm dying to ride again?

What up Jamez, no worries we were all there at one point bro. The number of PC3 connectors is dependent on the number of injectors you have. On a bike such as my Gxxer there are 4 injectors, for 4 seperate cylinders, this is typically called a four stroke engine because there are 4 pistons moving up and down, 2 stroke engines equals 2 cylinders, 2 injectors, and two pistons...and so on. Each piston or cylinder needs fuel and this is the job of the injector. The timing and the amount of fuel to be sprayed into these cylinder is the job of the ECM, where it gets this signal from is the TPS (throttle position sensor). The ECM take the output signal from the TPS, runs it through its prgramming map and basically sends a voltage pulse signal to the injector(s) allowing it to activate and spray the required amount of gas needed to each cylinder. This pulse happens multiple times and very fast as you increase speed using the throttle. The PC3 is sort of like a middle man, sitting between the ECM, TPS, and the Injectors. It takes the pulse signal ment for the injectors coming from the ECM and runs that through its own program called a map. It then computes that signal and addes what it thinks is better for performance and shoots that singnal out to the injectors giving you better performance. I'm sure I missed something here but thats the gist of things. Does that make sence..?

@@TheChemistDIY thanks for breaking that down but my main question is I've seen a pc3 on ebay for my bike but it didnt seem to have all the injector plugs it looks like it only has 2 plugs 1 u plug the injector too and then the plug that goes in the injector plugs place so I guess my main question is can you run a pc3 with only 1 injector plugged in or do you have to buy additional plugs for each injector?

@@jamezrivers365 You dont want to look to an ebay seller for technical information of a product you want to put on your bike, they'll try and sell you anything. You want to go directly to the manufactures web site and see what should be used from your bike, which would be Dynojet. Yes even though PC3 has been discontinued they still provide the all the information and mapping. The PC3 version for your bike as i understand it uses only two plugs from the main harness and does not connect directly to the injectors like mine. Pops and bangs are created due to poorly tuned engines.. incorrect air to fuel ratios, bad timing, vacuum leaks, dirty pair system, incorrect sparkplug gaping.. why would want to make your bike run bad?.. to do what your speaking of is not possible with the power commander.. just mess up one or more of the things I mentioned and you'll have what you want.. you'll also have a dead engine in no time.

You need to download the power commander software in or to read maps. That to can be downloaded from there website..

Correct, there is no failsafe that I am aware of. Since the bikes ECM injectors single passes through the PCIII and if the PC UNIT is dead.. there would be no transferred signal to the injectors to open and close.. thus resulting in no gas to the engine.

Your going to screw your bike up.... There is not a bunch of maps floating online that you could use.... Read up on AFR's etc

@@TheChemistDIY Great job! You definitely need to get your bike to the Dyno for your AFR reading. Make a video, because you like to talk alot :). As Brock says the power will be there if the tune is good. I sent you the hp and torque numbers, but I didn't send you the AFR numbers. Let me know if you want to see them. Mods K&N, Tsukigi exhaust and no PC. But good possibility that previous owner reflashed/flashed/remapped the stock ECU. 49 state bike, imported to hot and humid Malaysia. How did the map in this video work for you? My map on the stock ECU ran on the lean scale in certain rpm, speed range and also ran in the rich range in other areas. I'm still learning myself, so humor me a bit. I will tell you that on a certain pull and a specific gear the AFR was down in the 10.2(11.5 is defined as Best rich torque wot) to another range and finished in the 12.2(Defined as Safe power at WOT) It was a mess in my opinion, that's why I bought the PCIII. But who knows, it could be the right tune for this bike. It runs amazing(minor discrepancies), but thats subjective. The AFR range of 12.5-13.2 seems to be the tq/hp numbers. Lian Khup , ive never bought one new but im going to say no for the simple fact the even though you bought the Pc3 for your year there are different variations or applications that it may fit. Take the k4 and K5 600 and 750 GSXR . All have the same parts that are interchangeable but the 600 engine would not require the same amount of fuel. So while it may work out the box if it does come with a map preloaded it may not be for your specific year, make and model. I had a female friend purchase a PC5 from the dealership and she had to have it mapped even though she bought it specifically for her bike (FZ09)

อมรเชษฐ รัตนอินทนิล the only way to get true to life performance increases is with a dyno. Anything other then that is basically a crap shoot. It's either that or get one from someone who had their bike dynoed with the mods or setup your currently running and compare the two to see where the addition of fuel gave them the increased performance over the one you downloaded from dynojet.

I have the Power Commander 3 installed on my bike and I can't find any maps on the website for a 2005 GSXR 600.. They have maps for other Suzuki's, just not the GSXR 600... does anyone know where I can find one? Or can the Power Commander V maps work on a 3?

** 2020 UPDATE ** For those of you looking to download a map for your motorcycle DynoJet has updated their website and you must NOW register in order to see the any maps. Once you have registered with the site , log in and go to www.dynojet.com/tunes and put in your bikes information in the 5 boxes located just under the picture titled "Tunes" and click go. Your bikes maps should populate and under the downloads column you should see the maps for you modifications. If you see login in this section then you are not logged in and must do so . For my 600 folks looking for a map you will find it under "Power Commander" dropdown AND NOT "Power Commander III USB". The pages are limited to only 10 maps per view and there is a total of 3 pages, so if you don't see your map on the first page be sure to go through all 3 pages .

I looked on the site and you're correct, no maps for your bike. I only found maps for a 2005 Suzuki GSKR 1000. Idk if those still work for your setup but it may not hurt to look at the data. Todd

If at all, I would say try surfing the forums and look for topics with those have tuned the bikes via a Dyno and offer to buy a copy of their map. If all else fails then take your bike to get tuned and then sell your map for to those looking for something close. Doing that will pay for your tune in the long run on its own. I'm curious to to know what's the difference between power commander and power comander USB 3 maps..

What up Lance, to date I haven't seen PC software version for MaC.. but dynojet has been updating their website so they may have and I just haven't ran across. That said, if you're insisting on using a MAC you could always run Windows in a virtual box on your MAC and open the PC software that way.. or save yourself the headache and just buy a cheap windows 10 laptop off eBay for the garage. When you get Dyno Tuned, you don't really see any techs using MACs to perform these jobs, partly because Apple 🍎 is so proprietary..and let's not forget more expensive for the abuse their going to put it through.

Well just installing won't give you the performance gains as say getting it Dyno tuned. You may feel a slight increase in the throttle response when messing with the three button configuration on the panel as I did.

@@DieselZee you didnt specify the slipon exhaust brand but if its a Yosh RS5 then your map is 125-013 for your 07 CBR1000RR

The PC software will automatically convert it. In the file tab, click “import” and then select the .map file you wish to use. It will automatically convert to a .djm file.

Anthony, I can no longer find my bike as well when selecting PCIII Usb option first HOWEVER if you select POWER COMMANDER" in the first dropdown and input your bikes information it will have our bikes listed. I have sent an email to Dj inquiring and waiting on a reply. Here's my email: "PCIII USB map is no longer available when inputting my bikes year, make and model in the drop down menus of your site. Information for my bikes map can only be found if selecting the "Power Commander" dropdown option first and inputting my bikes information. Are the Power Command and Power Commander USB III the same map or is this a website error that no one has taken notice to... Thanks - James (2005 Suzuki GSXR 750)"

james moreno yup i just sent it. Also i just figured out how to copy and paste a map from the pc5 to pc3. I kept wondering why the numbers weren’t matching up wen i copied and pasted an I realized the pc5 has 15% throttle adjustment when the pc3 doesn’t it goes 10% to 20%. Then i used a 2008 zx10r map that they had for the pc3 because my rev limiter stops at 13,250 i was going to use the busa map it stopped at 12,000 and it wont let you add another column to add the rpms and fuel adjustment.

@@anthonyh3261 ya heard that MAPs for the 3 and 5 are incompatible as well. I've never had the luxury of being able to test/see the difference in the two so I can't really speak on it. To bad you didn't have a screenshot of you're map.. you could just input the values manually and create you're own map without having to download it.

@@TheChemistDIY I used the same map. Tested for a week and it was very smooth. Fuel consumption was to high. I zeroed out the same map using PCIII to PC . My stock ECU map was already dynoed, so I knew I was on the rich side already. PCIII made it even richer. Looks like custom map is required to improve even more.

Stewart Mackay, sorry about that brother. At the time of this recording I was overcoming a cold, and my voice was real low and rasp. I get mixed reviews about background audio, sone have asked for and sone don't like period. When uploading to RU-vid the site adds it's own spin on audio amplification so it's hard to tell what's going to be low or loud.. I'll be sure to lower it on my next video and you let me know how it is..
