Psychologist Jack Saul and couples therapist Esther Perel have partnered numerous times to tackle problems that were too big to handle within the four corners of their offices. Over the years they have come together to work with refugees and their post-9/11 Lower Manhattan community to produce theater that engages the public as a creative collaborator. Jack, who has worked for over 30 years on collective trauma, will speak about his new public arts project debuting this week at UNFINISHED - “Moral Injuries of War.”
Esther, the iconic therapist, has been breaking new ground on the massive shifts in today’s relationships, both in love and work. Taking the pulse of our cultural transition through the lens of sexuality, she will speak about her podcasts “Where Should We Begin?” And “How’s Work?” Too often our personal dramas are shrouded in secrecy, shame and guilt. Both projects take the hidden into the public square. In “Moral Injuries of War,” we are asked to take responsibility for the forces that lead to private suffering; in Esther’s podcasts, we are invited to listen deeply to others and see ourselves in the mirror.

Differing approaches to treatment of PTSD originates from one's personal victory over PTSD. Overcoming PTSD is an enormous process using varying methods. A Win is a Win, regardless of the treatment utilized.

Ah makes sense she has stage presence when she speaks - she was an actress first. Working improv with peoples stories. Theatre play out of their stories. Yes this is how it can reach so many people. Social media can extend this reach but there's nothing like face ti face.

Practises in the military is about dehumanising, numbing out, moral injury - deep apathy towards humanity. To heal from this severe dissociation and compartmentalisation... ptsd...

The reason there could be someone in Sydney Australia doing same rituals as the Holocaust survivors Esther grew amidst did, is More about the Jewish past and heritage , than anything else. In my humble opinion.

Those carriers of Family pain are often the Family Scapegoats. Lots of Unconscious gets dumped on these individuals. Edit: Unconsciousness.

The Germans have a word for those who feel happy knowing someone is having pain or sadness in their lives; it is called "Schadenfreude."

Oh, but this is a trait of human nature which is poorly concealed these days through culture; it is poorly managed with proliferation of violent video games and seemingly uncontrolled social media when everyone is allowed to perpetrate abuse whilst wearing the mask of anonymity. It was more obvious in the not so distant past- watch some of the mute film comedies.

Using Drones is an easy replication of violent Video Games...no shame, no guilt!

As long as the ones who have perpetrated social traumas are unpunished, to sell the victims (in which I include the survivors and their relatives not directly involved in trauma) trauma therapy is nothing more than an attempt at deceit and manipulation. First, justice, then healing. Besides, if justice is not administered, the past trauma and/or other traumas WILL (re) occur. So, what is this?! Merciful therapy for the perpetual victims who are and will continue to be traumatised? There will be no healing without PROPER justice. No healing.

Do you want to treat the veterans’ moral injury? Take social and political action to end and prevent wars. No atrocities are ‘unavoidable’. Are you trying to manipulate your audience? It’s disgusting. And there’s another aspect to the individual soldier’s trauma. Each single individual soldier IS guilty, so they deserve their trauma. Yes, they should get support, but after they realise they have been guilty. Guilty as hell, deserving of the psychological hell.
