Enjoyed the discussion. I like "creator" over " influencer" You have to create something of value for people to follow you. Both of you guys do a great job with your channels.

Several years ago, there seemed to be a ton of creators ( Sage , Ginger Runner , Billy Yang, others who's name escapes me at the moment ) who were putting out running films of their races and that is what got me interested in running and I was able to learn a lot from them . Now , there seems to be a vacuum in that area . I am not even sure anyone is putting out race videos of themselves running races like they used to . ( Sally McRae has done content of her 200 mile races recently )

I have to agree with Sage about calling people out vs Sandi's perspective of calling people "up." Behavior change has to happen with the person who violated others, and the call for accountability comes from the person violated by the behavior. When someone is "called up," the person calling up is "helping" the other person change. However, this is a way of internalizing the violation, placing some of the accountability and responsibility on the person calling up. Sandi's intent to request the person to "do better" is coming from the transformative perspective, however, a more effective way for this is to have a private conversation vs putting it on social media. Interpersonal skills, not matter how well one uses them, does not always translate on social media. For those with formidable social media presence, it's important to assert your own position, no need to "call out" the specific person or violation, however to use this space to provide your own perspective. Taking a stand is important, and social media is the platform to do this. Following up with someone to repair a relationship should happen off social media, best done in person. Also, social media following depends on algorithm, which is why people w social media teams who can keep up w posting have bigger followings. Not necessarily about achievement or talent. Social media, after all, is now a job and income source.

By the way, look for my friend Donnie Cowart at the marathon trials. Ran 2:13 to qualify, he is an inspiring story of a great person having to grind it out to keep his dream of running alive.

Great, well-rounded conversation with various perspectives. But overall love the message of just knowing your values and who you are :)

truth be told it was actually a non-alcoholic beer (it was a little before 5pm still!). I meant to start the pod with my drink already there on the table but had forgotten it....so the first opportunity I had (When Sandi started to talk) i got up to get it in the kitchen! 🤣

I think that sponsored athletes are influencers whether or not they're on social media or not. The reason why they're sponsored for being a top level athlete is the same reason influencers are paid. It's because they generate more revenue for the company sponsoring them. Edward Berneys wrote about how those in power form the thoughts of the masses by getting local, respected leaders to promote a vision of the world that conformed to their needs. To me the struggle between social media figure and pro-athlete misses a lot of discussion of what is the effect of advertising on thought and consumerism. I also think this along with the rise of open trans people competing in sport offers us an opportunity to really think about what we want the purpose of sport to be, versus what it is. It is my position that we want to encourage broad participation in sports to build community and improve the health of individuals. A model that is built around promoting the top 1% or 1% of 1% is not one we should want. This is maybe less of a problem in running compared to other sports because it's already a sport more people participate in than watch. I would personally really like to see more events put on by local governments, not just in running, but things like municipally organized adult rec leagues for a variety of sports that remove the element of consumerism as much as possible. Apologies for the very long comment, but I've been thinking about this stuff a lot lately.

I agree. The line between a sponsored athlete and an influencer seems to be more and more blurred these days. Online they are one of the same as well as how brands might utilize them (marketing). But the budgets might be different as well as the niche marketing angles. The only really difference would be speed (times and PRs) as well as podiums/wins creating a following and attention....but as I mentioned that can be less relatable to most runners (especially a "pro runner lifestyle").

Question for Sandi: you mentioned that you are training more on roads but your next race is on trails. I am just tapping onto trail running and I want to run my first trail half coming up in 2 months. However, the trails here are muddy and/ snow covered and I do not want to run on muddy/ snow trails because it can erode it faster (advised by the national park rangers).. Can I train on roads and still do well on trails? Thanks for the advice and Love all your talks!

It's a really good idea to keep making videos on occasion. Anyway, it's a good idea for me.

This is (whenever World Athletics and USATF revise their dumb uniform standards) headed towards a world where we have runners wearing singlets/tops that have a bunch of corporate logos on them. Like say Tracksmith, Hoka, UCan, Nun and Coros; or Rabbit, New Balance, Gu, and Garmin; or Oiselle, Saucony, Gatorade and Wahoo. And maybe a running club logo of the club sponsored by the local running store. I've seen some of this at the club level, and triathlon is definitely already there. You put five $10k a year sponsorships together plus online coaching and you have a good living.

Walmsley has no social media presence. And there are tons of professional ultra and track runners who don’t. So no, they are not going to sell more shoes than an average influencer. And therefore get more brand attention.

that's not true....he does have a personal Instagram account? And Strava? How frequently he actually posts and how much content he creates might be another story (HOKA has done some great videos/films with him and he's had a lot of press obviously from winning WS100 over the years and recently UTMB). But yeah, I think personally his personality isn't to post a lot online (or create his own content)

I gotta say I think I can still hold my own in a donut 5k (or beer mile) still. I don't think there is a Dunkin Donuts even close to Salida Colorado though!
