Hi everyone! I had a glitch, so I had to pull down the video quickly and repost, sorry about that mistake! In this video we cover a common behavioral interview question - Tell me about a time a large program you were managing got behind schedule and the step(s) you took to get things back on track? This is a common question for a Program Manager, but this question will show up for quite a few roles. I hope it helps!

Hi Jeff, I have been watching you for a couple of years. Last week I finished a two-month interview process for a director job at a major video game company. Thanks to your guidance and frameworks (which I adopted to the gaming world), I got the job. I tell everyone I know who is looking for work (and there are a lot of them in the video gaming world lately) to watch your channel and learn from the master. You are making a big difference in people’s lives. Thank you.

@playblox7508, AMAZING, CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!! I sincerely appreciate you spreading the word, it really helps my channel! Also, I am confident that my tips don't just apply to tech, they really apply to any industry and you are my evidence to support it!! 😬

This is what Program Managers do in real time. Often in my experience with Google, Salesforce and Cisco the processes are so fluid they blend with each other.

@mollesmart, absolutely! Program Managers are constantly handling so many different items all the time. And sometimes programs get off schedule due to items that are simply outside of the Program Manager's control. I hope you liked this example!

You've been providing excellent examples since the video "Tell me about a time you influenced a product roadmap," and I've found them incredibly informative. Please continue sharing more examples; this is exceptionally valuable. Thank you!!

This was super helpful. I am looking forward for more practice questions related to program/project management. 😊

@luckysharma6039, use ChatGPT, you can do something generic, like asking GPT to create 25 practice hypothetical and 25 practice behavioral job interview questions. Or, you can paste a job description in, and ask for questions based on that specific JD.

I've been managing projects for some years now. If I would interview a candidate and this was his response, I would think that he invented this story and memorised it. - you went in way too many details, most of them being unrelated to the question and seem like you just wanna brag - you mentioned some processes and tools that NEDEED to be in place already by the time of delay - a lot of extra fluff for post root cause analysis Maybe it's me, maybe I am a pragmatic guy, take my feedback with a grain of salt

@AndreiCatalinOG, thanks for the feedback. The details I provided were to highlight the initial data discovery and conversations, the testing and execution phases, and ultimately, the launch, presentation, and documentation of those items. My ideal behavioral answer is 3-4 minutes. Typically, the examples I use in a video are closer to four minutes because I want to provide as much detail as possible for the viewer to consider. The answer should sound memorized as it is scripted for video and would likely not be as fluid in an interview. It is absolutely an example that I made up, as I have never been a Program Manager in my career. The challenge with short answers in my opinion is that they don't tell me what the candidate did and how they did it. It also a control item, we simply need to take control and share what we did, because we cannot guarantee that our interviewer will be an active participant and dig deeper into our answers.

@@jeffhsipepi Ok I see your point. It's probably also a culture issue as I am from Europe and I observed when working with US that people tend to give more details, some of them which in my mind go without saying (emphasis on "in my mind"). Do you have any experience in hiring in Europe? Do you think that the same lengthy responses apply? It makes sense in my head to have "zero question" answers, and catch as many follow ups in the response, but the worry is that I am not concise and direct Thanks for taking the time to respond.

@@AndreiCatalinOG I do not see it as a cultural issue (personally), "the how" remains the most critical factor when interviewers look to hire people and in my opinion, 3-4 minute answers simply do not qualify as lengthy. You can provide a lot of detail and still be concise. I hope this feedback helps, but I coach my European clients the same way I coach my US based clients. Thanks for commenting!
