So awesome that you have taken this on! I’m new to gardening too and I garden in NJ, however my parents live in PR and one day I’d like to go “back to the island” as you have. I follow Puerto Rico gardeners on YT - and it is very different than gardening in the states! I don’t know if the wood you used is termite proof but in PR the comejen will attack wood. Rubber, metal or plastic may be a good choice (in the future). The soil you used probably needs to be amended. Understanding soil is the basis of gardening success. You probably want to use some sort of mulch on the plants to prevent weeds. You may need to plant the mint separately, it will take over quickly. I would plant peppers- they do great in PR. Tomatoes too! Check out plants for planting zone 13. Companion planting is instrumental in keeping bugs and disease at bay. Lots of info online for specific plants you can plant together and those you shouldn’t. I started growing edibles for the first time this year too. Gardening is so much fun. The kids will love it!
