I’m just finding your channel great content! I think it is a great idea for every young architect to work at a small scrappy residential firm. I’ve been at one for a year and learned exponentially more than I did in a longer amount of time at a larger firm. I’ve submitted over 50 projects for permit and now finally feel I have a sense of the profession

To elaborate on the building code and a few points, Dami is correct... However! There are occasions where an architect (or other design officials) will not fight the city as they know the battle could be lengthy and fruitless, in my case I fought the city for two years (I won eventually) but time spent vs sacrifices made, makes it questionable if it was worth it. Also not all ACP (Acoustic ceiling panels) are expensive you can get the acoustic insulation cheaply, the fancy tiles are expensive. You can meet your minimums and still use tiles but maybe not the ones the artsy Corbusier wannabe designer likes. A small elaboration so all of the non architectural people don't think that all ACPs are bad and expensive.

I have a question that I can't get answers to it, I'm an architecture visualization freelancer and I've always wanted to know how professional firms or other freelancers in Canada/USA put their prices, I got confused so many times, sometimes I feel I'm underpricing my jobs and not getting paid what I should be getting paid and sometimes it's the opposite which is super confusing. How would you calculate the prices fairly ? Does it work by picture/render ? what if you use an engine (unreal/lumion/enscape...etc) does it change ? If anyone has ideas/knowledge please reply to this comment, Thank you 😇
@DamiLeeArch
@DamiLeeArch 2 года назад
it really depends on your skill, quality of drawings, and service. hard to give you a price, I've seen range from $150- $1500 per rendering

13:22 You get paid overtime!? And even time and a half!? That's a sign of architecture firms who has it together. (or maybe government mandate) I have not heard of architectural firms, at least not in my circle in the states, get paid for overtime. I've been in offices where we have to work overtime on short notice, sometimes on the weekends, in offices where overtime is so normal that office hours basically goes from 10-11AM to 10-11PM. smh... Great video! I can relate to much of that!

Hi Dami, I am studying in uk and I am a second year architecture student. I just wanted to say I really like your videos and I am soo happy that u gonna do more videos. I am also working part time every day 3 hr and while I am working I am listening to you. I would like to have also a question. What is the fastest way to get a job after graduation? I mean outside of university I am doing nothing what is related to architecture..Do you think this could have an impact on me when I will apply for my first job? I am a little bit stressed about this. Thanks Anett
@darkryst8073
@darkryst8073 2 года назад
By experience, what I can tell you is that the day you will join a firm you'll understand that university is the university and a job is a job. what you study in architecture universities is more of the fun part, doing an exercise with a problem and finding solutions, in general designing. In a firm that's not just that and when you'll start you gonna probably do the boring part. also 70% of the time you're gonna learn new things about how the firm works and how actual architecture is outside of school. Don't be stressed we all crossed that somehow first 15 days it's tough than you get used to everything and you'll manage to adapt and learn. Good luck o/
@DamiLeeArch
@DamiLeeArch 2 года назад
Start preparing your portfolio now so that when it's time for you to start applying, you're ready. If you don't know already, learn programs like Revit, Archicad or Vectorworks (check out job boards in your city and see what the most programs are) and try to do a project in one of the softwares and include that in your portfolio. Apply in april of the year you plan to start working, so you can be a little ahead of other people. Good luck :)

Yep, that's what Jordan B. Peterson says, women have only so much time to do certain things if they want to experience motherhood and all that goes with it. There is only so much time available in life and having kids early isn't the only one, it is also more wise to get an education early too, it is better to start saving money/investing early, but these other things aren't as gender specific as motherhood. Good luck in your life journey. I learned how to speak Korean near fluently while doing an internship there about 10 years ago.

I don't think you're tied to the country you went to school in, but once you get your license, you will be more tied to the place where you got licensed (because license procedure is based on local code / building standards)

building code is free and accessible online to anyone, but understanding / deciphering it is almost impossible for someone without some education in code. My dream is for someone to develop an app that can give everyone easy access to this.
@LocoEvents
@LocoEvents 2 года назад
Okay, interesting. I do understand that it's not possible to understand everything. But for an example building a house is easy to understand. But getting a permit, you still need an engineer to calculate a lot of things that a citizen cant. But the citizen do know what is needed for the permitt. We do have strict rules here and easy to read the codes and understand. I would love to talk more. This is an interrestung topic.

@@DamiLeeArch I remember a kid at my college who was in some kind of architect discipline and he was telling me actual drawing with paper and pencil is no more. Still, if I was in that field I'd want to perfect my drawing skills, I mean if you see creativity as instrumental to the field then you'd have to encourage it by things like that. And anyway, anyone whose read the Fountain Head and is in the architect world without ever knowing a drawing room is gonna feel very inadequate.

I wonder why mandates to place women in organisations aren't worded more generally. Like when you say that a minumum of 50% must be women, you can have 100% women and still be considered fair because it met the criteria of a 50% minimum. They should word it like "the council shall be made up of an equal number of men and women" - so you automatically cover all angles without advantaging or disadvantaging either group.
