I almost cried thinking that in the midst of that great war, Queen mother never left her people. I would be courageous and honored to fight for the country that time! and heck! I'm not even british!
The Queen Mother was very brave during the Second World War. I can quote her even today when it suggested that then Princesses Elizabeth & Margaret be sent to the safety of Canada. “The Princesses won’t leave without me, I won’t leave without the King, the King won’t leave.”
In 1952 The Quuen Mother had built a small seperate chapel, for her and her husband, off of the main St Georges Chapel. The ashes of Princess Margaret are there too. The other Royal burial ground is Frogmore(about 2 miles from Windsor)this has many graves of minor royals, and has the graves of the Duke & Duchess of Windsor(Edward VII) It also has the mausoleum of Prince Albert& Queen Victoria. The Queen Mother's funeral was exactly 50 years to the day after George VI's.
The "square"(as you call it) is actually the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior from World War 1. As a memorial to the troops that died,an anonymous dead soldier was plucked from the battlefield and buried(with much ceremony) there. It was meant to say to all those that had lost their sons etc this might be your family member buried here. When the Queen Mother left the Abbey after getting married she laid her wedding bouquet on the tomb.
A lady who was a excellent consort for her husband the king..they took on that mantle like they were made for it...actually he was probably the one who should have being the eldest anyway.
She stood against tyranny, and for that is a hero! I love Her Majesty and am sad that we no longer have here amongst us. Her example of wartime bravery is something that we can all learn from. May The Queen Mother rest in peace. Thank you, Ma'am for your most excellent example of bravery in the face of great danger.
Even though they became the British Royal Family, the Hanoverians continued to marry royalty of German origin, including Victoria, who married her cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Regardless, every British monarch since George III has been born in the UK and has spoken English as their first language. George V broke away from the German past in 1917 by relinquishing his family's German titles, renaming them "Windsor", and allowing his children to marry British men and women.
But it was a big deal, the Royal family had never refused sanctuary before, they were committing themselves to fate, to add morale to their country. King George was a massive symbol of morale throughout the War. The fact that he and his family stayed behind in the most heavily bombed city in the world showed huge guts! Buckingham Palace was bombed twice during wartime, almost killing the King and Queen. I agree that she was remarkable, especially for the age in which her husband was King.
LISTEN TO THE PHANTASTIC ORGAN - the pedal registration during the hymn includes the 32" Open Double Wood -incredible sound and depth.....you can find this stop also at Selby Abbey organ..
The Queen Mother is buried in small seperate chapel off of the St Georges chapel. This was built after King George VI died in 1952,they both lie there. In the wall of this chapel lie the ashes of Princess Margaret. The other burial; ground (about 2 miles from Windsor Castle) is called Frogmore. It was first used for the burial of Prince Albert and then(much)later Queen Victoria. In the grounds are the graves of many minor Royals.King Edward VIII(Duke of Windsor) is there along with his Duchess
Loosing ones mother is never a nice thing especially if you’ve been with her your entire life .In manny ways the queen mother is one of the luckiest parents in the world she was able to see her children and her grandchildren grow into adult hood and become a great grand mother as well some of us are lucky enough to have only known one grandparent in our lives. We shall never see her like again.
@quidwitch That situation reminds me of my grandmother. Her mother died in her 98th year in April 2005, while her sister was dying of lung cancer. Her sister died in November 2005. It was one hell of a 75th birthday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas that year. She deteriorated considerable after that, though she is still alive today, she aged considerably from that point on. She was close to both of them.
I don't believe she hated Diana but rather couldn't understand her frustration. Queen Elizabeth out of duty dealt with it whereas Diana did not. I don't think she could understand why Diana couldn't deal with things since there was a duty to the people of the United Kingdom.
The Queen Mother is buried alongside her late husband (George VI) in St. Georges Chapel at Windsor Castle. There's another Royal burial ground somewhere nearby I think.
Elizabeth also has ancestry going back to the Tudors, The family only had a German name due to Queen Victoria marrying Prince Albert. All the European royals are related anyway, by birth or marriage. They are as british as it gets
No, MrSwifts31, George VI's funeral took place on 15th Febraury 1952. That of his wife, the Queen Mother, was on 9th April 2002, not quite 50 years to the day.
@kdrench You are silly! Queen Elizabeth has lived her ENTIRE life for HER Country and for her Children!!! People today do NOT understand the precepts by which she has lived her life, and I doubt they ever will. QE11 never had time to be a silly teen. She is a woman we should all hope to live by and emulate!! Happy Birthday QE11
Philip served in the Royal Navy, became a naturalized British citizen, renounced his Greek and Danish titles, and adopted the surname of his mother's family, Mountbatten by the time he married Elizabeth. They're 3rd cousins descending from Victoria, so they have some German stock, but consider themselves to be British. Such stock will be further diluted as members of the family continue to marry British people since the rationale for marrying foreign (preferably German) royals is now nonexistent
Queen Beatrix is a very gracious lady. Many years ago she came to the UK for the funeral of the (murdered) Lord Mountbatten. We saw her(with her lady in waiting) near Harrods, and she smiled and nodded at us(very nice) She obviously has taste as she was going into Harrods!LOL
When they are playing the bugles i noticed they moved them around sort of in a circle,is there a reason for that? Please understand i mean no offense! But i have seen a bugle played several times but never seen them moved does it alter the sound? just curious. Also what is the name of the song they are playing?
The Last Post.... not many Americans know the significance of that bugle call, lost as it is with the American preference for "Taps".. And it goes to point out that Her Majesty saw not one but two World Wars.
This relaxing of the marriage customs allowed for the union of the future George VI and Queen Mother to take place. This means that Elizabeth II is half Scottish on her mother's side and half English/German on her father's side. As for Philip, he was taken in by his mother's family in the UK after the Greek monarchy fell, and attended school there before spending two terms at a German school whose Jewish headmaster fled to Scotland and founded Gordonstoun, where Philip finished his education.
First, it's called the British monarchy because it reigns over Britain. The German influence began with the accession in 1714 of George I, a German prince who was the nearest Protestant relation to Queen Anne (as a great-grandson of James VI and I). He started the succession of the Hanoverians, who reigned until 1901 with the death of Queen Victoria. Her son succeeded her as a member of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. His son then changed it to Windsor due to ant-German sentiment during WWI.
I thought the majority of English are decendants of germanic tribes. The Welsh, Cornish and Scottish are whats left of the indigenous....or those that were here before. Maybe the english are the integrated result of roman celts and germans? I dont know.
Please accept my apologies for the comments made by thebellotilla. I'm American and can assure you, a huge majority of Americans loved this woman very much. The U.K. always has a special place for us. I note that this thebellotilla person posts mostly in Spanish. If that person is indeed an American citizen, he or she has not absorbed American traditions. Then again, it is possible that Latin Americans in general dislike the British because of the humiliating defeat of the Argentines.
May she RIP, Eternally❕❕❕She was truly a ♥️ *Divine, Blessed Queen's Mother,* 🥀 indeed❗️❗️❗️ She lived the 🍓Berrrrrrry🍇 Best possible life upon the earth, never wanting for anything; a King Husband, whom Cherished Her; a Queen daughter, whom is one of a kind, Ruler Of The World; future Kings/Queens Offsprings❕❕❕👑👑👑👑👑👑👑
The regalia belongs to HRH, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Those are Bishops, NOT Cardinals as this is the Church of England. I found your commentary VERY insensitive.
@Aikidolover29 Not at all...they get several names and choose one of them. Charles Philip Arthur George is going to be George (the last Charles they had was a menace).
This is what we call the funeral of the highest order and Royalty....We bless God who hath given unto man to design and organize a ceremony like this... May she rule over us for a very long time.... God Save the Queen!
@floridatom1964 The Queen doesnt sing on God Save the Queen for the same reason one isnt supposed to drink when one is being toasted....because you dont join in the singing of ones own praises.
@Monarchos people always have other people that rule over them whether its a republic with politictians or a monarchy. We in the USA cant even direcly elect our own president!
@mbukukanyau Go back earlier: it's time for both Rome and Canterbury (and the rest of us too!) to rejoin true Biblical Christianity as laid down by our Lord Jesus Christ and recorded in the Holy Scriptures. Soli Deo Gloria.
