Brownells Firearm Support Technician Caleb Savant briefly returns to the old days of the Cold War to talk about two competing military rifle cartridges: NATO's 5.56x45mm, the standard M16 / AR-15 round, and the Warsaw Pact's answer to it, the 5.45x39mm, originally introduced in 1974 in the AK-74 rifle. The Soviet 5.45x39 has a 60 grain bullet that exits the barrel going about 2,800 fps. The standard 5.56 NATO XM855 round has a 62 grain bullet that moves at approximately 3,150 fps - so a tiny bit more bullet mass and a lot more velocity. With a 100 yard zero, you'll see a drop of about 14" from the 5.45x39 at 300 yards, while the 5.56 will drop about 9" (the benefits of that extra velocity!). The 5.45x39's long bullet tends to tumble when it penetrates soft tissue, leading to substantial wound damage; the 5.56x45 tends to penetrate through and through. So which cartridge is better? Caleb's leaving that up to you. Tell us which round YOU prefer in the comments below.

5.56 has 1.5g more case capacity. 5.45 generally has higher BC due to bullet shape/ length. 5.45 has a shorter wider case, which to my understanding gives a more efficient powder burn based on my understanding of the Winchester Short Magnum, series of cartridges. Shorter wider case, same performance, less powder. If I had to guess I would say the 5.45 has the edge, given quality components in the same weapon platform.
@classifiedad1
@classifiedad1 4 года назад
Wouldn't be too surprised, given that 5.45 was developed based on the performance of .223, and could thus draw lessons from the .223 where the 5.56 is more or less an adaptation of .223.
@daltanionwaves
@daltanionwaves 4 года назад
That's a negligible difference in these two cases. Additionally a significant (how significant can be debated) part of the advantage of shorter cases is in the mechanics of a short action. Like a 30-06 or 270 vs the 270WSM. That's not part of the equation here. In terms of ballistics, these are two different solutions to the same problem (killing humans). In other words, it's kind of comparing apples to pears. Or... more like oranges and grapefruits... In terms of shooting flat small groups out past 300 yards, the 223 has the edge. But for destroying biological tissue under 500 yards, a tumbling bullet has a huge advantage. The 5.45 is comparable in weight, so it's a modest advantage. The 223 (later 556x45) was designed under a requirement to penetrate the light steel plate of helmets, and to match the accuracy of the 30-06, while being ultra lightweight.. As the adoption of body armor became more widespread in the world in the 80s, the poor penetrating power of the 5.45 started becoming a problem. There was talk within Russia of going back to the 7.62 of the AK47, which is a comparative destroyer. But instead they ended up iterating different penetrating variants throughout the 90s/2000s.... So saying one has the edge over the other, is an oversimplification or misunderstanding of the rounds' ballistics and history.

What does "standard barrel" mean? the 5.56's 3150 fps is the velocity of a 20" M16 barrel. But nowadays standard length is pretty much 14.5" which equates to about 2870ish fps.

Tumbling is a function of stability, which in turn is a function of rotational speed/barrel twist rate. For a given bullet length, faster twists increase, within limits, stability. For a given twist rate, longer bullets lose stability. Early M16s had slow twist rates, which promoted tumbling and lethality in terminal ballistics of the original design round. The Twist rate was increased, stabilizing those bullets, to support heavier bullets with greater long range stability and external ballistics (drift) at the cost of lethality. I believe another way of saying what you are saying is that the AK-74 is engineered with a slow twist rate to promote instability in terminal ballistics when firing 5.45x39mm ammunition.
@justsomeguy3931
@justsomeguy3931 4 года назад
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5.45%C3%9739mm Tests indicate the free recoil energy delivered by the 5.45×39mm AK-74 assault rifle is 3.39 J (2.50 ft⋅lb), compared to 6.44 J (4.75 ft⋅lb) delivered by the 5.56×45mm NATO in the M16 assault rifle and 7.19 J (5.30 ft⋅lb) delivered by the 7.62×39mm in the AKM assault rifle. I prefer the AK platform over the AR, and I think the 74 has a better round than the AR (without considering 7.62x51mm or .308). The 5.45 generates a LOT less recoil. There is a much bigger gap between 5.45 and 5.56, than between 5.56 and 7.62x39. And AR guys LOOOVE to give the AK a hard time about the recoil, comrades! Under ideal conditions, 5.56 and 5.45 have very comparable in wounding ability. However, by relying on tumbling instead of fragmentation, the 5.45 does not depend so much on velocity. That helps with SBRs such as the AKS74u. While 5.56 suffers in 8 or 10 inch barrels, the 5.45 was designed for them. If 5.56 isn't going fast enough to reach fragmentation threshold, and the weight of the bullet isn't matched to the twist rate, you don't get the magic Terminal Ballistics out of it. That means at long range even out of standard length barrels, I'd give the 5.45 the edge in wound causing. Poison bullet, remember? What's the 5.56's hisorical reputation for stopping power? Adequate, but finnicky IMOH. 5.56 also can't marry armor-piercing and anti-personell properties. The 7N6 is VERY good as a flesh eating bullet, while also having a steel core to help with armor and barrier penetration. True, 7N6 won't go through as much concrete and steel as M855 green tip, but there's not many types of NIJ level 3 armor that one will go through but the other won't. And the 7N6 won't perform like a depleted FMJ when it gets there, even at low velocities, it tumbles in soft tissue In short, they do roughly equal damage under the best of conditions, but the 5.56 is inconsistent under less than ideal conditions, while the 5.45 is very consistent under various conditions. And doesn't require the Internal Ballistics balancing act of the correct weight bullets to the correct twist rates. Take the 7N6 for armored up people and barriers, and the Hornady hollow-points for the unarmored people, and use the FMJ for practice, comrades! Very simple. I don't need to watch videos and debate my barrel length and weight profile and decide on a round weight and play with doping scopes all day. AKs have 8 or 16 inch or 23 inch barrels, done. Rifle Dynamics makes a sweet 10 inch barrel AKS74u, just to give a touch more velocity back for longer range work (and it helps with hollow points, which weren't exactly all the rage in the mid 70s) Just another reason I went Kalashnikov - and never looked back: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Oq3ZEZ7YFw.html

Personally still prefer the original 5.56x45mm USGI M193 FMJ. Impacts targets & reacts similar to the Warsaw Pact 5.45mm while retaining adequate hard target penetration generally exceeding that of the 5.45x39. Accuracy is outstanding with either cartridge allowing for much better than combat accurate shot placement. Arguably, the 5.56x45 NATO 62g penetrator or USGI SS109 cartridge does in my personal evaluation, along with a documented history does excel slightly in penetrating barriers. History has proven all the above mentioned cartridges effective.

The 5.56 (or .223) weren't designed to do this but in soft tissue they usually fragment when impacting above a certain speed (depending on bullet construction that threshold is usually above 2500 fps). This dramatically increases wounding capacity, often doing more damage than a tumbling bullet that didn't fragment. It is also my understanding that bullet impacts above 2200 fps (that number may be wrong) produce far more tearing of flesh than slower impacts resulting in far more internal bleeding than otherwise.

Time was, BITD, that the 55gr 5.56 projectile tumbled and made a mess in the human body. Some called it a violation of Geneva or Hague Conventions.. Now they just punch thru and thru??? WTF?-over.... The new(er) 62 gr was designed to pierce light armor so t'n't is to be expected. I have used and seen the results of 55gr S.P. on flesh- they pretty much expand violently and cause a lot of damage. I'd like to see a S.P. 62gr on the market, might even use it for white-tails.

3100 from that 62 grain? Yeah i guess 20-24” barrels is what the military uses now . The m4 with 14-16” barrel will push these to 2800 fps The reg 55 fmj from going 3200 will go through ar500 plate all day. These 62 will disintegrate. Out of these two the ak74 round performs better at what is was designed to do

The m855 was designed in the 80s, with a 20" barrel. I agree with your point though...I think they need to start giving 16" ballistics on the box as well, but we all know that 98% of shooters don't even think about how barrel length affects velocity and wounding. If the .22 caliber hole doesn't get them, the 8 foot fireball coming out the end of that 9" barrel will.

They tumbled do to the twist rate of the barrel. The 55 grain and even 62 grain can destabilize and tumble and show a keyhole effect on targets if being shot out of a 1 in 12" or 1 in 14" twist barrel. Not allways, but most of the time. This is a primary reason many barrels are a 1 in 7" twist now so they can handel longer heavy projectiles.

The 5.45 looks like it could perform substantially better in a modern case with modern powders and a modern, high-BC cfd designed bullet. The longer bullet SHOULD lead itself to a much higher BC, the shorter fatter case usually indicates higher burn efficiencies - but none of that seems to manifest in the actual cartridge. Would be interesting to see a fully modernised loading for the 5.45 - certainly has way more design advantages going for it then the 5.56's shape.

5.45 loads are about 100-200 fps slower than 5.56 loads out the muzzle, all other things equal (bullet weight and barrel length). However, 5.45 cases, while it has a smaller case volume (thus lower velocity), it also allows for longer, more aerodynamic bullets to be loaded into a magazine-fed rifle. At mid-range (300 meters), the velocity and terminal performance of comparable bullet construction and weights are thus comparable, if not roughly equivalent. 5.45 also uses 5.6mm bullets (.220) whereas 5.56 uses 5.7mm (.224), so, unfortunately, reloaders can't use the same caliber of bullets. 5.45 does have a very minute advantage in sectional density if grains are equal, but I'd say the shape and boattail makes most of the difference.
@MrChuckwagon55
@MrChuckwagon55 4 года назад
Bhum Brahmavira - Yes the 5.56 has more velocity - because it has to in order to wound or kill because it’s dependent on fragmentation which only occurs at high velocity with the 5.56/.223 round. The 5.45 works in a completely different manner - it’s not velocity dependent the way the 5.56/.223 is because it doesn’t rely on fragmentation for its terminal ballistics, it works on violently tumbling and yawing from rapid destabilization when it hits a target because of a hollow air cavity in the nose of the bullet. In addition to soft tissue damage, it also penetrates extremely well because of its steel core (even though its “technically” not armor piercing - although later variants were - and have tungsten penetrator cores still with the hollow nose cavity). So a 5.45 shot out of a 10 inch AK74 pistol/short carbine can still have the lethality (maybe not the same range) as one shot out of a 16” barrel. Below is some interesting info on the round and the development of it: www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2016/01/10/5-45x39-small-but-perfect-a-history-of-development/ www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2016/08/10/modern-intermediate-calibers-008-soviet-5-45x39mm/ www.coolfx.us/ak/545x39_part_01.pdf www.coolfx.us/ak/545x39_part_02.pdf www.cruffler.com/Features/OCT-01/trivia-October01.html

@@MrChuckwagon55 Very true. Standard common mil loads (m193, m855) is velocity dependent for wounding power. That said, enhanced designs with OTM construction (to give air pocket not unlike 7n6) also yaws, while m855a1 simply split into two pieces, with the main copper slug on the back acting almost like a hollow-point. It came really late, but there's finally offerings for velocity forgiving 5.56, though the BC is still inferior to 5.45 (maybe 77 grainers meets or exceeds 5.45 BC but those aren't as common as it should be)
@MrChuckwagon55
@MrChuckwagon55 4 года назад
Bhum Brahmavira - Absolutely. I actually said what you just said in some other comments. There are a wide array of extremely effective 5.56 rounds that are as good at or even exceed even the modern 5.45 (in terms of soft target damage). There are many examples of this, such as the MK 262 MOD 1 (which is a Black Hills 77gr. Sierra match king projectile), the 70gr browntip (which I believe is a Barnes TSX full copper projectile) plus many others. The two I just mentioned only because they have been in use in US special operations for a number of years now and have had outstanding results. Other NATO countries are using them as well. Of course this is not in a vacuum, so in the US the 5.56/.223 is much more available and easier to find and purchase than the 5.45, which gives it a huge advantage in the US. In Russia the opposite would be true of course because the 5.45 is their round. Either way, both are excellent rounds which have proven themselves over a long period of time.

Case geometry matters. More cylindrical cases burn powder more progressively and more uniformly resulting in higher velocities. Highly tapered bottleneck cartridges also have slightly less consistent ignition and burn time resulting in Greater variations in velocity and therefore point of impact precision often called accuracy.

I spent 20 years on active duty (although the vast majority of my 50+ years of shooting experience is non-military), and the M855 is (imho) the least accurate of the commonly used 5.56x45mm rounds. This is probably due to its mild steel tip, which can be SLIGHTLY asymmetrical and which therefore can create aerodynamic forces that would not be encountered in lead core/copper jacketed projectiles.

On paper, nearly everything about the 5.45 is better designed for ballistics - the issue is that the cartridge has seen no modern development. The max pressure it can operate at is substantially lower than the 5.56, if the cartridge were to be manufactured using modern materials, modern powders and modern bullet design you'd have an extremely efficient cartridge shooting higher BC bullets.

I thought the 5.56x45 starts to tumble upon enteing soft tissue, then breaks apart due to the round not being able to handle the forces of tumbling. That break up of the round is supposedly very destructive. I've heard that a lot over the years from reputable sources. That said, it only does that at the rounds highest speeds, shorter barrels and slower speeds due not result in a tumble and break up. Interesting to learn about the other round there though, I didn't know anything about the 5.56X39. Thanks.

Green Tip M855 is good for training, but rather use the MK318 SOST (62gr) or MK262 OTM (77gr) in 556 round. In the AK74 the 7N6 (52gr) which is now banned from import is a nasty round. It has a hollow cavity behind the tip/nose of the projectile that when it hits it bends and creates a nasty wound channel. Only downside it’s the 7N6 is corrosive round so you need to clean your weapon to get the corrosive salts off and out of the weapon. AK74s are hard to come by anymore at a reasonable price because they aren’t being imported anymore. Your 556 as long as you have 1:7 or 1:8 twist in your barrel fire whatever you want for the range and training, but load with the MK318 or MK262 for self/home defense. If you go with the MK318 it’s Federal TB556TBN1 for the MOD 0 or lead core or TB556TBN1NL for the MOD 1 which is non lead and runs around .80 cents a round. If you go with the MK 262 MOD1 look for the Federal FC262 or IMI 77gr OTM which is also around .80 cents a shot. The Black Hills MK262 MOD1 runs like $1.10 a shot and unless you are shooting competitions you aren’t going to know the difference except in your wallet. Hornady TAP(75gr) and Speer (64gr) make some good defensive rounds also, but I don’t know the prices of them off the top of my head. I’m just more familiar with the MK318 firing that from my issued M4 and then the MK262 when I was issued MK12 DMR rifle when I was active duty. I now use both in my personal rifles I’ve set up as clones of what I was issued for my self/home defense rounds and use the M855 and M193 rounds for training and practice. If I’m shooting distance with my MK12 I’ll run the MK262 training and I always run at least one box of the MK318 when I get a new order to make sure it runs and cycles correctly. When Federal makes a run of these rounds and they show up on the open market buy why you can because it’s over run from whatever Government contract they are filling and will not make another run until the next Government contract for what is worth from what I was told by the guy that quality controls the orders for the Marine Corps. IMI makes constant runs on the MK 262. My 2 cents for what it’s worth.

The 556 does Punch a hole straight through when you’re talking about the 62 grain green tip in front of you however the more widely used in warfare 55 grain was designed to tumble and it manages that quite fine in soft tissue because the back of the bullet is heavier than the front so when it hits soft tissue the back intuitively wants to go to the front . Also the projectile is slightly destabilized and flight due to yaw … The 62 grain is heavier in the front due to the penetrator core in the tip therefore it flies straighter and does not destabilize like a 55 grain does . This is assuming you're using the same system of measurement, there are various ways chamber pressure is measured. The fact that the profiles of the cartridge are so visibly different that compatibility seems ludicrous.

I know the 62g green tip sucks, I'd take 55g xm193 over m855 any day of the week,

Very true. Green tip has proven to be very ineffective. The great thing about M193 is you can train with it and use it for self defense because it’s affordable.

Caleb, did you face the AK74 while serving? I know very few of the Taliban had 74's vs 47's.

Wolf, Brown Bear, Golden Tiger bullets, etc. still have the space behind the tip.

Well this 5.56 x 45mm isn't going to be what I want for my ar 15 for home and personal defense, I am gathering?

5.45 is better for carbines 🤷‍♂️
@harrypeterson9287

@@nipplecream3099 How is 5.45 better? 5.56 has a bit larger diameter and a higher chamber pressure. This lends itself better to shorter barrels. When loaded to full spec 5.56x45 can fire a 62 grain bullet at nearly 2900fps with an 11.5 inch barrel. 5.45x39 can only reach that velocity from a 16 inch barrel with a 53 grain bullet.

@nipplecream3099 2 года назад
@@harrypeterson9287 as far as i’m aware, 5.45 is a bit of a better performer at lower velocities, if you need a carbine, you probably don’t need an incredibly fast bullet, one that consistently tumbles is great on the other hand; but there’s a decent enough chance i’m wrong

@@nipplecream3099 Look up some M855A1 videos, it's the current US militaries standard round and it hits like a bomb even out at long ranges, it fragments quickly and reliably in tissue but also punches through hard barriers very well. There's a video of a guy shooting two hams, one with a regular green tip and the other with the new M855A1 round. The green tip left maybe a golf ball sized hole out the back. The M855A1 blew it into pieces and they were literally wiping meat off the camera lenses.

I pick 5.45×39 because this bullet is low recoil.
