First story: That guy definitely needs to grow up. Yankee has a lot of meanings in history and some people do use derogatorily. Like if you hear someone in the UK say “Bloody Yank” or “Typical Yankee” they’re just calling you a dumb American. And, frankly, we do earn that title sometimes. The guy in this story especially. 😂 I looked up “the y-word” and I got way worse results, none of which were “yankee.” One was an anti-Semitic slur and the other was furry terminology.

Some people just need to feel offended. And I don't mean that in an anti-woke sense. Racial slurs are disgusting. This guy just wants to turn Yankee into one so he gets to feel victimized. I find some white Americans are just so desperate to not feel like the bad guys for once. As individuals they're not but historically their hands are stained with the blood of the indigenous people, African slaves and most immigrants.

The model ship story has my blood boiling. It doesn't matter how old anyone is, or how intoxicating anyone was in that story. A basic level of human respect and decency was denied, and OP got hurt for it. 3500$ is a lot to pay someone back for, but OP's boyfriend isnt the only one at fault. Any one of those dudes could have done the decent thing, but they all participated in the "game" even after OP made it clear that she wanted them to stop. They're all liable. Some might think that OP's boyfriend especially is responsible, and you might be right, but ultimately everyone there had a hand in the way things turned out, and so they should all pony up to replace it. At the MINIMUM. I get that OP's boyfriend might not have known the real value of the item, both monetarily and sentimentally, but there's no conceivable reality where that would excuse his behavior. An honest apology from the gang was a good start, now them all making it right and at least replacing the item is where it needs to go from there. If they can't even do that, then fuck 'em, they deserve to go to court, and OP would need to reevaluate their relationship.
@Scarlett.Granger
@Scarlett.Granger 2 года назад
Also, besides from sentimental and monetary value - nothing excuses treating his girlfriend this shitty and "ganging up" on her with his friends. She let them party in HER apartment on HIS birthday, doing all the duties and they treated her mean and horrible. They weren't good guests before they broke her stuff. If thats how my boyfriend would treat me with his friends over, he'd be out quicker than he can say "it's not that bad". And thats not considering the value of the ship.
@Deeps429
@Deeps429 2 года назад
Also for the BF to say 'we were drunk' does not give him a pass. A: The ship is sentimental and valuable as well as fragile, his inebriated state is a recipe for disaster and therefore he is liable as you said. B: "We were drunk", is not an excuse if you assault someone/ become violent... that rule can apply to the ship situation, and yes someone got hurt... the GF.
@carstennsfw
@carstennsfw 2 года назад
It's OPs fault alone! I'm totally on her BF's side. It's so obvious what she should have done: When her boyfriend - no everytime a guest - is invited the first time, they get an inventory list as well as a complete room tour. On that list there are all her posessions categoriezed in qudrants: "high sentimental value AND high monetary value", "high sentimental value, BUT no high monetary value", "low sentimental value, BUT high monetary value" and last but not least "I don't care if you break that". So her boyfriend as well as all guests would easiliy only pick her cheap non-sentimental belongings to play "pranks" with and break, and leave the other stuff alone, even if they're intoxicated of course. Duuhhhhh! /sarkasm, if you did not get that up until now
@BurningWell
@BurningWell 2 года назад
As a side note. It was originally a derogatory term the British came up with for Americans way back in the Revolutionary war era but those early Americans just went with it and adopted it as their own way to refer to New Englanders. Just like the song Yankee Doodle. It originally was sung by the British officers to mock the colonial troops. Basically it implied that the colonists would stick a feather in their hat and think it was high fashion or something. But then, early Americans adopted it and added verses that mocked the British and praised then General George Washington, turning it from something used to mock them into something they sang with pride. That's what Americans used to do when insulted.

@IluviaOscura
@IluviaOscura 2 года назад
On that note though, it very much is a derogatory term in the south still. It's akin to calling a northerner a redneck or hillbilly. Not wildly derogatory. But just offensive enough to start a fight if enough alcohol is involved.
@bcaye
@bcaye 2 года назад
Evolution of the term aside, it really is not ideal for the pet to change their name. I have rescued pets that had been called unfortunate names and try to assimilate them to a same sounding name. It has worked well. But for a work animal, no. They must have complete assurance of self to understand orders. Also, Yankee is only an insult from Southerners who still have bitterness about the Civil War. Well over 170 years ago. Grow up. Give Yankee a good ear rub from me!
@Nekulturny

The fact that they are saying the word Yankee, and then calling the n-word the n-word and not using the actual word clearly shows these things are not equal in their vileness. Case closed on the crazy BF.

@adiinbar993
@adiinbar993 2 года назад
@@Flightcontrol96 But that's a catch-22, because the word is only offensive because it's the name of New York's baseball team, so if the team get renamed, the word will instantly lose its offensive connotations, leaving you with no reason for having renamed the team. Then New Yorkers would start clamoring to go back to the old name, and....you see where this is going. Also, if the team is renamed that means they'll call it something else, which would have the undesirable side effect of making a previously innocuous word offensive. The only way to avoid that is to name it something that's already offensive, which would defeat the purpose of renaming it in the first place. So, I'm afraid that won't work, and if we want to shut down the Yankees we need to get some good pitchers.

Surprised that his parents backed him up in the last story, but at the same time, it kind of explains WHY he is such an asshole, if they were condoning this kind of behaviour since childhood. And I think the situation is very much clear cut. He did NOT have the right to NOT tell his girlfriend about his kids, nor decide when to tell her. Period. That's a super important information he had no business withholding. He HAD TO inform her about the kids before they started going out. OP just fixed how mistake.

@CoRLex-jh5vx
@CoRLex-jh5vx 2 года назад
@@hero-bo7qc good job not understanding etymology! England is actually Angle Land, as in the Anglo-Saxons. Englishist sounds dumb, and foreign words/names that are 'converted' to an English spelling are referred to as anglicised, establishing its use as an adjective for English related stuff; hence, anglicist. As a side note, given the places named after the saxons are typically converted into sex, as in West, East and South Saxony becoming Wessex, Essex, and Sussex; sexism could be read as being racist to saxons.

Yankee Story: I do know that, in other countries, yankee is sometimes considered derogatory, but I don't think it's ever considered a slur. For example, I think it has a negative connotation in japan, and is used kinda synonymously with "delinquent." But, again, there's a huge difference between naming your pet something derogatory, and naming them a slur. Hell, I know plenty of people who call their pets "asshole," or "shithead," affectionately.

The only way I can think of Yankee being offensive is if you're Japanese. It's supposed to be used to describe girls who act like, for want of a better word, like gangstas. Long skirts, dyed hair, etc but even so, it's fallen out of use.
