It's not actually set by the artist, while they charge "x" for a painting whether they get the commission depends totally on the value the person buying it places on it. Perhaps a better indicator of the general value of art from a specific artist is what the secondary market painting (or other media) values are.

@Kamikaze Killjoy you misunderstood my point. If someone values your art which pays you $45/hr+materials then they buy it. If they don't then your price exceeds the market value for your art to that individual. Others may decide that your $45/hr + supplies is worth it. As you raise your prices fewer people will find the value of your art worth the price. This cuts demand. At some point as you raise prices and the demand falls you begin making less money despite higher prices due to to few people find your product worth the price you set. I'll skip the additional factors that affect values such as prints (s/n or otherwise). It all comes down to what people find the value of your work is regardless of what value you put on your time. My ex 25 years ago wouldn't pick up a brush for even $100/hr for originals and that value would go up if prints were involved. The demand still exceeded the supply. She dropped out of the fine art world for a combination of personal reasons and carpal tunnel, but I spent more time than I care to remember around the fine art world.

It's ok for people to not want to pay for art, like me I guess, but what I only get to admire is the free stuff (it's good enough tbh). What I don't think should be allowed is the entitlement. I understand as someone who is entering the art of music. I'll practice a song if someone requests, not if someone demands. I get your point but for me it's more of the intention and principle not the money. Just a constructive opinion. I do not, by any means, mean to oppose you.

Anything that someone produces should not be given away for free unless the one who produces it wants to. I weave baskets and I sell them. If anyone wanted one for free, I would tell them to get stuffed. I also give them as gifts when I choose. I made some cradles with hand made quilts and pillows for their dolls for my 2 great nieces for Christmas one year and my sil wanted 3 more. Since I sold them for $120.00, I said no. Any creative product is worth the makers time and materials and no one should expect it for free.
