From a quick check; clarified butter is just when you melt the butter and remove the remaining semi-solid bits that sit at the bottom of the container. You don’t have to add oil, but apparently it does change the smoke-point because the chunky bits smoke easier, so removing them can help.
@eponack
@eponack 7 месяцев назад
It’s also known as ghee. It is heated until the milk solids turn brown and fall to the bottom. Clarified butter does have a high smoke point and is healthier for a number of reasons, especially for diabetic people. Ghee is also shelf stable, so it is believed to be originally done to make the material last longer.

clarified butter very much is a thing. It's basically the butter but without the proteins that get burnt way more easily, so kinda only the fat part. Usually you heat up the butter slowly until it seperates. Some of the protein parts float to the surface and become a foam-like stuff that you can skim off (i think it's whey), the others sink to the bottom of the pot (iirc that's mostly casein) and water well..evaporates. If you skim off the foam and slowly pour the rest out of the pot to not take the solids on the bottom to the new pot with the clear liquid, you got "clarified butter" in the new pot then. Might add, "clarified" in this case is not meant in an...esoteric way, but literally - clarified butter when heated is a clear liquid (it becomes solid when cold, usually wiht a consistency similar to margerine) that pretty much looks like any common vegetable oil.

In a similar vein of things, one of them (thinking I was a satanist) asked me if I believed in god and when I said no, he triumphantly stated "so you beleve in Satan!". I said no again, he was confused. Obviously if I didn't believe in the one, I had to believe in the other. I can see how for some it can be hard to wrap their had around things on the scale of an entire planet or microorganisms too small too see, but how to be confused by stuff on a simplicity level of "I like fish and I like cake, but I don't always eat them at the same time" is beyond me...

Another note on the biological species definition is it also falls apart with a lot of plants. A good example of this is pitcher plants of the same genus where you can get fertile hybrids between many different species. It's always neat to see a name tag with 5 different species listed on it all condensed into one fertile hybrid that can eventually continue the chain of hybridization.

The thing is, bone doesn't survive long at all just like that woman said. That's why we call them fossils, because they're not bone. Basically the bone that was once there slowly got replaced with rock. So fossils are rock, no longer bone. It's an extremely rare process, but still common enough for plenty of discoveries to be made by average people. There are areas where fossilization is far more likely to occur, there is a huge bias in the fossil record. If you've never found a fossil, you just aren't looking in the right places.

19:32 Not to be pedantic, but I'm a culinary student, so I feel like I have some grounds to speak on this. Clarified butter is made by separating the milk solids (the natural sugars in milk) and evaporating the water content. This leaves you with, functionally, pure milk fat. You don't add olive oil to it, and it's not what this guy says it is, so he's still wrong, but it is very much a thing. Most of the mother sauces, and many soups call for clarified butter. Removing the moisture and milk solids helps it keep longer too.

An acquaintance of mine shared a Facebook post that was very similar to this one, full of weird views that sound innocent but are actually harmful, as well as outright disinformation. Clarified butter (or ghee) is a butter product. You heat it gently until the milk solids (casein and whey) separate from the other components, and some water evaporates, you end up with basically just grease / fat after straining. It is lactose-free and therefore the sugar doesn't burn and char. The smoke point is also higher. Thanks for coming to my ted talk

Hi Click! I bake and cook a lot, and I can tell you with 100% certainty that clarified butter is indeed a thing. The guy in the reddit post was actually pretty close to getting the definition right, however, the process of making clarified butter is much simpler than he makes it out to be. Making clarified butter requires you to heat up butter in a saucepan, just enough for it to melt, but not enough for it to start boiling. The milk solids will be extracted from the melted butter and rises to the top of the liquid, where you can scoop out said milk solids with a slotted spoon. When you've scooped out the milk solids, you're left with the butterfat, which is usually known as clarified butter in the culinary world. No oil, no extraction of the fat, it's quite literally just melting butter.

@@katm1379 Yep. Or go Aussie and cook down mushrooms for a Full Australian breakfast. …I don’t know if we’ve actually explained to him WHY we cook and bake with clarified butter, tho - Click, it’s because the milk solids (whey proteins and casein) will burn at a much lower temperature than butterfat. The smoke point different is huge: it’s 163-191C vs 252C. So say, sautéing onions for the start of a curry, or letting mushrooms get really nice and cooked down to just pure umami. And on top of all that, it’s also a preservation technique. The milk solids in butter are what causes it to go rancid, so if you’re in a place that doesn’t traditionally salt butter for all butter preservation, there’s a good chance that clarified butter is the standard preservation method.

Clarified butter is actually a thing. Its made by melting regular butter and then skimming off the froth that floats on top. It’s typically used to make dipping sauces for things like lobster, shrimp, and sautéed veggies. Adding olive oil to just regular butter raises the smoke point (the point at which any given cooking fat burns). Olive oil has a higher smoke point than butter, so by combining the two, you can still get a lot of that yummy butter flavor while sautéing, without risking burning the cooking fats and thus ruining the dish.
@Tiarys
@Tiarys 9 месяцев назад
Also, clarified butter can also be called ghee, seen often in Indian recipes. Truly clarified butter/ghee can also be shelf stable (from my understanding because it ends up being a pure or darn close to pure fat, with the water evaporated off and the solids skimmed off while it clarifies).

The Knight's Templar didn't even worship Bathomet. It was just a conspericy against them made up by the Catholic church because they wanted the templar's wealth and influence. 38:20 Bonus fact about fossils: she's technically right in that bones/tissue *don't* survive for that long in most conditions (save for the occasional specimen that died somewhere in the permafrost - i.e. where it's below freezing year-round - or it got stuck in something that essentially seals it from bacteria like amber/tar/etc*). What *does* happen is that under much more common conditions (though again, not all the time, otherwise yes, we would be swimming in bones), bones can get buried in places where the soil composition is such that it retains the shape of the bones as they decay, and it happens so gradually that other nearby minerals trickle in and fill those gaps - so what you're left with is basically a very slow equivalent of taking a bone, pouring stuff around it to make a mould, and then pouring stuff into the mould to make a replica of the original bone. You'll see simpler versions of this in things like imprint fossils (where it was just the mark left by a shell, leaf, etc. in clay or a similarly suitable material that was preserved), or even in present-day times if someone leaves a footprint in a place where it doesn't rain very often. So yes, not actual dinosaur bones (hence why if you feel one it might feel more like stone than bone), but also not artificially made as part of some massive conspiracy to hide slightly different types of bones, and still a good representation of what the original looked like.

I’m realizing that some of these people dig in their heals actually remind me of my mother: if she gets into an argument, she will never admit she was wrong. If presented with information to completely debunk her, she will never give you something like “Huh, okay I was wrong”, the best you’ll get out of her is “whatever”, not even an apology. I would bet that at some point these people realized they were wrong, but they will do anything to avoid actually admitting that.

I've seen a "frunk" before. One of my customers (I do people's online shopping and curbside pickup) has an electric truck with a frunk. It was really weird when I first saw it, but having all that extra storage must be great (If I recall correctly, the batteries are actually along the bottom).
