I've never encountered someone who worked somewhere trying to get out of helping me. I don't understand how Karens think someone is lying when they say they don't work somewhere.

I at least know how to sign "I'm sorry" and "Can you read lips?" And then i resort to either speech to text or writing things down. Why on earth would you belittle someone who has a disability at all?

I'll admit. I'm hearing impaired so I wear large hearing aids in my ears (Over the Ear models) and I often mess with people by pretending to not understand them. When I leave them, I always thank them perfectly.

Gee, I didn’t know harassing a customer of a business is going to magically turn the victim into an employee. In that case, can a Karen make me uncomfortable and harass me in one of many stores I’ve tried applying for yet never got hired to?

From my experience working in retail, whenever they say they're friends with the manager/owner, they aren't just lying, but the manager/owner actually talk about how batshit crazy they are.

For that last story, I could pretty heavily relate. I have really bad social anxiety and me being only 13, I hate when people yell at me and I immediately start crying, even when people barely raise their voice. It doesn't help that I have depression either cause when I try to talk to my mom about it, she starts to get mad, asking why I'm depressed when there "isn't anything to be depressed about." I often have bad days and having social anxiety makes it hard to talk to a therapist. If you see this I hope you have a good day and please talk to people about their issues. It can seriously help.

As a ASL interpreting major I can confirm that the main reaction I see others do when communicating with the Deaf are shouting louder or asking if they can lip read,

I took ASL in high school. Part of our grade was predicated on our involvement in the deaf community. And let me tell you...if you get the chance...take it. I always had an incredible time playing games, learning new signs, and just interacting with the community.

It's amazing that only a very few of these stories feature victims that tell the Karen to eff off right off the bat.

I've had numerous run-ins with Karens, and my favorite was when I was in a mall and listening to music with headphones, and my earrings and headphones got tangled. I asked a random person for help, and she said that I needed to leave her alone, young man, or she would call security. I corrected her on my gender and she flipped her shit. I left pretty hastily.

Is it just me or are 75% of the posts on these sites posted by people with varying degrees of social anxiety? It is what it is I just find it funny how often that is mentioned in the posts.

As someone with social anxiety as well, I fully understood why she started sobbing when the Karen yelled at her. I do the same exact thing. Thankfully it doesn't happen often cause I'm a 6'1 heavy set dude and look pretty intimidating when I have my bushy beard. Even though in reality I'm just a huge teddy bear and would only hurt someone if they touched me or my family.

For those that don't know, in the first story, OP is standing next to a digger to make sure that it doesn't hit anyone or anything. Those large construction machines have numerous blind spots and a driver can't see things nearby or at certain angles. OP was there to shout out when the digger operator is close to hitting something. If someone wasn't there the operator could drive onto unstable land, not knowing about it, hit someone walking past or damage a building or other property.

I really felt that last one. I also have crippling social anxiety and is why I always shop at like 4AM when the only other people around are employees. I'll pretty much only shop during the day if I'm with someone I can talk to so I'm focused on them and not the horrifying amount of people around me.

My mum used to teach A.S.L and sometimes she just randomly starts signing the things she’s saying (not big like spelling out every big word but just like if she says “sunrise” she make the sign for sunrise) it got to the point that me and my brother know the entire alphabet in sign language and can understand when mom tell us something in sign language. It might sound a bit weird but I love it about her. She’s an amazing mom and the fact that she knows sign language really helped with her job. I love her and am so proud of her.

Last time I was this early.. You could still meet someone named Karen & didn't have to wonder if they were a "KAREN" 🤣😂

oh god, i'm the same way as that girl in the last story. that kind of thing triggers, not just my social anxiety, but my PTSD, and i would've had a HORRIBLE panic attack. that's one of the many reasons i can't leave home alone.

Omg, the classic call of the classic Wild Karen! I love it! 😂😂😂 I too know sign language (because my mom is deaf) and have used that on occasion to get out of helping “karen’s” and have gotten some really nasty insults just to me to talk AND sign back to the “Karen/Maren (male Karen)” and usually say, “wow, and here I was about to give away this $100 (shows real $100 bill or sometimes a $50 depends on whatever large bill I have on hand to donate) dollars to the next person who was kind to people with disabilities (I am disabled that’s a whole other story) because a little kindness goes a long way...” then turn and walk away. The look and utter Karen sputtering is priceless.

I worked retail/customer service for yrs. And take it from me, NO ONE with "crippling" social anxiety would be hired for retail or customer service. And while I was working I was known for eating Karens alive.

There should be a law that sends all Karen's to go to war for us. There's gonna be a lot of "siNgLe mOtHer's" at war if this happened.

My response to people like this in these stories is to just say. "OK" and keep going about my business because you can't talk sense to stupid people.

The reason why carens know managers was what made my night.

I get social anxiety issues too, but it tends to result in frustration and anger rather than crying. Not great for dealing with a crowd, but fairly useful for Karens. I once berated one for having apparently failed elementary school because she couldn't tell the difference between a shopper wearing a magenta shirt and Wal-Mart blue.

I used to work for the Boston Duck Tours. Our uniform was khakis, dark blue shirt *with logo,* nametag *with logo,* and a necklace with a duck call in the shape of a duck bill (either yellow or orange, very noticeable regardless). I primarily worked in the Prudential area, right outside the mall. I would go into Barnes & Noble all the time. They don't have a uniform, per se... it's more like business casual. Many employees did not wear khakis, their shirts could be a variety of kinds and colors, and nowhere did they have a BDT logo or paraphernalia. I was ALWAYS asked for help, where something is, etc. at least once whenever I went in there (primarily for coffee). The absolutely baffled expressions I would get in response to my "no, I don't work here" always astonished me. Like... you see a nametag and assume the person works there or something? Literally nothing else about their appearance matters, only that you need help and they have a nametag? I would usually indicate the logo on the shirt or the duck bill around my neck, and so many people *still* didn't get it. Luckily, no one ever fought me about it. I was a 6'2", 240lbs guy with a deep voice and a beard, so that doesn't often invite confrontation, but so many people clearly didn't believe me or understand something I *still* see as incredibly obvious. Observational skills. More people need more of them.

The part where the guy says "just because their shirt happens to be blue" reminds me of why I never wear navy blue to Walmart. I have been verbally abused multiple times by random people who assume I work there for just wearing navy blue. I'm literally pushing a cart and have earbuds in and I'm checking stuff off my list and people start snapping their fingers at me. I really hate grocery shopping and I really just prefer to be left alone when I'm out in public doing things like that so it's quite irritating for me

What I'm always wondering about is why people interact with Karens. If a Karen would talk to me in such disrespectful ways I'd just walk away. Ain't got no time for that bs

I just once had it ever happen to me, that a woman thought I was working at garden center. I was just shopping for plants with my mom, but had a forest green knitted jacked on, that somehow seemed to look like a uniform. The woman asked me or directions, and I just had to take a moment to realize what was going on. I told her I don't work here, and she was immediately apologetic. However since I shopped like a billion times in this store I could head her in the direction she needed anyways. The other way around I don't always get recognized as an employee at my real job (a museum) because we don't have a dress code. There where several occasions on days when the museum was closed and the guests stood in our foyer dumbfounded (the museum is sharing the foyer with an institute and university building). Just whenever I ask if I can help them they realize I am not a student lol.

Former Wally World employee. I worked overnight with a deaf man. Even he held his ears when our backdoor alarm went off. I stocked pet food with him. My signing knowledge is minimal, so he helped me out. Nicest guy!

I often go shopping after work, and don't have the opportunity to change out of my work uniform, a black company shirt tucked in to black pants with black work shoes. Idk what it is, but I've noticed I get stopped a lot in Walmarts and Targets for help. Neither of those stores have remotely close to my uniform. I usually tell them I don't work there but help them out anyway if I can. People are interesting, man.

If I ever get into an IDWHL situation and they ask for my manager I'm gonna call up my manager from my actual work (if they aren't busy of course) and have them explain I don't work there I work here

I go to Walmart about once a week (mostly through the grocery online pickup) but occasionally, I have to go into the store because I forgot to add something to my order. Both in the pickup area and in the store I have seen just horrible people treating the employees like garbage. It's amazing how many times I 'happen to see an item I need' and have to go between them to get it as these terrible people seem to think that getting two inches from the face of the employee is normal speaking distance. I know quite a few of the folks that work there and I've never had a problem... Except with other customers. What goes through these types of peoples heads to make them think this is how you're supposed to treat other people?!

Any Karen ever tries to stop me from getting away from them will wish they had left me the hell alone while they sit in jail.

I had this happen to me just now. Browsing a Big Lots (while in uniform for a restaurant that’s not too far off). A nice old lady comes up to me asking if this store had any sanitizing wipes (because COVID-19). I told her I didn’t know because I didn’t work here. We both had a good laugh as she noticed the apron I was wearing for said restaurant. We just wished each other a good day and parted ways. Update: Happened again. Man asked me if I knew where the Hardware section was before I politely told him I didn’t work here. Like before, we wished each other a good day before parting ways. If this happens a third time, I’m applying to Big Lots.
