I once had someone fire me for taking ONE sick day. She claimed I was "still on probation" even though no probationary period had been discussed. I told her she had to pay me the minimum required time for making me come in just to get fired, and she told me I had to work it. Cue malicious compliance. Basically, I just walked around, said goodbye to my regulars, and told everyone to help themselves when they asked me for things, because I didn't work there anymore. That lasted as long as it took her to call the labor board, and cut me a check, which she had the audacity to ask me to wait to cash until she said I could. I took it to her bank on what would have been my pay day and had it certified. I hope it screwed her.
It would have screwed her more depositing it at your own bank. Her bank wouldn't pay out if she didn't have the funds available, but if you made the deposit at your bank then when the funds weren't available she'd be hit with an overdraft fee from her bank. Of course, you'd probably get hit with a fee too for the check you deposited being returned, but that just gives you an opportunity to be extra petty and demand she reimburse you for your fee.

When my dad was working, he's now retired, he was an industrial electrician on a facility that straddled a river. If they had to go on "tip toes" to reach something, for any reason, they had to get scaffolding and a safety harness. This is because they could easily be blown off into the river by a strong gust of wind. One of my dads colleagues was badly hurt when his safety harness snagged and was cut by damaged scaffolding and he had to be rescued by river police. This didn't stop his superiors trying to get my dad and his workmates into disregarding safety laws to speed things up. Luckily my dad was the shop steward of a very strong union and his bosses couldn't actually force them into doing so.
My dad is an engineer and one time on site forgot to wear some part of the safety equipment. He got yelled at as soon as it got noticed. He immediately grabbed it. It would cost any company way too much money, if safety is ignored and something happens. What's a couple of bucks against a multi-million law suit, that the company will definitely loose? But what do I know? I don't have a business degree. I just have common sense.
The last story reminds me of one my boyfriend told me. He has one of those names. Think Lucas, Luke, Lukey and uses all three interchangeably. He started work experience and his boss asked him what he liked to be called, he said "I don't care, call me anything" the boss called him shithead all week.
Story 3: I actually had a manager start chewing me out on my last day about some shit that no on else would do. I got the heat of it despite it being the first time I didn't. I just smiled and nodded until he realized idgaf and it was my last day.

The first and third stories were rather unsatisfying. First story the uncle would have also had to deal with the noise and there's no evidence the neighbor was that bothered. Third story the manager wasn't even blamed and the OP was still overworked the entire time.
Ohhh I get to do another Dutch lesson! Alright, here we go. The word "schatje" is derived from the word "schat", meaning "treasure". The "je" at the end makes it a "small version of the word" and in this form it's used as a term of endearment, indeed like "cutie". R-Slash actually didn't do half bad pronouncing it! The "sch" part contains the Dutch "g" sound that is next to impossible to pronounce for English speaking people. An easy substitution would be to pronounce it as a "k" or English "g". Barb (and possibly the owner) probably thought dispute OP putting in a 2 week notice that if a transition meeting wasn’t set up then then OP couldn’t leave, meaning that they didn’t have to go to the effort of hiring and/or training anywhere from (I think) 1-8 people for this all of OP tasks.

@Daniëlla, can you please help me with the proper pronunciation, because when I was little, my Aunt, and Uncle (in the US) gifted me a beautiful Gordon Setter dog and had named her, what sounded like "Shotsee" (completely unsure of the spelling) but I was told that it meant "Sweetheart". Now, I can't exactly remember what language she said it derived from (I believe she said Swiss, or Dutch, not sure) but I would love to know if it's the same. Thanks so much!!!
@@raiderghost2475 native Dutch speaker here. Schatje can be pronounced by sorta putting the back part of your tongue to your mouth roof. Kinda like, prepare to make a gargling sound? so "S-gargle G-ah-tsjuh". its difficult to explain it to English speakers but an easier form is 'Skattie' it's more informal street slang from back in my highschool days. same meaning, different and easier pronunciation: Skattie is pronounce like Scat (a = ah but less emphasis on the h) + Tea. Say it fast and boom you're done. For more easier explanation, Google translate would be an easier way to check/hear how you pronounce words. hope it helps

I think Dabney mentioned once that he has some sort of completely soundproof booth he records in? Presumably that keeps Yugo noise out. It does lead to a remarkable lack of puppy bloopers, though, unfortunately for us.
Dabney...a little over 20 years ago, I was brought into my then-manager's office, asking me to start undermining the guy that trained me. Knowing the manager, and the rest of the staff, I wasn't going to do that, because I felt it was a sleazy move, and because I didn't trust them. (Apparently, they had expected me to do this from the day I was hired, though nobody told me this.) Well...several months later, the axe finally fell. I had just co-authored an article for them that was going to get published, and they wanted to know if I still wanted to be credited (ummm...YEAH; you're not going to screw me out of that). I was also told that I could leave a half-hour early. I told them that I was going to finish up my work, and leave at my regular time. When they asked me why, I looked them squarely in the eye and told them, "When I walk out of here tonight, I WILL NOT give you the satisfaction of thinking that I somehow "owe" you for leaving early. When I walk out of here, I will owe you NOTHING."

I recently left a job where I was the only person who processed requests from the business through IT. It was mostly manual, but I had a process in place (fully documented). I turned in my notice (from vacation) because my manager had threatened me with my job, and I already had a new one lined up. They had no one to take over the process until halfway through my last week. I turned over all my documentation, did the best turnover I could (in 8 hours a day) and walked away happy. Unless you know you can cover someone's job, don't threaten them with it. It rarely turns out well.
That third story, I literally told my friend that I was going to quit my job (jokingly) he says “YOU CANT!” Really demandingly. As a defiant individual, I was literally 2 secs away from quitting cuz I hate being commanded/demanded to do anything.😅😅 but I’m not dumb enough to quit my job over something stupid.
The "sch" sound in Dutch for schatje is basically impossible to describe how to say, so good attempt in pronouncing it. In Dutch you basically say the letters "sg" but the g also sounds very different to the English one rather than the English "sh" sound most people use for sch
I was 3 days away from leaving a job, a foreman told me off for getting behind on my job, due to a mechanical breakdown outside of my control... got to work the next day, reported immediately to the plant nurse and said I had diarrhea (this was an automatic go home for a worker in a meat plant) gad nothing to lose at that point... lol loved being 12 foot tall and bullet proof

Story 2: Working at a gas station also carries significant health risks due to prolonged exposure to gasoline fumes. Remember kids don't sniff gas. Story 4: If you buy something for a business and then choose not to sell it, you can't demand money back for it after already transforming it into the product for sale. Day old baked goods can't be sold and get thrown away every day.
Accounting story - OP should have copied all the department heads with the email as to why there tasks weren’t done along with an apology saying the owner specifically told OP that such and such was the head of accounting.
If I were that uncle I definitely would've put up several wind chimes, because I absolutely freaking love them. My nana had several, so they make me think of her and make me smile because of it.
Yeah, I'm not surprised a gas station manager would do something like that. For many, if it doesn't make money, then it's not important. That's why gas station restrooms are so filthy: the staff is specifically forbidden from cleaning them because they don't make money. Some may say they can do it if they have extra time at the end of their shift, but that's a lie. They make sure that there's no such thing as extra time. This may not be the case for larger, more reputable chain locations, but small-business ones? Yeah.
I was leaving a job, I was a bandsaw operator in a meatworks and the saw broke down. (I was workjng on briskets) I did what work I could with a knife while waiting for the saw to be repaired. Had a foreman tell me off because some meat was being wasted, telling me every kne lost cost the company $10.00. I was not being paid the full sawyer rate. As the job was considered a casual sawyer job, (whole other issue) but the foreman bitched at me for a good 5 minutes. I was past caring at this point, took the telling off, and waited. Next day I go to work, straight into see the nurse and say I have diarrhea, I didn't, but that's an automatic go home... so got paid for a full day on my second last day while at home, went in to work on the last day miraculously recovered. Bitch at me over money lost while not owning me fully, see what happens...
I wonder what gas station that was. I used to work at speedway and safety for work orders wasn't strict at all. The contractors were all over the store all the time with ladders and such. Never had to shut down the registers for that.
Second post has me thinking of my current job and the expectations my boss has from us. His business model is quantity over quality, just to make ends meet. So recently I've decided to make a half-hearted effort just to meet the expected quota. He gets customer complaints saying that they're not satisfied with the outcome? Too bad, I'm gonna keep doing a crappy job until he ups the prices to make the quality worthwhile. If he thinks that it's possible to do a perfect job and make a net win out of it by only accepting lowball offers, he's welcome to try it himself.
I have worked in accounts payable for years for different companies and have a good rep as a purchase ledger clerk. I hate this role with a passion now unfortunately due to how shitty you get treated in it
WTF kind of messed up HOA bans all fences? I get that HOA’s suck and have the most asinine rules, but no fences? Does that also mean no dogs or kids that might require a fenced yard to be safe?
For large supermarkets shutting down all registers for even an hour can cost them a huge amount of money, many people in the store have places to be and can't wait at the till for an hour or two. The bad reviews and customer satisfaction issues not included you get a huge profit dip for up to a week or so after as people don't take the extra time to go to that supermarket just in case the tills are still closed.
As a Dutch person the last story is pretty weird. Dutch people don't usually go around calling each other "schatje". If my boss did that to me I would feel incredibly uncomfortable.

I'd be a little shit (I'm 21 keep in mind) that if a woman told me to give her kid my money. I'd be carrying around counterfeit bills just for this purpose. My friend knows how to make it so we can use it to teach thiefs a lesson. But I'd give the kid that money.
In the idiot CEO story I highly doubt that he’d actually sue OP. If he’s as much of a miser as OP says he is then he would absolutely hate giving money to lawyers because they’re so expensive. And if he did wind up filing a lawsuit he’d probably just represent himself or force an employee to do it in which case the courts would still rule in OP’s favor because he did exactly as instructed.
