R-XSR | What's Going On Here?

The receiver (r-xsr) and the radio (in this case - qx7) has to be on the same firmware. They have to match up or they won't work together.
Let me add to this.. Frsky had done some naughty stuff here and made things really confusing for newer people. There's 3 different Frsky firmware versions that are in play and it makes old users MAD, intermediate users frustrated, and new users loose interest in the hobby due to confusion. Worst yet, companies are selling the stuff and obviously have little understanding of the issue to help thier customers. I did this video when I noticed the crap was hitting the fan with Frsky and I have completely gotten away from the brand. Backward compatibility is a must!
That said, I am totally willing to help you out!
I just ask for you to research the 3 differences of confusing firmware Frsky offers, on your own:
Frsky ACCST D16 191112
Frsky ACCST D16 V2.0
Frsky ACCESS
These are not backward compatible and they don't work with one another... Silly right..😩 Your radio (transmitter) has to be running the same firmware as the rxsr, PERIOD!
☆☆☆Once bound - Getting stick movements in Betaflight...
Besides researching the 3 variants online yourself, you need some settings in Betaflight set:
The Ports Tab - Serial RX is on the correct uart
In configuration tab - look for the "receiver" box, it should be set up
Serial-based receiver (speaker, sbus
Sbus

@@propsoff I do have one question, if you don't mind. What is the benefit of using the S-PORT for the added telemetry? I'm using an AIO with only 2 uarts and I'm trying to decide what I should give up/keep. Thanks!

@@cgmiller82 S.port Telemetry allows your transmitter to receive Telemetry data and also in some cases Lua script so you can change settings on your flight controller via your radio. I used to fly a lot of line of sight but the smaller this stuff gets the less I fly line of sight and the less I care about telemetry. Basically all the data you see in your goggles can be seen on the screen of your radio. Would you like more details? No problem for me to tell you more..

@@propsoff That is exactly what I wanted to know, thank you! I practice VLOS just to increase my FPV skills, but I primarily fly FPV, so extended telemetry data is not that useful (at least at this point). Putting the data up on the OSD and getting recorded by the DVR is good enough for me right now, so giving up the telemetry UART for camera control is what I'm going to do for this project. I really appreciate the advice! Thank you!

I should have listened to you in the first place and not "JB". He said to reverse the black and red wires on the servo plug which I did at first and I am lucky that I didn't fry my new R-XSR receiver. I put the wires back like you have them and downloaded the latest firmware and was able to successfully flash my R-XSR receiver. Thank you very much for the correct procedure.

I felt your pain Dave! When I seen this coming I thought to myself, "Oh no!".. I started to get really frustrated, I had a lot of money invested in Frsky equipment and I knew how goofy this was going to be.. I didn't realize how bad it really was going to be though, LOL.. @@lowrevsrc Do yourself a huge favor and go through Opentx University and learn Companion for Opentx. The radios (Xlite and Jumper run Opentx).. Fyi.. Spektrum radios run a proprietary software/firmware and their receivers run that same proprietary firmware.. Therefore, there's really nothing you can do, and the premium price along with it.. However, you purchased an open TX product that has open firmware. The issue is you're just buying the radio and it's empty, you have to put the information into it. How that happens is on an SD card, so there's kind of a lot to learn - but you don't have to pay 678. $900. for a radio.. You really do need to learn the OpenTX firmware side of things.. In OpenTX University, it has kind of like classroom type learning.. LOL, it's a hobby and that's for sure.

@@propsoff hey dude, got a new hardware update for ya. got my speedybee adapter 2 today. its 0200 so ill keep it short. i got it to hook up to my tyro69. way better in terms of connection speed! beats bluetooth bigtime. only thing i see to question is vtx config. i know its set up in betaflight, but the adapter 2 shows not configured. btw. it IS mislabeled. download the manual. one of the usb ports is a dead end and wont connect anything. the port it says to connect is the WRONG one. use the thin side, youll see when you look at it.

F.port is the same process. Instead of dumping the standard firmware, you load F.port.. I never used it - slower packet rate..

PropsOff, have you updated one of these ACCST R-XSRs to ACCESS? I have a QX7 that came setup with ACCESS, but ACCST is an option when setting up a model. I built my first plane with an R6, but I accidently bought an R-XSR before I knew I needed PWM outputs to run the servos. So now I am going to use the R-XSR with the sbus output to feed a Z3 flight controller (or so I thought). The R-XSR binds to the radio, but I don't get any output from the sbus. What would you do?

What version number is printed on the package, the r-xsr came in? I have seen V2 firmware on recently delivered ones and that won't work with ACCESS. You can download the newest ACCESS firmware from Frsky's website to your SD card. I have a tool that measures Sbus output, that way I don't need a flight controller (it's handy). I haven't messed with Frsky since they published V2 - so frustrating! Your Qx7 will update the r-xsr to the newest ACCESS. Also, did you make sure your in Sbus mode vs PPM? Note: Just covering a few bases starting out here... A good buddy of mine, John, runs "RC Video Reviews" on RU-vid. He has the Z3 in a few builds. I bet he could square you up 10 times faster than me. Autopilot isn't my bag.

Sorry, to answer your question, No I have not. I left Frsky the same day they explained the baloney V2 firmware. I knew the backwards compatibility was a sham and got some heat from RU-vidrs over it, haha, until they fully understood what it ment. I jumped on the Radiomaster bandwagon and haven't looked back..

I learned something today. I just ordered a Happymodel Crux3 with the R-XSR receiver thinking its a better one. I have the Jumper T8SG plus transmitter. Crossing my fingers it's going to bind with no problems because I have heard their could be issues. Supposed to work using the Frskyx protocol that my transmitter supports .

Well, I have a problem. I followed your instructions by the letter and downloaded the RXSR_FCC_ACCST_191112.frk firmware dated 11/22/2019 and I keep getting an error message using either the S.PORT or EXT Module of "FW update error Not responding". I have checked my wiring numerous times and compared it to what I see here in this video and it is correct I am sure. Any suggestions?

This looks so easy. If you have any idea what's going on I'd appreciate the advice. I built my first quad. That 3 inch Tadpole with the Succex micro f4 V2.1 16x16 stack. I soldered the wires for the receiver to the flight controller in the spots the FC instructions tell me to. When I power the quad on with a battery I get no lights on the receiver. My radio isn't picking it up even though I did bind the receiver before installing it. I used a smoke stopper to make sure I wasn't going to blow anything. The quad is weird because I get all the start up tones except for the last 2 when I plug a battery in. If I plug USB into the computer and then plug a battery in, I get all of the start up tones. I can spin the motors in Betaflight, so they're wired correctly. They even spin the correct direction. I took the RSXR back off the quad and plugged it into the 5v 1.5a power supply and all of the lights come on like normal. Put it back on the quad and nothing. No lights, no signal to the radio or Betaflight. It's like it's not getting power.

Do you have a muliti-meter? Measure the 5v pad and see if it is actually outputting 5v.. Also, does the FC have a jumper pad for 3.3v or 5v? Make sure its set for 5v not 3.3v.. Also, make sure you have a good ground.. Did we get anywhere with that?

@@propsoff I tested the 5 volt pad for the receiver and got a reading of 0.80v. The LED's 5v pad read 0.82v. I am assuming the board is bad since it's getting no where near the correct voltage. I just did the Amazon return today and already they've processed the order for the replacement stack. Should be here Tuesday. My grounds seemed good. Good continuity from battery ground to all ground pads. and the ground on the receiver. I don't know what could cause the board to not get the 5v. A voltage regulator being bad maybe? I don't know enough about this stuff yet to know, but I do know I'm not getting proper voltage to the receiver or the VTX. Thanks for the advice.

@@propsoff I've heard others say Chinese quad electronics have a huge failure rate. I've ordered 2 flight controllers and tried to install them and neither have worked. not very inspiring so far. The thought of just buying bind and fly quads crossed my mind several times today, but I know I'll have to repair them. This is just a very expensive learning process.

Would’ve been better if you showed how to load firmware as well as the FCC firmware onto the receiver before binding. Reason being, I can’t bind my Taranis X9D Plus transmitter to my R-XSR receiver until I update the firmware first.

Did you notice the date this was filmed? There was no need to update in most applications. This was made a week prior to the V2 disaster. I would consider creating a new video on this subject, however, I will not be purchasing any more Frsky gear. The firmware I have is for ACCST and not compatible with ACCESS. I no longer purchase or support Frsky. The files were downloaded directly from Frsky's website.

Your welcome, I wish I could be more help.. I can't begin to describe how frustrated I am with Frsky. The ACCST (pre-2Vxx) is all but a line item in a hidden file on their website. I was one of the very first RU-vid's to point this out. I knew that Frsky was making new products and I also knew the problems for backwards compatibility was coming; However, I didn't see them completely shutting out all of us that spent hard earned money for so many years...

Your internal module and the external module (receiver rxsr) has to be running the same firmware. I refused to flash my internal module due to having 20+ quads on that radio (my Qx7). I cannot update all my receivers and re-bind and some receivers can't be upgraded at all.. I'm done with Frsky. I purchused the RadiomasterTX16S and new receivers for it are $8.00us, and they are as small as the crossfire nano.. If the internal module is flashed with the wrong firmware, you can change it back. You need the SD card's content to match as well. I do everything through Opentx Companion.

Will I have to do any of that to bind this reciever to frsky x-lite pro?

Don't quote me on this, I don't own it. The Pro version came out with ACCESS preinstalled. The new R-xsr receivers are flashed the same. Therefore, you should be good.

@@godsun358 I appreciate you, welcome to the PropsOff family! Also, after some quick reading, looks like your radio can communicate with ACCESS and ACCST protocols. If that's true, that's pretty cool.. My QX7 can not do that, so aggravating - Either/OR for it.. Enjoy the Breeze...👍🏻🍻👊🏻

I bind...it then shows solid green red blue...no flashing...but when i unplug it goes back to unbound blue light and flashing red...any ideas?

Firmware of the Rxsr and Radio are different..

Hello, I flashed my R-XSR to and now my controller isn't binding. What should I do? My stick inputs didn't show up on betaflight before or after flashing and now it doesn't bind anymore. Please Help.

PropsOff sure. i have a mamba f405 mk2 and a taranis qx7. the wiring is correct and my receiver is showing a solid green light. i have flashed it already.

Awesome vide Dude..!!😎wondering if you could help me..?I'v got a rx4r receiver LBT..i'v bound it to my Qx7,solid green👍But no solid blue..i'm using a cl racing f4.. i cant get any stick movment in betaflight..😥plus i,v held the boot button down to move it to the correct input🤔..One last question,Could i use a R-XSR in my 5" Quad and have a good distance?any advice would be most appreciated.🙏 Sub'D👌

Hi, I am newer in this quad field, question. Is it truth that you can not repeat the binding procedure after failing the first attempt? I tried several times with Frsky XRs.

You can repeat the binding process multiple times. Not sure why you would have to do that. The receiver (r-xsr) and the radio (in this case -qx7) has to be on the same firmware. They have to match up or no work... Let me add to this.. Frsky had done some naughty stuff and made things really confusing for newer people. There's 3 different Frsky software that was in play and it made old users mad, intermediate users frustrated, and new users loose interest in the hobby due to confusion. Worst yet, companies were selling the stuff and obviously had little understanding. I did this video when I noticed the crap was hitting the fan with Frsky and I have completely gotten away from the brand. That said, I am totally willing to help you out, I just ask you research the 3 differences: Frsky ACCST D16 Frsky V2.0 Frsky ACCESS These are not backward compatible and they dont work with one another...

The sticker that came on the package of your r-xsr, what version does it say? Also your qx7, is it ACCESS or is it ACCST?

I can't do the voice . You gotta be hunched over while doing this . Monotone and you keep saying alright over and over . I'm sure the simple info I'm after is here . But I just can't handle the voice .
