When the prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were martyred, there was a vacuum within Leadership at the top. You have heard stories of the Transfiguration of Young in to Smith. You've heard that Young was given all the Priesthood Keys. But do you really know the story?
Today we delve into the process by which Apostles led by Brigham Young became the ruling body in the LDS Church. The different leadership bodies, who had a higher authority and stewardship, what happened at Joseph Smith’s death, who he had appointed as his successor, and how the Quorum of the twelve removed every other possible contender to take leadership upon Joseph’s death.
As always feedback is much appreciated. Visit us at MormonDiscussionPodcast.org or RadioFreeMormon.org

This is fascinating. I always had uncomfortable feelings about Brigham Young and this confirms those concerns and fears. The death of Samuel Smith, my first cousin, several times removed, was recorded as being “questionable” in the journals of some of my ancestors. The intrigues in the Church leadership rivals those of the papacy, of the federal government and other powerful corporations. That is extremely disconcerting and faith diminishing!

Eldred G. Smith, was Set Aside and Not Under any of the GA's . And truthfully no Apostles or anyone could overide that position. I about pissed my pants when they did away with the Office. I got my Blessing in 75, wow was that along time ago. The Sealing Keys, all of them, were inherant in the office.

Interesting you use the term "President" of the church, was Brighams aspired position. There is historic evidence that before Joseph's death, there was written record that Joseph ASKED, BEFORE A GENERAL CONFERENCE, KNOWING MANY SAINTS DID NOT HAVE A POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM, HE ASKED IF THE SAINTS WANTED A NEW President for the church and stating, he/Joseph would hold the position of PROPHET. Brigham and his coups associates, said Joseph could remain president. Joseph saw the two positions as separate, wherein a prophet was designated by God and the President could be determined by the saints. Brigham took so much unrighteousness upon himself as to not only reconstruct the presidency (after Joseph died) but eventually to take upon himself the role of prophet, and thereafter to give the 12/15 the positions of prophets, seers and REVELATORS... when none then and none now have been called of God.

I always wondered why one of Joseph Smith’s sons wasn’t named. It does seem that other possible candidates to take over the leadership as prophet started to die off from suspected poisoning.

LOL! Dr. Bernhisel was married off to my 5X G Grandmother. Before that he lived in the Mansion House with the Smiths and was a bachelor into his 40’s and had delivered some of Emma’s babies. He was dealing with church finances s/p death of Hyrum and Joseph. He was friendly with both Brigham and Emma. Josiah Stout was married to a cousin; Joseph Knights daughter

This marriage of GG Grandmother was performed by Brigham Young in Nauvoo. The Doctor was pivitol to the founding of Utah and his funeral was attended by (going by memory here) three different presidents fo the church. By that time he was down to one wife, Elizabeth. There was one child from that union who was born in Winters Quarters

27:30 You are incorrect. Succession to the US Presidency in the event of the President and VP untimely removal is the Speaker of the House. The President Pro Tempore of the Senate is 3rd in line followed by the Executive branch Secretaries based on the date of creation of their respective departments

It is imperative for everyone to recognise that to be PRESIDENT of the church, DOES NOT MEAN HE WOULD BE THE PROPHET OF THE church. President is an administrative responsibility for the church. To be PROPHET is NOT RELATED IN ANY WAY AS A CALLING save it be a calling FROM GOD. Just as Joseph was called of God, SAW CHRIST, and was given authority and keys to be a prophet FOR THE CHURCH... Anyone of us can be a prophet or prophetess, BUT NOT FOR THE CHURCH.

As a Catholic I always get a kick out of how Mormons and ex-mos mispronounce “Apostolic” - they say Ap(aw)stolic. Like they have to think through going from the noun “apostle” to the adjectival form for apostolic, whereas English-speaking Catholics and Orthodox say it more naturally because their forefathers didn’t literally make it up in the mid-19th century

I was listening until you called Emma “Joseph’s first wife”. She was his one and only wife. However, most other things you talk about seem accurate. You should complete your research on Joseph first to truly understand what Brigham did to us.

The trouble with people who don’t believe Joseph Smith practiced polygamy is that they treat those who do as if they haven’t done the research. I’m simply going to tell you that having done my research and being thorough in such I deeply believe with certainty that Joseph Smith was a polygamist
@prezp00nage24
@prezp00nage24 Год назад
@@MormonDiscussion It's fair to have your own opinion. The evidence for both sides is inconclusive and it's really mostly about who you believe. Even in Joseph's day there were two distinct groups on the opposing viewpoints. I find the contemporaries with Joseph on the monogamy side more trustworthy, and I feel that Joseph's own personal statements line up with that story. Regardless, you've put a lot of work into your research for these videos, I don't want to discredit your work as I feel like you have a lot of good content here. I personally feel that God would never command man to practice polygamy, and I believe in the BoM, specifically Jacob 2, and I believe that God is the same today, yesterday, and forever. So I would throw out the bath water with the baby would I be persuaded on the issue. The problem is that the evidence that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God is overwhelming, where the evidence for Brigham being a prophet, or fulfilling his calling if he really was called to be a prophet, is directly in contrast. I believe God knew all of this would happen and is patiently waiting for us as members of His restored church to correct the mistakes of man and truly embrace God's will. We are currently led by great and inspired men, but the kingdom of Zion will not be established until all things are rectified before the coming of Christ.

@@prezp00nage24 Emma wasn't his only, nor was she the first sealed to Joseph. She was the 23rd wife sealed to him and it was unbeknownst to her how many other "wives" Joseph sealed to him before her. Sometimes i miss the culture of our LDS faith, but i find peace knowing that I'm where The Lord wants me now.
@prezp00nage24
@prezp00nage24 Год назад
@@Kacaaaw Seriously, out of all the LDS leaders, people have picked the wrong person to have problems with. At risk of being labelled a madman because of what you said I feel like I need to lay everything out here that I’ve been able to learn by doing honest research. If you miss the culture it would be worth your time to do the research now that the Joseph Smith papers are out and the internet has had some time to digest them. It takes a lot of work to get through all the garbage but people have began to realize that Joseph Smith was not a polygamist, a racist, or a powerhungry person at all. He preached and practiced the exact opposite of those things and it is incredibly obvious in his personal writings and actions throughout his entire life. Unfortunately, Brigham Young (and James Strang and almost every other breakaway sect leader) were all of those things and Brigham and associates spent YEARS editing the church history to make it look like Joseph started those things so Brigham and a few others could have money, power, and as many wives as they pleased. You may remember Joseph saying he knew there were those in the twelve conspiring against him. That’s why the church went so into disarray once Brigham and others began to assert their authority. This is going to sound crazy the first time you hear it but it’s the honest truth and it makes everything else make so much more sense, the Lord allowed the church to fall away because Joseph and Hiram were not randomly killed by a mob, they were betrayed and assassinated by those close to them in classic Judas fashion. If a crime scene detective were to analyze the murder of Joseph amd Hyrum Smith today, they would find that John Taylor and Willard Richards pulled the trigger on both of them. Those two then gained significant power in the church under Brigham, and were two of the very people who were with Brigham when he stated in his journal repeatedly that were editing the church history. The truth of polygamy is that Brigham Young learned about it after his first wife died young from a group of people he went on a mission to called the Cochranites. After Brigham remarried his second non-plural wife, one of the women he knew and had relations with in the Cochranite community several years prior became his first plural wife. He became obsessed and power hungry and took it as far as he absolutely could. Read D&C section 126 again with this context and you’ll realize Joseph knew what was going on. Brigham went on to fabricate 90% of section 132 and use the “Joseph practiced polygamy, I’m just a humble servant” thing until the end of his life when he wrote in his journal that he had “not once at any point in time recieved any revelation or heard the voice of the Lord” and that he “envied Joseph”. Brigham Young, the second leader of the LDS churche, was unfortunately self-proclaimed not a prophet of God. He assumed his power by force and it took a LONG time to revert his false teachings such as banning black people from the priesthood and Adam-God theory. Likewise to these things, the evidence for the Book of Mormon is astounding. The house of Lehi (Beit Lehi) has undoubtedly been discovered south of Jerusalem, and the Nephite people were the Hopewell Mound Builders of North America. Another misleading idea proliferating in the church is that the Book of Mormon HAD to have occurred in Mesoamerica. This is another post-Joseph Smith assertion that is incredibly wrong and has led many people astray. Joseph Smith personally identified the mound builders as the Nephites, and we know that the hill Cumorah was in upstate New York. All of this fits in with the Mound Builders’ archealogical record who mysteriously appeared near the mouth of the Mississippi river in 600 BC, built cities and forts and smelted metal swords and armor, progressively moved northward for the next 1000 years until they mysteriously vanished in the New England area in 400 AD. The local natives of the area held tradition that a long war was waged against the mound builder people until they were finally all killed off near the Susquehanna river. These things don’t just sort of match the Book of Mormon, they literally retell the story perfectly in the archeological record. I wish everyone would take another look and renewed interest in doing their research and not just listening to whatever the biggest person on the left or right of the arguement tells them to believe because they are both wrong. That’s why so much conflict and doubt has been stirred up in the LDS faith ovet all these years, but yet the Book of Mormon has not left the beliefs of earth and people keep feeling the spirit of the Lord when they read it. The things that make people fall away from the faith are the problems mankind has created.
