So grateful for this one. I distinctly remember when Hinkley read this. This "proclamation" affected my decisions for the next 25 years of my life. I'm sick to know the truth. Left during 2020. Glad my life decisions are now my own.

Someone shared this podcast with me when it came out. At the time, I was TBM who thought the church needed to be more friendly to LGBTQ+. This prompted me to read D&C 132 - really read it - for the first time, and the rabbit hole was opened. What a great exposé! This led to dozens of RFM sand Mormon Discussion videos, then Mormon Stories and Mormon Expressions. Thank you for helping shepherd me out of my magical thinking and special pleadings!

Lol. I divorced my “temple sealed” husband in July of 1996. I threw the church doctrine out the window.

This has been on my mind so much lately. I was 15 in 94 and Lt Cammermeyer (who had been on the news a lot in opposition to Don't Ask Don't Tell) came to speak at my high school about her career in the military...not about being a lesbian. Some of my ward members came to the school to protest. I was so embarrassed and disappointed and ashamed by their behavior. This was in May right before Benson died. Hunter died the following March and Hinkley was called as prophet/president of the church. When this was presented to the church it was very much emphasized as pro family, but the way Hinkley spoke in speeches he used the family proclamation in was so vile about homosexuality I felt all those feelings all over again. And still, I stayed in the church for another 15 years. Lately I keep thinking about it and can't help wishing I'd followed my intuition when I was 15/16 years old and left the church behind back then. It's ironic that all the things I've been associated with in my life that "wrack my soul" are from my time in the church. 🥺

Yes! I thought that this so called "Proclamation of the Family", was nothing more than a legal brief for the political issue of the LBGTQ movement...

It's worth reading Howard W. Hunter's talks from his last general conference. He pretty much hit all the main points of the proclamation before it existed. Either it was already in the works, or the Q15 later copied and pasted Hunter's teachings. Nothing new was revealed. Same with Joseph F. Smith's vision of the spirit world, all of which he had already taught publicly earlier in his life.

Absolutely fascinating. I've known a lot of people who have left the church after getting into callings where the "curtain is pulled back" and they see how "revelation" and leadership decisions are actually carried out. Thanks for putting this together.

Am I the only one who thinks that the practice of the "apostles" waiting and bidding their time to become president and then striking their changes, comes across as Sith Lords?

Where did we get the idea that one must have standing in order to file an amicus brief? Anyone can file an amicus brief (as long as you involve an individual who has passed the bar). Which source says the HI courts rejected their amicus brief?

Thank you for this. The Proclamation has always read like the product of a committee of lawyers, even more so than the Official Declarations. It was interesting that the members were instructed to hang it "by the door." In most Mormon homes I've visited it is hung next to a portrait of Christ, wherever that may be in the house -- usually the living room. My guess is that Oaks will move to add The Proclamation to the D&C behind the Official Declarations as soon as he inherits the throne.

Can Oaks retroactively declare the Proclamation as doctrine? He just might do it.

TSCC must have been considering Section 101 of the 1835 edition of The Doctrine and Covenants regarding denial of polygamy to justify historical proof of one man-one woman marriage while secretly engaging in the opposite at that time and for the next 40 + years !

The hypocracy of an organization who practiced a deviant form of marriage(polygamy) to then attack a different deviant form of marriage (same sex marriage) is just absolutely amazingly full of hubris and self righteous absurdity

I think some times people forget that the LDS Church is actually a CHURCH!! If your waiting for the leaders to Celebrate Homosexuality and March in the gay pride parade, don’t hold your breath.
