Today “Radio Free Mormon” continues with its newest episode “Make Way For Milk Strippings”. This episode delves into the apostasy and separation of Thomas Marsh from the Church. The story we have been told is that Marsh stuck up for and defended his wife over her feeling that a verbal agreement with a neighbor over milk and strippings was broken and she desired to be found justified in her disagreement. This episode delves into the deeper history and the more complicated but also historically accurate reasons for Marsh’s separation from the Church.
While Marsh was dealing with multiple reasons for a loss of faith we also discover new connections behind this story. Namely what Marsh and his wife Elizabeth did not know was that this neighbor, Lucinda Harris, in dispute with Elizabeth over the milk and strippings is the a plural wife of the Prophet Joseph Smith and enters a relationship with Joseph earlier that same year, 1838, unknown to almost anyone. So when she and Thomas appeal to the first presidency they realize just how little Brother Joseph wants to side against Lucinda or put her name into the public conversation.

I feel so bad for Thomas B. Marsh -- he almost escaped. He left the cult, but the cult didn't leave him.

Wow. It just keeps getting better and better. But so not shocking anymore. I now understand why my narcissistic Ex-husband felt so comfortable joining the church. He fit right in. I can consistently count on you for clarity. Thank You!! (Buzzards on a gut wagon… )🤣🤣🤣

Reminds me of Ezra Booth, early convert and close wingman of Joseph Smith in Ohio, after months of observation, travel to MO, listening to, conversations with, praying with, and close-up side by side living to "build Zion" , Booth wakes up and realizes Joseph Smith is a skilled, manipulative conman/fraud--and Booth details all of that in 9 published letters full of his reasons, conclusions, etc-warning others, lamenting he fell for the con and brought others into it too. It is a blow to the early MLM launched by Smith & Co. Jump to the 1850s, Brighamite leaders out in Utah begin to rewrite and whitewash the history of early days describe Ezra Booth's leaving because "he wanted to get paid to serve the church"......jump to the 1970s, a Mormon "academic" publishes a paper that states in the introduction that Ezra Booth left because he was jealous that he couldn't perform miracles like Joseph Smith.

This story also teaches us that only big strong men like Asshole Young and "I'm as Near to God As IT Gets Joseph Smith" to solve problems stirred up by women. P.s. I said, "Gross!" out loud when you read that Brigham Young. My heart really goes out to Thomas Marsh. In Dan Vogel's new book "Charisma Under Pressure," Thomas shows up as a decent human being while Joseph is having yet another God delusion. It's so 😢 sad.

My question is, why in the world did Thomas Marsh want to rejoin the church?
@nickdipaolofan5948

Probably it was his community, same reason why it is so hard for many members to leave today. I no longer believe after learning the church history but my wife still wants to go because all of our friends are in the church.

Broken down, destitute, poor health, alone. Probably longed for a community that Mormonism once gave him. I myself don't miss a damn thing about being a Mormon---except one. I once belonged to a community that spanned the world. I could go anywhere in the world, whether I knew the language or not, and instantly be welcomed and know exactly what was going on in any LDS congregation. That's a powerful thing to give up.

Wow, Brigham's comments about getting any woman he wants because being in the church has kept him looking great... Brad Wilcox's more recent comments come to mind. It's amazing had bad ideas can linger and fester in a dogmatic religion when all truth and knowledge come from one source and you are commanded to emulate and never disparage that source.

What did Wilcox say? About the “countenance” of believers? (That glowing countenance isn’t that hard to fake. I do it at work all day.)

Who passed “the keys” and ordained Brigham Young? Where did he get his authority to speak for god?

Speculation for the fun of it: My guess is that milk strippings was cover for something more serious, such as something in the realm of adultery or adulterous propositions that were rebuffed or found out about. That is why Marsh would have been overjoyed to be forgiven by G.W. for the indiscretion that got him disfellowshipped involving G.W.'s wife. Marsh was upset about being kicked out and then decided he played for the other team now, and swore out the affidavit. It also, for me in my own imagination, might be why Brigham Young went off about his appearance and virality. Maybe that topic just surrounded Marsh, for those who were in the know.

I'm a Nemo but have a broad interest in religious hooey of all sorts (all of it is fake as tits on a pumpkin) but especially the weirder stuff like Mormonism, Scientology and Xtian Fundamentalism (Dangerous AF) and having been born in Omaha, directly on the Mormon Trail led me to further research on your tribe. When I was in my early twenties I read the story of the 27th wife of Brigham Young. Was it Ann Eliza Smith? Her work is online and free because of the copyright expiration. Got caught up in the hoohah again when I read the NYTimes piece on Hans Mattson. Was flabbergasted the church had somehow managed to keep the history of polygamy away from the Swedes. Kinda feel bad for the Swedes since the info is more or less common knowledge here in the US. Says a lot about the wallbuilding and mind control though. Good podcast. Suggest you tell this story to Derrick on Mythvision. #honestMessiah

Can we just admit this is a BS story? 2 women gave eachother their milk because neither had enough to make cheese, so they switched because that would mean they have more milk.....this logic is beyond stupid. Without evidence, theres no reason to believe this.
