Mormonism has the power to disappoint in many ways, even after I thought I had left it far behind.
One of the most significant disappointments for me is being betrayed by church leaders I trusted implicitly, only to find they were not telling me the truth.
What happens when you find out your ability to discern the truth is compromised?
That is the underlying message of this podcast!

This is a very profound episode. I'd love to hear a Part 2, perhaps discussing how the testimony of three witnesses doesn't make the Book of Mormon true, and comparing that to Joseph's denials of polygamy, including an affidavit signed by several women including some of his wives.

I had a similar disillusionment experience on my mission when my trainer got together with another missionary that he thought was so much fun and they started comparing stories about casting out demons. I took the first couple of stories at face value but as the stories started getting more and more exciting, I started to think that the stories sounded unbelievable (especially since I had never seen anything to suggest that demonic possession was a reality). That's kind of a dramatic moment when it really hit me that people could lie about having spiritual experiences.

I grew up in Mormonville listening to Mormon "miracle" yarns, The overriding point of all these absurd yarns is not that the Mormon Church is true. Yes, that is one of the points. But the overriding point is how very spiritual and wonderful the speaker is. It's a contest. What's strange is how these "spiritual giants" almost break down in tears and sometimes actually do while telling absurd whoppers. I know with every fiber of my being that....

Thank you for this episode RFM. Just as important (if not more important) than the specifics of what happened is the effect that the discovery has on us

RFM, the difference is you can spark without the continuous motivation to say anything to promote the church even if it is lies...
