okay but the chapter Childish Kisses where Daniel is just pouring his heart out?? Physically hurt me, completely wasn't ready, got called out and got my heart ripped OUT. I love this book so much it's so wholesome and broke me apart. I would completely recommend this book for everybody around the ages of 16-20 just by the college/future aspect alone. The friendships were so wholesome that it made me feel lonely lmao
@kazuo9005
@kazuo9005 5 лет назад
Yes I never really see people talking about Daniel!! At the beginning I didn’t really care about him but he had such great character development, which I wish was developed even further because Childish Kisses is pretty much the only time we learn that much about him. I really grew to love him but I would have loved him even more if he got more pages and development
@skyhunterloveu
@skyhunterloveu 5 лет назад
@@kazuo9005 exactly!! I thought we wouldn't see much of Daniel and he would remain as "that character the protagonist doesn't like but is a minor character" but I was happily surprised and I'm very happy she gave him character development. I wish we had more of him too tbh and I wish we knew more about him, how he felt about his ethnicity (like how Frances and him were drunk talking about it), his relationship with Aled, and his future goals in general.
@kazuo9005
@kazuo9005 5 лет назад
MikaylaMockingjay same, it sounds a bit contradictory to say he had great character development but at the same time want a lot more of it, but that’s exactly what I feel so lol
@skyhunterloveu
@skyhunterloveu 5 лет назад
@@kazuo9005 no I get it lmao I feel the same way. Like I completely understand that the author didn't want to flood the book with too much romance, especially because it's separate from Frances, but I would read all about them and especially about Daniel because they are so interesting and the way they work together.
@cupohjo9678

omg I started crying at Childish Kisses and hours after finishing the book i’ve gone back and rereading that chapter so many times because I found it so raw and so powerful. Daniel IS my favorite character and I loved his development, it felt so subtle and earned that by the time I reached that chapter as he broke down in Oxford I believed every word I was reading. The moment felt so real and has left me absolutely devastated, it’s comforting to know i’m not alone

One thing that I loved about this book that it was set in England. It's been so long since I've actually read any UKYA and it's so refreshing that I actually get the references the author is talking about (unlike some stuff in American books). Just seeing the characters talk about going to Spoons and doing their A-Levels and UCAS forms like! biiiitch!!
@kazuo9005
@kazuo9005 5 лет назад
Same I really loved that too?? Like it’s such a weird thing to enjoy about a book but whenever a book mentions GCSEs/A-Levels/UK school things frequently I automatically like it more because it’s something I have knowledge of and so I can relate to it more
@agnetebutk
@agnetebutk 6 лет назад
An important part of the book (in my opinion), that you didn't give much emphasis is that a lot of a book is them trying to figure out what they wanna be and university they want to go to and their masters and stuff, but it's also like a discussion as Frances doesn't really feel like wanting to go to university anymore and she's trying to figure out what he wants, since Oxford was her goal from day one.

I literally just finished this book approximately 30 minutes ago, and honestly, this book is by far, the most relatable book I've read. I could relate to Frances about her getting excellent grades, being studious, not having friends where she could truly be herself and having a secret hobby; and the decision she makes by the end of the book--perfectly encapsulates the very situation I'm going through at the moment, and feels so natural and realistic, I tear up just thinking about it. Frances and Aled's relationship is so wholesome and heartwarming, my heart melts everytime. Now, I'm off to read the webcomic made by the author herself (It's called Heartstopper, and I never realized you could read it for free when I had plans to buy the physical copy online, but I'll still buy it in the near future :D) I and everyone else agree that Carol needs to taught a lesson, rEAL BAD.

I watched this when it came out but also 8 months later I’m living Frances’ (/Francis’?) academic arc: after getting rejected from oxford this year & taking a year out to reapply I’m starting to question whether I even wanted to pursue the subject I originally applied for and now I’m veering toward art Apologies that this was unrelated to the actual review lmao

Frances is based on Alice's own uni experiences, she did English lit at a top English uni but then regretted it because she hated it but now she loves art and does it a lot with her webcomic and stuff so Frances is like what she could have done instead or maybe should have done

I finished the book yesterday and it was really good! I read it in like five days (which is quickly for me), after it took nearly a week to arrive to the library. When I got to the part where Aled says he's demisexual I almost screamed because I've never read a book with ace rep before! Radio Silence has just amazing representation and such lovely characters! (Also, just pointing this out but you said Adel instead of Aled at the end lol)
@stargazer209
@stargazer209 6 лет назад
My major problem with this book is the asexual representation. To me it felt like a complete cop out. Like I understand that asexual people can feel sexually attracted to people and still be asexual, but because there is so little asexual representation already in media it felt like the author just threw it in for fun. In no way did the author show what it’s like to be asexual and the problems people go through being asexual.
@phix27
@phix27 6 лет назад
Okay but Aled isn’t asexual, he’s demisexual. And though that’s under the ace umbrella, it’s still an identity all on it’s own. It’s an identity that doesn’t get represented in basically any media, even less than asexuality. By labeling him as she did, Oseman clears up confusion about him and his sexuality. I think you misunderstand what demisexuality is.
@phix27
@phix27 6 лет назад
Casey Aonso I meant that Oseman wasn’t slating asexuals because Aled specifically on page says “I’m demisexual.” Which, although similar, is not the same identity. I appreciated the distinction because I’m demisexual as well, so the line meant a lot to me. But him saying that is not a slam on the asexual community because he’s still in the spectrum, if that makes sense.
@stargazer209
@stargazer209 6 лет назад
Heather Sorry! I used asexual instead of ace because I thought most people wouldn’t understand what ace means and I couldn’t remember if Aled ever officially says he demi. I agree that demisexuality is severely under represented which is why I feel it would’ve been better if the book allowed it to be a bigger part of the storyline instead of a passing line or two.
@mallaidhdevlin4512
@mallaidhdevlin4512 5 лет назад
Hi everyone! I know I'm late to this conversation, just wanted to chime in with a little representation info - Alice Oseman herself identifies as asexual (somewhere on the ace spectrum anyway, I don't want to label her) so you can be assured Aled's identity isn't just a "token ace character" thing. Aaaalso, the main character of her next book (no title yet, currently known online simply as "book four") id's as asexual. Her name is Georgia. she is also the narrator of the book. And from what I know, her sexuality will be a main theme. So keep an eye out for that. (If you want more info, I recommend going to Alice's tumblr: chronicintrovert.tumblr.com)

Old comment and I am sorry but I can kinda see it as like we aren’t seeing this book from his POV we are seeing it from Frances’ pov and that’s probably a reason why there isn’t such a big storyline or it seems kinda just tossed in I think idk lmao 😭
