Algae grows because of the light that comes through the PVC tube. Cover the tube with an Aircon ducting tube. They are light, inexpensive and easy to install. It prevents light from coming through and reduces algae growth. When you need to inspect the water level, just remove the ducting. Works like a charm.

How about a wine cork for a float?

Might enable growth of algae.

When you crimped the pipe it's supposed to be a back and forth motion so it actually cuts or you might crack a pipe it's like taking a straight blade and pressing straight down with enough pressure it will cut the pipe but will also warp it now imagine a back and forth motion

Why not just a float on a thin rigid rod?... with the top of the rod protruding through the top of the barrel...and a flag or some such on the top of the rod. The rod would need some sort of rigid guide to keep it vertical. There would be no algae concerns. And the barrel's level could be known at a glance from a distance. That said, thankyou for the video.

Where did you get the clear pvc? I’m looking at building one of these for my rain barrels. I figure I can use pipe insulation to cover and stop algae growth.
