OMG Manowar! I graduated with Joey DeMaio, class of 72 Auburn High School. Eric Adams (Louie Marillo) was a couple of years older but I remember him singing in the choir at St. Mary's Church in Auburn, NY. Unfortunately were bigger outside of USA than here. Still see Joey every once in awhile in Auburn walking at the nature trail at the local community college. Glad to see some local guys make the big time.

I met the band back in 1983 in a small rock disco in the east end. i was invited there by the designer at Kerrang magazin Steve 'Krusher' Jewel. I ghout there'd be hundreds there, but the place was literally empty. They joined us at a table and we chatted for an hour or so. All I remember is how quite they were, softly spoken and polite. That'#s all I remember, although Joey talked the most and seemed most earnest. Great band. Ajll I can say is I think they did 'mean it' but there was a glint in their eyes.

I remember as a shy teenager buying the Manowar Anthology CD which has an even dodgier cover than Into Glory Ride, the girl at the counter openly laughed when she saw it and all I could offer was a timid "Yeah well the music's good!". The panel pretty much chose all my favourites... 5: Warriors of the World - A welcome return after a 6 year gap, needed this in 2002! 4: Sign of the Hammer - Mountains is a stand out track for me, one of their best and Adam's performance really stands out as one of his most emotional. 3: Hail to England - First 3 tracks are outstanding and Bridge of Death is an incredible way to finish. 2: Battle Hymns - Totally agree about the almost 70s vibe in places, Fast Taker being a good example and underrated song. 1: Fighting the World - Killer all the way though, Carry On is one of their most uplifting and Black Wind, Fire and Steel is like the best punch in the face you'll ever have. HM - Triumph of Steel, Kings of Metal.

I recently went to the Bloodstock festival in the UK, and was shocked to see a band called Glory Hammer so high up on the bill, and they were loved, they also had an army of fans attending, and yet Manowar is looked upon as some kind of joke over here, it's baffling???
@madjock-hy7th
@madjock-hy7th 2 года назад
I think that it has something to do with Manowar seeming to take themselves too seriously. Many of the bands at Bloodstock which are power metal tend to play up the silliness which makes them more endearing. I have seen Manowar a couple of times here in the UK but they are very pricey (what they want to play Bloodstock would be far too much along with they like control of the bills below them kind of stops them being booked). There is no doubt they would go down well with a large part of the audience but it is highly unlikely!

Into Glory Ride 4. Sign of the HAmmer 5. Kings of Metal Hon mention - Fighting the World The live DVD The Day The Earth Shook -The Absolute power is great because it has Ross The Boss on Battle Hymn, showing how it should be played. When they toured the uk in early 84 Mercyful Fate were suposed to be the opener, however they left the tour after the first or second show so the band I was in went backstage after the gig at Bournemouth to ask if they didnt have a band lined up for the next show in Bristol could we please do it - we turned up with our gear in a transit van and low and behold no support act so they let us play - I was palying bass at the time and used our small pa on stage. Scott Columbus watched us as gave some great feedback - we also went to say thanks after we finished and they were cool guys - short of stature as I recall though. Personally Manowar stopped being the Manowar I loved when Ross the Boss was kicked out , after him the sound just wasnt ever the same - never liked David Shankle, far too widdly for my tastes at the time. I still bought their albums and those later ones Simon mentioned are pretty good but I didnt want to hear their take on Elvis and I got the impression that they were maybe trying to be a bit more like Rhapsody, who Joey DeMaio managed and allegedly caused them to nearly call it a day.

Pete this was one of the greatest videos you have done ✔. Love Stephen and Simon. Simon's deadpan humour is killer. Stephen's honest thoughts-killer entertainment. I think here in the UK only my opinion is Manowar burst on to the scene as wow wtf is this. Different, no doubt about their impact and the sort of band as you guys said we are Manowar and we do what we want. The music is good. Their problem was they never broke into the big arena type band a la Kiss. Maybe one of those bands on your bucket list see once enjoy etc. But the extortionate ticket prices and Stephen and Simon will vouch charging £60 or more to play a small venue may have been the reason plus over the top merchandise prices. Don't get me wrong not the only band to do this. They recently started going into GnR type behaviour and attitude cancelling shows turning up late or not at all because they had to headline etc and had to be their way. But wtf they made some great music 🎶and we have to wonder did they take themselves seriously. I think they did - excellent musicians. And Simon I am 30 miles down the road from you in Bolton lol.

They were featured in the first Kerrang I ever brought, I seem to remember had photos of them signing the record contract in their own blood, how metal is that. Hail To England was my best, also wasn't Sign of the Hammer released in the UK, on the label, 10 Records, and that was to reference of the song All Men play on 10

I can recall listening to Friday night Rock Show in UK with Tommy Vance back in 1982. He played Metal Daze which sounded great through my ghetto blaster. Went out to my record store and bought the album the following day. Brilliant album , has my favourite Manowar track "Fasttaker".

I think it's mostly Joey that takes it too seriously. The others seem relatively normal. Well, Karl Logan's legal problems aside. But let's not get into this. They were for a time pretty big in Germany. Also one of the 1st Bands I listened to. I've got all the Albums but the latest one. Not all of the EPs or whatever that is. Certainly never listened to any of the re-recordings of their older Albums. Don't see any reason to change that. So, just ranking the Albums I have: 10. Into Glory Ride: Never really warmed up to that one. Couldn't even tell you a favorite song off of it. 9. Warriors of the World: That seems to be a little unfinished. Kinda like they rushed its release. A lot of filler material on it. 8. Fighting the World: I like some of it, especially "Defender". But it's a bit commercial for my tastes. 7. Triumph of Steel: A buddy of mine called it their most progressive Album. That might be. I like most of it. That really long 1st track is somewhat tiresome, though. Also not big on "Demon's Whip" 6. Louder than Hell: That would most likely rank higher if it weren't for those two pesky instrumentals towards the end of the Album. Certainly above the next one. 5. Kings of Metal: I like it. Like FtW it's a bit radio friendly. But not as bad as this one. 4. Gods of War: I'm a fan of Norse Mythology. So this always kinda worked for me. Even if some call it an Audio Play. 3. Battle Hymns: It took me a while to warm up to it at first. That's basically why the other two that are left rank better. Might go up at some point in time. 2. Sign of the Hammer: That one I loved from the start. That too might have to do with my affinity for Norse Mythology. 1. Hail to England: And that one blew me away when I 1st got it.

Steven and Simon must be the best combo to take the co pilots seats. Loved every show you guys have done and this one was also absolutely so funny and on point (btw bought Into glory ride on release). .. Just going to throw this into the mix, but I would love to see you guys do the band DARE...

I don't think Joey was influenced by Twisted Sister on Sign of the Hammer. Actually, both bands were big rivals and they almost came to fistfights (according to Dee's biography). Things calmed down when Mark Mendoza had a talk with Ross the Boss, as both were in The Dictators. Up in Canada, all their albums up to Fighting the World were also imports, as Pete mentioned. I don't recall them touring Canada during that time period. We were also unaware about Manowar and the metal scene in NY at the time (cheesiness, etc.).

I've never sat through a Manowar album, so far. But i did go to see them in 1984 at the Glasgow Apollo. There was probably no more thsan 500 people in the venue, out of a 3500 capacity. Enjoyable night yet hilariious too.

My first album was Fighting the World, my second was Sign of the Hammer. So my top 4 is: Hail to England, Battle Hymns (original), although I have heard the reworking and it's more Manowar than the original, but Eric's vocals are not as high. Fighting the World, Sign of the Hammer( though this features Mountains the best Manowar song ever) . There's a tie for 5th place with 3 albums as I can't make up my mind. Into Glory Ride (Warlord and Hatred), Kings of Metal (Pleasure Slave. Warrior's Prayer, Bumblee), Triumph of Steel(Achilles drum solo). I've been relistening and my 5th is Warriors of the World , with the three now vying for 6th place.

My first Manowar album was Into Glory Ride. Remember buying it at The Record Bar. Thought it was fantastic and I loved, and still do , Warlord. Lol, different strokes for different folks I guess. Anyway, it's my #5 4 The Triumph of Steel 3. Louder Than Hell 2. Kings of Metal 1. Fighting The World

I was hooked with Fighting the World! Never heard of them before this album when I bought it in 90. Bought it because of the cover and the band name. Manowarrior ever since! This is my number one album as well. Because it is the one that began it all.

Mine too!I knew of Manowar back in the 80s.I had never heard of them until they were on Nickelodeon.i always liked them but for some reason or other,it took me 10 years to buy one of their albums.Probably because in the 80s and early to mid 90s,i didn't listen to very much metal.i was more in to stuff they would play on college radio;The Cure,The Smiths,Echo and the Bunnymen,etc and later in the early 90s I got in to stuff like Skinny Puppy,Nitzer Ebb and Frontline Assembly

I don't know why Shankle and Rhino only lasted for one album but I wonder if it was because they were TOO good and Joey wanted them confined to a certain style, especially the drums with Scott Columbus's simplistic style. There's a live video where Shankle does a classical guitar intro to a song and I wish they would have incorporated something like that into future songwriting. Shankle could shred as good as Karl Logan but I found Logan's playing to be clinical while Shankle's had more personality.

I agree that Rhino was a much better drummer than Scott (although still a very good drummer). The drumming on TofS is amazing. I read somewhere a while back that Rhino was considered a temporary replacement; Rhino and Scott were friends from what I can remember. As for Shankle, you're probably right that he may have been too good and this did not play well with Joey.

@@Canuck1000 - did some reading and just found out that after Logan was arrested Shankle posted on Facebook that he would like to rejoin the band ... AND that he had written an album sequel to Triumph of Steel that he was going to record with his band Feanor!! But Joey picks a guitarist from a tribute band instead and doesn't mention him anywhere on the Manowar website as being a band member! We could have had an album of fresh material instead of the tired drivel that Joey's been serving up but he has to be such a control freak...
