he bought wireless ones to fuck with her speech and he is playing this song from his phone. That is why she went directly into his office because he was clearly in the building before he blasted the music that undermined her and the company's message about the cruises debacle.
@@williammccormick2802 Netflix total audience in the entire world is 87 times bigger than HBOmax audience . Wrap your head around that for a second 87 times. Imagine how big this show could get on netflix
@@williammccormick2802 access is first. Then come the viewership. More than half the world, don't know what HBOmax is, and hence don't know what Succession is. But they do have Netflix. And visibility is everything.
This show has really mastered the art of "episodic" television, where every episode is a distinct, memorable chapter with a beginning middle and end. It's not like Netflix and other streaming shows where the individual episodes are just shapeless connective tissue for a binge session. Each chapter of this show is meant to be digested on its own terms, although I will admit the urge to binge is irresistible.
This scene is so disturbing, on one hand its obviously horrible that shiv volunteered to give this speech minimizing the assaults, but on the other hand kendall doesn't really care about the victims either, just about humiliating his sister for doing exactly what he would have done for his father last season.
They are all so awful to each other you can't help but feel they deserve every bad thing that happens to them (while also feeling bad for all the abuse from their father and from each other).
dawg i know right this was an intense episode thinking back on how many big moments happen all in one episode. Kendall walking down the hallway at the end was a heavy shot.
This episode basically broke the dam in my brain regulating my cortisone levels because I was genuinely on the edge of my couch and about to have an anxiety attack with every new scene. It's completely dialogue driven, no violence, or chase scenes, or murder etc, and it's more intense then half the shit we see in a real thriller/horror movie. Just BRUTAL! this season is insaneeeee. Then I'm wondering who to root for, and keep forgetting they are all basically terrible, but i still love them. it fucks me up.
You’re right. When I think of her character I actually think of the many faces she makes throughout all of her interactions. Particularly the difference between every other interaction she has and her dad.
I hope Sarah Snook gets an Emmy for this episode. She's been an incredible performance on the show since the beginning but her face when Rape Me really kicks in is just incredible. And how viciously she spits in Kendall's book lol. Like she was shooting venom it was that aggressive
I just saw her play an Australian (I’m an Aussie), and thought, “wait is she Australian or is she crushing our accent, props….” Wiki confirmed she was Australian… she’s awesome, taking a baton from Nicole Kidman…
@@malayjoshi1098 cant believe they didnt, but it also wasnt a fair contest. Better Call Saul is a tie in my mind because they weren't done with the show yet and "critics" were just so obsessed with Succession
I’m watching Succession with my brother, who’s 15, and THIS is what introduced him to Nirvana, lmfao. It’s Tuesday afternoon, and he’s been blasting their entire discography since Monday afternoon through the entire house. Thank you jesse armstrong
The Joy of hearing it for the first time. It was like when I was 14 and my uncle give me The Beatles White Album because I questioned their talent (remember I was 14)
This scene is so genius. The way Shiv fumbles nervously through the rest of her self-aggrandizing speech as if she desperately wants to get out of there the moment anything unscripted happens. She can barely pronounce the words written for her that she performed in front of the mirror so many times. The way Roman can barely contain his laughter because although he’s chosen his side he adores a proper trolling. Perfection. Plus the song choice. Amazing protest by Kendall. And the response by Shiv- equally as devastating, only to be undermined by the FBI raid, right as Kendall seemed to self-destruct AGAIN. Flawless television. I also love how the music came from the top of the building, which is where the low-level workers were standing. Shiv barely acknowledged them but called them “family” yet that’s not only where the music came from, but also the questions about Waystar that would offend Logan Roy.
I respectfully disagree, I think it was a stupid “protest” by Kendall despite the possible catharsis of it. What’s the upside? It’s not gonna help him with the DOJ, it’s not gonna help him with the media, and it makes him seem unhinged and impulsive. Despite the Nirvana song being written to call attention to abuse victims it could easily be spun into a misogynistic and personal attack on his own sister. Plus he ruined any future of gaining Shiv as an ally and partially contributed to her public personal attack on him later on in the episode. I love the scene but I think it really incapsulates how Kendall really is going nut nut, despite him being on the better side morally technically. This is the kind of thing that would be cool and I would support if it actually came from people/trolls/disgruntled employees. Coming from Kendall it’s all risk and very little upside. His lawyer didn’t want him to go to the office much less pull a stunt like this. Just my opinion though I’m not criticizing your enthusiasm for the scene. Edit: also I agree that the speech was bad and cheesy but it wasn’t as cringe as Kendall’s “lifeboats” scene in s1e3 lol. That was a long time ago though.
You guys are both correct. Within the context of the family squabble this was a home run from Kendall, but beyond that it doesn't represent much except him lashing out at his siblings for not supporting him.
@@BatmanHQYT I don't think it was a homerun in any sphere, because the repercussions for him from this were worse than the repercussions for shiv or Logan. He really blew any chance of shiv coming to his side, but didn't really harm her either. He just hurt her feelings to a point where she didn't give a fuck anymore and exposed him badly.
It's not exactly surprising. She's had a very successful career of scripting people, not actually being scripted. That being said her vengeance for the act was such a glorious kick in the teeth to Kendall that he clearly didn't think she would fire back at all, let alone with such awesome venom 😅
I appreciate how each child has a seperate trauma. For Shiv it's obviously being "daddy's little girl". She claims to be high and mighty bleeding heart liberal but when it comes down to it she will exploit her gender to throw rape victims under the bus all for being "the golden child"
She could've just stayed and continued her speech instead of just leaving the stage. Showing how she is incapable of the job and even how clueless she is in business world.
@@jwoodfill14 it’s so beautiful but can someone please describe how it’s possible? like this is melting my brain trying to figure out how they filmed this
people on twitter also pointed out the concept of “glass cliff”, “women are more likely than men to be promoted to leadership roles during periods of crisis or downturn, when the chance of failure is highest”. that fully applies to shiv and the shot visually corroborates w that
Every second of this scene is so perfect. What tops it all off for me, is the way her face contorts with rage before she spits in Kendall's book. For a moment we see the ugly emotions she has... and it is genius.
Her expression there reminded me a lot of Toni Collette's expression in the dinner scene of Hereditary. It's definitely a lot more common now than it used to be, but there's something about women on screen displaying that kind of genuinely ugly anger that I think will always make me a little bit oddly giddy
I'm surprised by how many people questioned if Kendall was behind this or disgruntled employees. He clearly sends out his lackey to buy the speakers and the empty boxes are in his office when Shiv walks in.
@@Radio20CB Kendall, in his office, to Remy: “I’m airdropping you a little shopping list. What time does the town hall start?” It’s very obviously Kendall.
@@justinhamilton8647 But then I didn't understand how Kendall and associates were being watched like hawks by security, how they had their wifi/computer access cut... that part didn't make sense to me.
That shot of the canopy of balconies overlooking the auditorium was really beautiful. And it helped underscore the total chaos that ensued. Sabotage that reverberates throughout multiple levels of the building's architecture.
The anti rape song everyone in the 90s thought was a rape song so never grasped its meaning. It only took a popular TV show to put the meaning on the nose for people yo appreciate Nirvanas most important political song. Classic America lmao
It’s both. It’s a anti rape song, for sure. The bridge is the part abt the media. When conbain sings “I’m not the only one”, he is talking abt how the media metaphorically rapes his wife and child as well as him.
This has nothing to do with her. This is about Kendall and Logan. The siblings did worse than ruining a presentation of one another; and they had reconciled after this. But getting the company means being Logan's favorite and Shiv cannot accept it isn't her.
This scene deserves millions of views. Fucking Kendall is a savage !! Classic song that everyone will know and the meaning of it hits so much harder especially in Waystar. I have no idea where this season is gonna take us but for sure one of the Roys has to fall by the end
Well it seriously backfired for him considering that everyone now knows that he has mentalhealth and addiction issues, while shiv came out of this pretty unscathed.
The meaning hit harder when Kurt wrote it, but people refused to understand it in the 90s. Only took an on the nose TV show scene for people to think it had meaning? Perfect example of our country lmao
@@Slowdough99 bruh what are you talking about? I already knew the meaning of the song, I’m saying it hits even harder in this scene since Cruises is being investigated and we know the joke of Mo-Lester. Fuck off mate
I honestly think that this might not have been Kendall, it’s could have been sabotage by Logan to undermine Shiv and put her against Kendall, Logan knows his children and especially how they react I’m sure he understood that shiv would become vindictive and lash out at Kendall, I’m sure next episode he will act furious at Shiv for the letter to remove himself from the move
I feel her pain , it was her first speech in a new role. She probably practise so many times and did not anticipate for such a disaster. You can see the panic in her body language.
This was the "Boar on the floor!" moment of season 3 for me. I could not BELIEVE..... what I was watching. Frankly I can't believe Shiv and Kendall reconciled after this.
It was a good scene but it wasn’t a genius play. He lost Shiv as an ally completely (she’s really the most important one for his cause) and partially led to her personal and brutal press release. It will cause a mixed media reaction-backlash from perceived misogyny of it, personally attacking family, etc. Kendall is on the better side in terms of morals right now but it simply wasn’t a strategic move. I realize that it may be cathartic and was a pretty cool troll but Kendall is in a huge crisis right now and just needs to be pragmatic.
@@sams7068 I get what you're saying, but she was never interested in joining him anyway. They've made it clear that she wants Logan's job and wouldn't accept working under Ken.
@@slam761 I’m sure that was part of Kendall’s calculation. I just think the upside was too low and there was a slim chance she would flip if Logan fucks her over again or things shake up in another. I don’t think think this move destroys Kendall, I just think it was unnecessary, he really just had to listen to his lawyer at this point lol (I know the point of the show is that he can’t though)
Really helps sell a very gross aspect of Kendall's character which is that deep down he is actually pretty misogynist. He expects the women in his life to fall in line when he needs them to without any obligation on his part, he cynically exploits the cruise victims to get back at his dad when even shiv interacts with them more directly than he does and any time shiv gets in his way suddenly she's just a little girl who needs to know her place. Amazing show
Also that part in the first season where he tells his people to tell everyone that the women who declined his seed offer were junkies and sluts. Kendell can be a real piece of shit.
I nearly cried watching this scene. What a horrible feeling being humiliated like that by her own brother. And after that Shiv's pay back also hit Kendall badly. Sibling fight is the worst.
The contrast between the beginning when she's kinda failing to hide pride when she says she's got the new position and then the anger when her speech is completely derailed ... chef's kiss
Her 'paralyzed with shock and fear' face is so fucking good. It's hard to rewatch this scene because it always feels like I'm the one up on a stage being (deservedly) humiliated. If there's anything that all four siblings have in common, it's painfully relatable patheticness
@@joshburns5236 if you think any of them actually care about the rapes you are not watching the show correctly lol. Kendall doesn’t care either it’s all about power
And then there's Roman (who always plays both sides, not smirking, but the glance over on his face....he's thinking no matter what, "This was a fucking genius idea, props 👏."
Succession does an amazing job showing how the extremely wealthy view everyday folk! Shiv was doing a speech trynna minimize the sexual assaults and Kendal really does not care about the victims at all he just uses em to get back at his family.
even to this day nirvana songs are still used in cinema and are still relevant. after the batman i just keep discovering new(you know what i mean) nirvana masterpiece used in modern day art! #ripkurtcobain
Coming back to this scene after the series ended, I have no idea how on Earth Kendall even managed to get back into Waystar's good graces when this stunt pissed of his dad the most.
Kendall does not care about the women Waystar hurt, not in a real way. He's using their pain and suffering for his own gain. It's all stunts and optics. Shiv spitting in his face would be most satisfying.
Out of the 4 siblings, Kendall is def the one that cares the most. You see it in S2, when everyone wants to do like nothing happened, Kendall is the only one that says it has to have consequences and that it's serious. But at the end of the day, all 4 don't care that much. As we would, if we were in their shoes
Kendall doing things like these; no wonder why she voted against his ass amongst so many other reasons. He did his family so dirty throughout the all 4 seasons and then expected them to kiss his ass.
