Riley: I want more POC in movies Also Riley: How dare a POC play a villain
@RanMouri82

Because the only way to know a race that's not white is good is to cast a person of that race as a hero in a fictional story.
@RenegadeVile
@RenegadeVile 4 года назад
Also note that A LOT of actors have always claimed that playing a well-written villain is more enjoyable, creative and gives them more opportunities to flex their acting muscles. So I would dare say a lot of non-white actors would also love to play villains. Who the hell wouldn't want to play Doctor Doom if they think they've got the role down?

Weird how Riley points out the white actor playing an Asian character in Death Note, but not the black actor who did the exact same thing for L. Hmmm

And didn't a lot of the Death Note fanbase call out that the casting seemed off, given how the Japanese upbringing informed Light's circumstance (as a genius student on top of his Social Ladder)? I actually had the displeasure of "debating" Riley on one of his streams. When he asked me if I get just as mad when they make a preexisting character of colour white, I said yes. Then I gave him an example, saying that as much as I love Liam Neeson, I was disappointed that they cast him as Ra's al Ghul, my favourite Batman villain of all time, in Batman Begins. For this reason, I found his depiction in the T.V. show Gotham much more enjoyable, as he's played by an actual Arab man, as he _should_ be. I also pointed out that Nat Wolff was cast as Light by Roy Lee, Dan Lin, and Masi Oka, all of whom are _Asian_ and _could have_ cast an Asian actor if they wanted to. He blocked me.

What I hate about Riley is that he acts like "people of color" have literally NO representation on the media and that white people are the ones who are ALWAYS represented on TV and movies That's not the fucking case here. Bollywood has almost NO white people in it because the vast majority of the population in India... are Indians. There are no white people in Korean telenovelas because it's predominantly Korean. Does Riley even understand that concept? White people don't complain about the lack of representation in Bollywood, manga, anime, and Korean shows because they know for a fact that whites are a minority in those countries. People like Riley are so fucking sheltered, it's not even funny. You can tell they've never stepped foot outside of America.

I don't even understand the Iron Fist thing. Danny Rand is a white guy and has for his entire existence, to my knowledge, BEEN a white guy. It's pretty much just like batman, but instead of Bruce intentionally doing globetrotting soul searching and learning ALL THE FIGHTING, from ALL THE CULTURES (no one shouting cultural appropriation there?) Danny WAS ORPHANED IN TIBET (Not even Tibet, FAKE MAGIC COMIC BOOK TIBET) and WAS RAISED IN THAT CULTURE. My Chinese art professor in college asked if we knew what an Egg and Banana were? We didn't really reply because a lot of the time he just goes off on tangents and his accent is pretty thick but he's still a boss art teacher. We thought he was talking about the paintings we were looking at, like some history lesson, and he goes "An Egg is a white person raised in [Asia] China, and a Banana is an Asian person raised in America[or Europe], Because their white on the outside but yellow on the inside, or yellow on the outside but really white on the inside." It was like a gut-punch because that comment came out of nowhere and I almost DIED LAUGHING. Danny Rand is an Egg. The character is an Egg. A 50+ year old Chinese man told me that term.

As a female "person of color", I don't give a crap of how many white people are in films and shows, and don't fail to connect with them due to their "whiteness". Also, I write and draw, and most (if not all) of my characters are white (and also male)- does that mean I have "internalized racism" and misogyny? Am I a brown-hating brown person? Nope! Also, being mixed race, I have a lotta white, too, but I don't hate myself for having white. It is what it is, and I'm proud of it. Gosh golly, it's almost like none of this actually affects me! Maybe, just maybe, people make characters however the way they want, and don't like being told how to make their characters! Wow, imagine that! Just because a movie character is white and I am white it doesn't mean I connect with that character. And just because a movie character is black and I am white it doesn't mean I can't connect with that character at all. It comes down to how they are written not their skin color. Also you know I don't really feel like any other white person in the world because we have white people from different countries with different cultures. And also if we talk about representation I go by my country and culture first. And I can say that I am not represented in Hollywood because actors from my country barely get jobs there and when they do they play either really minor role or a Russian.

Just realised a thing. Might be wrong but I wanna give my thought a shot: I feel like art is a reflection of how society is. Not the opposite. So like when black people started becoming more respected, blackface disappeared from TV shows and movies. Females started having better and more diversified roles when they were given more rights and became the same as males. Stuff like that, y'know? They didn't stop doing blackface to give respect to black people. But now these people kinda do the opposite. It feels like they THINK the change is to be done on TV first, so they think every character should be black, trans, queer, etc. Even though the fact there's more of those characters is mostly the fact that now they are more respected in society. They got it all backwards. Or almost, now it's shoved in our faces not as a reflection of society, but how they want society to be. Which is catering solely to them. Again, might be wrong, it's my opinion based on stuff I don't know much about.

I don't care about the character's race unless it's integral to the story or another character's arc. For example, Holly Short in Artemis Fowl is the very first female officer in the LEP Force, and faces a lot of hardship because of that fact, shaping her into the tough character she is. Julius Root, the male head of that organization, is at first very hard on her because of that fact, and that he knows she can be the best officer the Force has and stick it to the sexists. Over time, he becomes a father figure and mentor to her and it's devastating when he dies. In the movie version that's coming out soon, Root was cast as a woman, destroying a vital part of Holly's character and Root's as well. Holly no longer has that drive to become the best she can be and Root therefore has no reason to be hard on her because of that. Just maybe because of her "potential" or whatever. That's an example of bad movie making. That's what I don't want. Of course Riley would probably think that's a good thing but whatever. Edit: I just realized also in the Artemis Fowl movie that they made Butler black. Which normally I wouldn't have a problem with. But his family has been "serving the Fowls for years", sometimes without any pay, and he is going to serve and protect Artemis Fowl, with his life, until he dies, and in the third book he does just that. Congratulations Hollywood. You played yourself.

The photo of that random white guy was from the Death Note adaptation on Netflix. I guess Riley is saying that a Death Note adaptation set in AMERICA, would have Japanese family as the main characters? You could, but you also have to consider that actors are not robots or pairs of shoes. You can't interchange them so easy. Also, the same movie also has somebody who was white changed to a black guy. Both guys acted well and that is main function they serve

@papershadow
@papershadow 3 года назад
The irony of this is that Death Note, despite being a piece of shit, manages to break Riley's argument no matter which direction you take the discussion. - If it's a matter of the casting pool available, Hollywood has a largely White pool of actors in that age group that now requires acknowledging why, say, Bollywood primarily casts Indian actors. By law of averages, American works of film would have more people working on them who are white if one assumes all other factors like talent, literacy, and physical capability as necessary for roles are completely equal across all candidates. - If it's about racism amongst the producers, I believe a large amount of the staff with power over the casting were Asian or Asian-American, so is the suggestion in Riley's head that PoC specifically discriminated against hiring PoC for an adaption of a story where it would not disrupt the setting or consistency? This also considering that the Netflix adaption is set in Seattle, which has a proportionally larger Asian-American population (~14% vs the US at large being ~6%) - If it's about "visual" faithfulness to the source material, that argument is immediately thrown off by the move to the US setting in the first place, considering that Japanese vs International law was a significant factor in Death Note's Cat-and-Mouse conflict (meaning the race and setting change aren't just arbitrary). "Anime = White" discussion aside, Light and most of the cast were explicitly Japanese (i.e. native to the story setting) or foreigners raised in predominantly white-populated countries like England. - If it's about the character depictions being the important part (seeing an "unwanted" race over talent in the actor), this is put down by most of the performances, whether by actor or direction, simply not being effective at depicting either the Death Flix characters or representations of the Death Note archetypes: Light's a delinquent doormat, Mi(s)a's a manipulative dom trying to control everything, and L is overly emotional to the point of compromising his principles on Justice in the case. - If it's about pandering to or reaching an audience, Death Flix's casting was one of the only things anyone remembered about that project before or after it came out. The fanbase clearly wasn't pleased with the decision, likely in part for what I cited above about how it was among the many examples of changes that undermine the premise and idea of the original. So it's not like this was something that is perpetuated by appeasing an American-White audience, as they objected to the decision even before seeing the script was a piece of shit too.

Some (I say some because obviously not everyone in the LGBT community is butthurt about everything) LGBT people believe that there is no rep when in fact there has been several movies as well as shows that represent them. They show that they aren’t just gay or bi or transgender. They also have other things that tie into who they are as a person. Could there be a bit more rep? Well sure I can see that. If I may, I'm mostly white- most of my family is ethnically Jewish I'm ethnically Jewish And as a kid I didn't see a lot of Jewish characters You wanna talk about stereotypes for POC in media, Riley? Don't even try. Jews get stereotyped CONSTANTLY! You know what tho? I didn't care. I didn't need someone who looked like me or were my same ethnicity for me to relate to them. So yeah
@sunglassesgirl41

Ya I feel the same way. It is nice to see a Jewish character who’s not a complete stereotype, but if I don’t like the way a character is done, I don’t watch it lmao but it doesn’t take away from my confidence. Personality always mattered more to me anyway.

Also, in *Ghost in the Shell THE MANGA*, the main character looks like your typical manga character--in other words, she doesn't appear like she's of any particular race. She's just of the Japanese manga aesthetic. They could have made her any race, and I doubt that people from Japan were "offended" by the choice of using a popular White actress. That said, I haven't seen the "Scarlett Johansson" version of GITS, but I have seen the anime movie, and there weren't ANY Black folks in it. Also, Japanese tend to be of a lighter hue, like Caucasians, and, as I've said earlier, their aesthetic doesn't promote any particular racial characteristic. In fact, a lot of their manga/anime characters "look White." Knowing a little bit about Japanese pop-culture, it seems to me that a lot of Japanese are happily flattered that Americans are impressed and are growing a fan following of their films and comics and for this clown to be virtue-signaling about this particular title just proves that he's an ignorant troll.

My biggest problem with this whole narrative is that they only look at HOLLYWOOD. We know Hollywood is trash. We always complain about it. You want to see movies with POC leads, gay leads, or female leads? Or, GASP, all of the above? SUPPORT THE INDEPENDENT MOVEMENT. But nah, you wouldn't have anything to bitch about, would you? Its all about which films make the most money and not about the actual quality, huh Riley? Kiss my ass. Sincerely, from a current mentee in an independent studio.

Looking up the a character/idol isn’t about race. It’s about their characteristics. You look up to the bravery of Steve Rogers who throw himself into battle to save innocent people. You look up the the perseverance of Katniss Everdeen when her father dies and she keeps her sister and mother alive. You look up the the guardian in Heimdal, who protects the people of asguard when Hella comes to fuck some bitches up. You look up to Shuri, who turns Wakanda into a gigantic prosperous utopia with her dreams and imagination. If these idiots honestly think that POC need or even want actors who look like them to feel empowered, then that is infinitely more insulting than any racist joke or stereotype.

It turns out that one character everyone was bitching was supposed to be Asian in that movie a year or so ago, was actually supposed to be white according to the original creator, so if anything these SJWs were the ones being racist by assuming that simply because the character was from an Anime that she just HAD to be Asian.

Actually, from about 1998 right up until the elevator scene in Winter Soldier, I could easily say that Blade was my favorite Marvel superhero featured in a live action movie. The fact that he's black is and always has been completely incidental as far as I'm concerned. The fact that Captain America looks more like me than Blade doesn't inform my opinion of either character. Both characters appeal to me for a far more significant reason, they're fucking awesome.

As a director, I will cast whoever is best for the role. Sometimes that involves race (for example, I wouldn’t cast a white guy to play MLK or a black person to play Winston Churchill). But it all comes down to who is best.
