This was originally supposed to come out on Halloween, but I had to push it back cause life hates me. So enjoy my late-ass video! :) original videos: • Costume #FAILS • 12 Racist Halloween Co...
The asian girl was completely full of it. I've been living in mainland China off and on for the laat few years. I taught English to elementary age kids. They dressed up in traditional outfits like the "China boy" costume often. Also, it was fairly popular to cut the boys hair in traditional styles; while not usually a long braid, but similar traditional styles. Oh, and the now not PC "China man" and "China boy" are simply direct translation from Chinese. Ex: 中国=China 男人=man 中国男人=China (Chinese) man .
Just like Englishmen or Irishmen isn't racist, neither is Chinamen. It's just a function of the english language. The only reason it got applied to the Chinese was because of Hong Kong.
Being accused of witchcraft was often a death sentence. Pirates raped, kidnapped, slaughtered, pillaged and plundered. People were executed for being suspected werewolves and vampires. Vampires also became a thing because people were sometimes buried alive and would try to bite & scratch their way out of their coffins. I could go on, but there's some pretty dark matters or potentially offensive historical aspects to any Halloween costume. By these people's logic, Halloween just shouldn't have ANY costumes and also probably shouldn't exist because it could be argued it was appropriated from the pagan Celtics.
I went to her most recent video and commented on it. Just because she disabled the comments doesn't stop me from commenting. I just find another place to post it.
The thing about cultural appropriation makes me sad. What if I just REALLY love something from another culture? I bought a sari a few years ago cos I love Indian culture and adore Bollywood films. I just think they're really beautiful. I'm not game to wear it now. I'm not pretending white people invented saris,I'm not gonna wear bindis or say I understand the nuances of hinduism or pretend I understand everything about Indian culture, but now I feel like i'll get shit from folks like Frannie cos I actually appreciate and revere something from another country. It's wrong to be a fangirl of another nation's beauty & art now?
@@lupinsredjacket3191 I have a Yukata, bought it from a Japanese website designed specifically to sell to western countries. I look fucking adorable in it. I would love to have a Sari because I think they are beautiful. I also have shirts with Mandarin collars. I'm very white. Like "death frozen over" white thanks to being half Scandinavian. And if we were in Japan, China, or India the people there would be happy to see a westerner actively engaging in parts of their customs and culture. Numbnuts SJW's can call me whatever they want. They're just jealous that I can tie my own obi.
I wouldn’t be offended if you wore a sari. But you can’t like Bollywood movies, they are terrible and perpetuate the monopoly that Indian “filmmakers” have used for over two decades.
It Okey tho relax, but really culture appropriation wold be (the Kardashians) so you are free to love people's culture :3 I was in Japan and wear a yukata and the Japanese don't mind at all (only the chinese were annoying with me)
I'm half Indian. My dad's side is from Rajasthan to be more specific. They LOVE when others wear their styles! They felt like outcasts when coming to America. So when they saw white girls wearing bindis, they thought it was cute and felt more comfortable being themselves, as many Americans found them exotic and interesting. I say, if you're not being facetious and cruel, have fun and wear whatever you want! ♥️ Hell, even if you are being edgy, that's fine too. Lmao! Whatever floats your boat. 🤣
I love how the Asian woman says that no Chinese people have ever dressed like that "China boy" costume or in a similar fashion. There's an article on Wikipedia about the hair style. It's called a "queue". Franchesca Ramsey and MTV really need to do research!!
Also, wasn´t yellow color reserved for royalty? Wasn´t it supposed to be a prince costume? is not the same as those people dresing like, IDK Marie Antoniete or Napoleon?
Haha also people still had that hairstyle until just a few over a hundred year ago. That lady said "hundreds of years" instead. Seems like she doesn't even know much of the culture but is still trying to act "inclusive" lol.
Yeah, these are specifically Manchu style elements introduced by the Qing dynasty and extremely widespread when Europeans began walking all over China. The hats with the knobs on top had a system to signify your court standing and rank. And the long braids were enforced by penalty of death, so every guy had them; or no head, his choice, really. This is a persiflage of a Qing court official's garments in Emperor's yellow. It is not realistic to common Chinese people, nor accurate to the cut, pattern or quality. But the elements of the look are based on historical clothing worn in China. It's a stereotype, but it's literally the first thing European envoys would encounter in China in the 19th century.
Bruh I'm over 50% Cherokee and I actually get really excited and happy when someone dresses from my culture. I'm just happy they acknowledge and have a desire to take part in it.
My grandma has cats and I assure you not one of them looks like a sexy lady in a black leotard with a headband on and a piece of fabric safety pinned to their butt. That is some serious cultural appropriation guys, we gotta stop this injustice!
The "appropriation" lady in this video... she's saying that unless I'm Chinese I can't wear Chinese costumes. Isn't that a new form of segregation? So, I wonder what that "appropriation" lady would say belongs to American white people only. If she used "television" as one example .. then no other cultures should have a tv. Right? According to that lady.
"always dressed up as a Native American in elementary school" I took this literally, as in a lil tyke, every Monday through Friday, slapping on a feathered headress and face paint and the like, surrounded by regular t-shirt and short wearing kids lol. I dunno, it amused me in my head at least
@@nuclearchezburgr3857 that's fucking funny actually oh my god. i should have mentioned that i did so during dress up parties 💀💀💀 for the sake of keeping the weirdness, i won't edit my comment. wasn't a big brain time moment
@@novicephilosopher8118 Yeah, to put it lightly. For example, you have an Eastern European guy who wants to set up a dojo because he lovees traditional Asian martial arts and wants to share his passion with others but regardless of what he does, regardless of how respectful he is towards the traditional customs of said martial art, according to these people he's still not allowed to teach it or even perform it because of his skin color. Very cool.
I had a neighbor who lived in Japan and taught me a lot about the culture she learned while there, and I loved it so much I dressed up as a geisha one year. She even let me borrow a kimono of hers, and it was a lot of fun! Imagine your child self walking around in a costume you really enjoyed seeing come together and having a full grown adult, a stranger at that, point at you and say, “You can’t do that, it’s not like dressing up is apart of this holiday or anything. Stop that.” I know this is from 2016, but Halloween is right around the corner, and this happens to grind my gears.
Im middle eastern and that "sexy terrorist" costume made me laugh my ass off😂 definitely would highfive the person who dressed like that cuz they got a "SENSE OF HUMOR"
"How dare I remember the torture and discrimination my ancestors went through?!" Me: Um...I'm part Jewish, with my grandmother's family being one of the few successful Jews to escape the hellscape in Germany known as 'the holocaust'. Does that mean I can just keep pulling the same card for what exactly? Pity points and appearing like a saint to SJWs?! Uh, no thanks...
Her: How dare I forget the years of percecution, discrimination and enslavement suffered by blondes across the world just because they're blonde! The Slavs: 😒
I remember when I was young (like preschool or kindergarten) I dressed up in a Pocahontas costume that my grandmother made me (by hand). I was so goddamn proud of that costume, not only because it was one-of-a-kind, but because I loved Pocahontas so much. And not just from the Disney movie, I knew the story and life of the REAL Pocahontas and I just thought she was so badass and I had so much respect for her. Shame kids these days can't appreciate other cultures or people because it's "racist".
So by Francesca’s logic places like Japan and Korea are guilty of cultural appropriation. Because Japan has huge influence of traditional Chinese culture. Such as in ways of writing, dress, instruments, customs, philosophy, and architecture. Things such as Yin and Yang play a significant role in Japanese teachings such as Shintoism(a native religion of Japan). Or one of their most famous dress attire, the kimono is inspired by dress from the Tang Dynasty, same with the Korean hanbok. Instruments like the Gayaguem(Korean) and the Koto(Japanese) hail from China as well. For China they have also “taken” things from other cultures as well such as Buddhism from India and the Yangqin which comes from Persia. Something else that came from China was tea which played a major role in China throughout all the dynasties. It was through this exchange that new things came about: the Japanese tea ceremony, Tibetan salty butter tea, Turkish herbal tea, etc. If people like her existed back then, then the world wouldn’t have many of the cultural practices it does today that many people come to love about the world.
I thought the point of that Chinese outfit was to be a ghost. I've seen the same thing worn in Kung fu horror movies and anime such as Darkstalkers. 😐 *Halloween so isn't that the point.* Furthermore, why be offended when a kid clearly wears it because they actually like and admire your culture?
I think the costume was probably inspired by a sort of vampire like zombie found in Chinese mythology. I believe they are called Jiangshi and they mostly get around by hopping.
@@Neku628 Jiangshi do wear tradition garb, but as I recall, they were mostly blue, and the Jiangshi has long fingernails, pale face and hops around. That yellow set looks more like royalty or wealthy people; Silk was extremely expensive and was reserved for people of trades who can afford a house.
Does anyone even bother asking Asian people about this? Literally no one in my family has a problem with geisha costumes and so on. Every other Asian person I’ve seen talk about this has been of the same opinion- it’s appreciation. If the person themselves is rude, or offensive about it- it’s not because of the costume. They were already going to be rude no matter what the costume was
@@koishikomeiji9162 My girlfriend is Chinese, I'm an american. I would never ask her a question like that, she'd rightly call me a fucking idiot for doing so. Putting race above all else is such an insufferable way to view the world
Sometimes I wish the Joker, or Thanos was a real threat to our current society, that way people would finally have something important to bitch about. Thank you again JLongbone, you give me hope.
Isn't it cultural appropriation the fact that a lot of western countries have based their language on Latin which is greatly influenced by Greek ...? Therefor when they talk they culturally appropriate ...? Cultural appropriation IS NOT A THING ... Love your videos ,you are so funny
Not only is dressing as Medusa cultural appropriation, it's misogynistic. That story is literally about a rape victim being punished, and dressing up as her is a form of tacit agreement.
So let me recap, Francesca wanted to talk about cultural appreciation of Halloween costumes, but in the vid, she pretended to be white, compared objects to cultures, but then at the end showed everyone that she was Medusa for Halloween, which is apart of Greek Mythology culture. Welp it made sense to me. I lost it at 1:01, I'm half Mexican, I find it hilarious more than offensive 😂😂😂
My wife who is caucasian escorted our daughter house to house for trick or treating. I was the driver. At some point, I saw my wife arguing with a stranger and I became worried so I went to them. It turned out a stranger was mad because my daughter dress like one of her favorite anime character. She assumed my daughter race and shamed my wife. I happened to be Japanese and told them off to stay away from my family. Making them aware it was my permission and they have no right to attack my family and feel offended on my behave of my culture. They tried to play coy and never apologized for being rude and wrong. I was very close to being violent but my primary concern was the safety of my family, not retaliation. I did a research on this topic and I found out about this PC movement. And it disgusted me to no end.
This last Halloween this guy in California I believe tried to get star wars stormtrooper costumes banned cuz of the Nazis but the German Stoßtruppen was a WW1 thing they didn't have them in WW2 which was the Nazis
Another awesome commentary video! 👍 These people are some serious killjoys! Who does extensive research before purchasing a Halloween costume? Does anyone really take Buzzfeed or MTV as respectable sources to discuss culture and race, their "political" videos tend to be an overall embarassing piece of propaganda.
Oh shit! I guess I need to burn my childhood photos of when I dressed as Pocahontas and Mulan. I think my sister dressed as a ninja one year and my brother a cowboy. Wait is dressing as a ninja turtle offensive? Nevermind we'll burn the whole lot! Just found your channel and am binging your videos. I love your attitude. Subscribed.
uhm my grandma's Greek and her going as Medusa is very offensive to me lol nah jk I actually have real issues in my life to deal with and I don't care about "issues" like what costume someone wears...

"who won't shut the fuck up about culturmahfnjkanfhakf... culteral *adds beat* hammghhanfgndjnf" hahaha I was in TEARS at that intro hahaha. Love your channel!
I think any man should wear a kilt if they have enough confidence, regardless of Scottish or Irish heritage. That ain't cultural appropriation, that's SEXY.
I think the only problem would be religious garments like the Headdress the rest of the outfit is okay to wear just not the Headdress bc the feathers are supposed to represent the honor towards the warriors, male specific the women had a few feathers even the chiefs didn't have the full blown Headdress it was articles I read a bit ago so my memory isn't that great tho lmAO not being like this lady where I'm gonna hATE ON YA FPR DRESSING LIKE A NATIVE EVEN THO YOURE NOT just saying I can see why ppl dislike it in terms of the Headdress
People dressing as aliens is offensive to me. I was hatched in a pod, 13.8 billion light years away on my planet Xanax and it just really pisses me off how humans try to be cute when they're so far off on my culture.
I was embarrassed to be photographed dressing as a Nazi at Halloween. I was so humiliated....I mean I completely forgot it was Halloween, I would have worn a silly costume instead of my regular clothes
Can we just tell these people that if we take their advice at heart and those that aren't of Irish descent would not be allowed to participate on Halloween?
Can I just note at 7:56, the "I didn't mean it" example clearly falls flat on its face even within her principle. Even if I agree "not intending doesn't undo damage," the fact that she said "here let me show you" and stepped on blonde strawman's foot for explanation indicates there WAS intent to cause that injury, by virtue of trying demonstrate hurt and then saying "I didn't mean to" despite that action requiring conscious and intentional action to do something you are fully aware will cause pain. Strictly under her logic, a much better example would be someone looking at a phone and walking right into you, or accidentally dropping a heavy object (something you lack the degree of control your own foot has). It's telling when even their own strawmanned logic still can't be consistent with itself, much less with actual human behavior of the people they are supposedly trying to communicate to (or lecture, more cynically)
Doesn't all human clothing, language and behaviour exist through the scope of culture? You can't wear any piece of clothing without its origins being traceable to some culture. So as long as different peoples come in contact (as they have for all of human history, but especially through globalisation) , cultural appropriation takes place. This leads me to the curious conclusion that it is, in fact, not a bad thing... hmm
Usually when you find someone saying EVERYTHING IS RACIST! The overcompensating is just to cover up there own racism. Funny she mentioned Gandhi. Gandhi is documented saying racist things about black people. So remember this fact. EVERYTHING IS RACIST!!!!
Blonds were enslaved by the Vikings. So what is she talking about. The best way to deal with people wanting to offend is to not be offended. It drives them crazy!
