REACTING TO AURORA - Cure For Me 

Finally someone else who loves this song as much as I do! A lot of people I know have said that is sounds too "mainstream" and "unlike" aurora for them. I don't really agree. C'mon, think logically. An artist will never keep the same style of music as always. People change, we evolve, it's normal! Imagine how boring it would be to get the same songs all over again!? Unfortunately, some people just don't get it. But I'm glad you do. The meaning behind it is so inspiring. Aurora is slowly opening up people's eyes to the beauty of life.

I don't know how it's possible for someone to be simultaneously so unbelievably magical, and totally real. A big part of her appeal is that completely genuine personality, and yet in all other respects it's like she came from another dimension.

I might be wrong, but the dance here reminds me of 1920's flapper style, something the outfit in "Exist for love" did too, an era and style where women started doing more of their thing with dancing and music. It's also a very rigid dance compared to how she usually moves in her videos and on stage. Gives me the sneaking suspicion that this is a little dig at those who have criticised her way of moving and want her to conform more, especially when she stands with arms spread, forearms pointing down, a stance often used to portray a marionette hanging from its strings. Combined with the masks on the other dancers, this whole video seems like a juxtaposition of how a pop artist is supposed to be versus how she wants to be and is. This blends very well with the lyrics where the contrast between what you are and what society expects you to be. I could, of course be talking absolute bollocks, but these are the impressions I get from the video.

First time I heard it was on spotify. I didnt know anything about it and I thought, ehm, ok... I dont know... Then I listen to it again. And again. She wrote this against (gay) conversion therapy. A necessary message, which of course can also be applied to anyone standing up for themselves. Aurora’s always been theatrical and she’s gaining confidence as she matures. But I agree when a song is slower, we are able to hear her vocal capabilities better. Her song that she wrote when she was 11(!!), Runaway, is still my favorite song. By the way Billie Eilish randomly came across a song by Aurora (which might very well have been Runaway), and she said that was the moment she knew she wanted to be a singer/songwriter. And my favorite Billie Eilish song is Ocean Eyes, which she wrote when She was 11! Here she sings it with Alicia Keyes, who also loves this song. I loved the addition of this quirky upbeat piece. I can see whole audiences being energized by it. And the dance moves - I’m not one to use the word “adorable” for any teen or adult, but there’s just not a great alternative word for the immediate smile the dance gave me.

Happy birthday (with delay), Adam - and happy times waiting for Aurora coming to perform for you in the fall (I have huge hopes for her new album being a great evolution - and I curious to how she will reshape her back-catalogue this time around). As someone who spent 2 decades in the "Bergen School" of electronica - this is like a love letter from the past. But I also get some serious "Pet Shop Boys" references (topically). In addition - Datarock (also from Bergen) was a band that referenced "videogame soundscapes" at least two decades ago (Check out "Computer Camp Love). The Bergen musical scene was always very open - but also small and supportive - and Aurora as a raver sure knew to get herself exposed to it (she is singing on Chemical Brother tracks after all). I have noticed some confuse this with current mainstream "EDM" - to them I say "ohhh no, my friends. We do not use instrumentation/superficial production values to define such things". That is like thinking Røyksopp churned out "EDM" decades ago. This is very cerebral and clever. I also like that Aurora has taken a page out of her friend "Sigrid's" manual of sassiness. (no) Cure for me + Don't kill my vibe - you have a pretty consistent message from two friends right there. I also like a lot that Aurora is bouncing out of the blocks coming out of Covid. We are all aware that she has explored the "symphonic" and acoustic/unplugged qualities of her music quite a bit over the past couple of years (mostly through streaming). It is such a typical Aurora move - she suddenly dropped the first song from her new album last year - sensing that we all needed a love song while being isolated. Now she has plugged back in - sending us out into the world of re-socialising with some solid advice on not caring too much about what other people think we need to fix - and a simple guide to kick our heels up like during post WW1 and post "Spanish Flu pandemic" in the 1920s fashion. This would have been a better Euro2020 song than the Bono thing - and a good kick in the butt for a UEFA that did not dare to allow Berlin to light up its stadium in rainbow colours during the, for all of us important (no matter how we swing), pride month. Since "We, the people" know how to accept each other - and ourselves. For being so "cute and random", Aurora sure is about as punk as one can get.

Great reaction Adam! I must say that this new song has not resonated with me yet - that being said, I don't think it's a bad song, just does not move me like so many of her other songs have. On the positive side (and there is a lot), the message is incredibly important and it's delivered in an upbeat dance song that will probably give her much more exposure than she has gotten up until now (I think she might be emotionally and spiritually ready for that now). The video is visually stunning and a lot of fun to watch (especially the dancing). Her voice is maturing and is becoming richer while still being uniquely Aurora. I did hear her perform a version of this song with just her on the piano, and I must say that I enjoyed that much more. I was glad to hear that the rest of her album will not be like Cure For Me and I'm hoping that I'll enjoy some of the other new directions she's moving into as much or more than I have enjoyed all her music in the past - I'm pretty sure I will.

Great reaction! This video from Aurora reminds me in some way of Fellini's films. The room/backdrop in the video is actually a re-creation of a set from the Tim Burton film 'Alice in Wonderland,' and AURORA says that the dance she created is based on one performed in that film by Johnny Depp -- 'Futterwacken dance' (but also with elements of the Charleston). The masks she herself painted feel very felliniesque (and possibly reference Dionysus. She said there is a god or goddess being invoked in each new video -- in EXIST FOR LOVE it was of course Venus).

Have been following you for 1 year now and fun to look back on how happy you were for 600-800 subscribers😀 But you deserve each and every one, because I think you are the best in the game. All the artists you do. But of course mostly Aurora. Very happy to hear that she is coming to where you live Newcastle (has been there) and that you really have something to look forward to. She really likes and performs in the UK as she has done throughout her career, and she turned it around a bit extra then, and has always been well received and liked in the UK. Welcome back and happy belated Birthday! :) This song is so different, but still so very Aurora and i love it. Really looking forward to the coming album! I also prefer the more ballad songs, but as long as she sings about issues that she believe in, i'll keep listening to what she puts out there :) That said, i'm really looking forward to a live version of this song, as i'm sure we'll see different performances of it :D Really jealous you get a chance to see her. I just spent a good majority of my day watching all your reactions to my favorite songs by Aurora, which included the very first few you posted, and I absolutely love how much you ended up loving her and her music. The motif I am pretty sure is a nod to the movie Brazil. The musical motif is pretty much identical. The plot of that movie align with the message of “cure for me”. The 4 heads in the music video is probably a reference to “Bohemian rhapsody”, the theme of that song also align with “cure for me”. Where the dancers forms extra hands could be a reference to “Shiva”. I don’t think anything Aurora does is coincidental, so I guess there is a lot of symbolism for ppl to dig into in this music video.

I had zero expectations with this first single..... But I genuinely love this. It's a great first single...upbeat and danceable. As Aurora herself said, the rest of the album goes in all sorts of diverse directions. This is just one song. But it slaps! I love the microtonal little melodies she does...bending up and down from the note. You don't hear stuff like that enough these days....given all the autotune. Oh...speaking of autotune lol....have you reacted to her autotune interview yet? If not....get on that! It's absolutely hilarious. "That's my new single, where my bitches at in da club. Oh Adam, it released on my birthday as well (july 8th), and are lead to believe we might be birthday buddies ! Regardless of that, happy belated, hope your day went well ! I really enjoy this song, although I prefer her slower tunes, it’s still very Aurora and what’s not to like? I feel that it might be a bit of a conversation about conversion therapy because it has been a hot topic in Norway as of late (our prime minister using it as a means to win votes, which I personally find despicable), but I might be wrong. The lyrics just reads as such to me, that someone is trying to change and cure you and your ‘sickness’, keeping you from whom you truly love, and I wouldn’t put it past her to talk about such matters. We should all know that being gay isn’t a ‘sickness’, but conversation therapy still exists so clearly some don’t.

As I understand it, this song did arise from when Norway debated a new law forbidding christian communities to cure gay people, and many of us thought the new law, prohibiting that for people under 18, should have been an absolute ban.
