Nice!!! Good for you guys! Similar story here, but I was never really sure how I felt about homosexuality; I was just raised to think it was wrong. Which is probably why I didn’t realize I was bi until my 20s. I shut down all those thoughts about girls and said, “That’s just Satan trying to tempt you.” My husband was raised Mormon, too, so coming out to him was not easy. He’s come a long way. Still not 100%. But he’s a sweetheart. We’ll get there. 😊

the concept of polygamy was brought up at one point in an english class because of a book we were reading, which led a kid to joke about the character being mormon. I was so paralyzed by embarrassment, (especially since I was living in NJ at the time and didn't know that anyone even knew what a mormon was) and confronted him after class like "oh well we haven't even practiced polygamy in like 200 years!" ...acknowledging that polygamy is wack as hell but somehow thinking it was okay because it isn't currently happening??

I was a counselor at an FSY and I was assigned to check everyone was modestly dressed for the formal dance. I wanted to wear this flowy dress I really liked but was above the knee, so in order to set an example, I wore this plain, straight, black skirt underneath to cover my knees. LOL mine made it in! I'm the EFY kid that got a chunk of my hair cut out because my mom had driven me 4 hours to Cedar City and had already left. It was a temp/hairspray color but they didn't let me wash it, they just cut it. I did so many cringey things but that one still haunts me. Who the fuck does that to a 15 year old girl? I also have really large breasts and while on trek, they made us do this thing where when we put on our shirts, we had to bend from the waist and hang all the way to the floor. We would be inspected for 'modesty' from our leaders who were standing. Even with a shirt that goes above my collar, i will have cleavage. I was constantly sent back to change and shamed for being immodest. I remember REPENTING because I was constantly immodest and a temptation to men and I would spend every night during the week of trek crying because I was 'tempting' the boys. Being exhausted, overworked, and sick wasn't enough for me, I also had to make myself feel guilty for being a 'slut' constantly. There was nothing I could do to change it because it was my natural body and the form of modesty check was insane. I thought that it was fair that I was getting in trouble. A few times I was 'punished' by having to be the person to prepare dinner and do all the dishes for my ward alone and on the testimony night, i included that the punishment helped me grow stronger spiritually and that I knew God would have been proud of me. I ended up literally binding my chest with ace bandages the entirety of trek while i also had walking pneumonia. It is unsafe to bind and exercise but on top of that i wasn't safely binding and was already sick. I ended up in the medic tent 3 times to get IV fluids and when we got home I spent a week in the hospital because it turned to full on pneumonia. But you know, it was the will of God and I did what he wanted me to do. I still can't believe that i was constantly shamed for having large breasts when I couldn't do anything about them. Even outside of trek, I never showed any cleavage but if i bent over, you could see it and i constantly was shaming myself on being a temptation to the men. It would be brought up in front of EVERYONE at mutual every week that I was being immodest and they'd give me like 'shame' clothing of oversized shirts and basketball shorts but I'd still have my boobs visible, I couldn't control that. I would cry all the time because I hated my body so much that it made me have horrible body image issues. I'm 24 now and going for a reduction for medical reasons but I still think that a part of me is still stuck on constantly being shamed for something I couldn't control. Other girls were praised on their modesty constantly when they had little to no chest and I desperately wanted to be them so bad that I would pray that God would come and GIVE ME BREAST CANCER so that I could have my boobs removed surgically. The church made me twist my thoughts into thinking that breast cancer would make me a better woman so i wouldn't tempt the boys and be immodest vs just being the woman I was born as and excepting that I have large boobs and men need to control themselves. I think that might be more sad than cringe but in my mind, it's so fucking cringey.

I just read a number of articles on how the church teaches teens that boys have no control over themselves, and if they get turned on, it is the "fault" of the woman. Women and girls are even being blamed and punished for "allowing themselves to be raped". It is horrific that this still goes on in 2020. It also baffles me that there aren't more lawsuits from the women who are systematically abused and shamed by the Mormon church. As a well-endowed woman, I definitely understand wanting/needing a reduction, but I hope the relief you find is more than just physical.

Former Southern Baptist Fundamentalist here, my church made the middle school youth groups go door to door to every business we could find and ask the store managers what ethnicity they were. Apparently it was supposed to help a new church plant? Anyways, they suggested that instead of straight up asking, we should “coax the information out of them naturally.” Which ALWAYS ended in some horribly awkward and probably very offensive conversation. I remember being pushed into a nail salon by my youth leader and I said “wow it looks so Asian-y in here.” Expecting the nail techs to tell me what Asian country they came from, instead they all looked horrified and then I died inside and promptly walked out

Funnily enough, I turned out to be wrong about whatever we were arguing about and he was also the deacon's quorum president of his ward, and far more gracious and humble than I was.

Thankfully I knew something was whack about Mormonism around the age of 12-13 so I don't really have any cringey self righteous stories, but the amount of boldface lies and pretending I had to endure in the church until I was 18 and allowed to choose for myself was pretty damn cringe. Lying through my teeth for every temple recommend interview was probably the worst. So I would do baptisms once a week between school periods, and I would feel sooooo much guilt and shame if I forgot to take off a necklace or had nail polish on in the baptismal font. I was told that everything had to be white, and I had seen some of my friends be turned away because they wore nail polish. Of course, it always depended on the people helping out at the font and what they had culturally been taught. I also didn't know that they reused temple names, so I thought I was the one and done for each person I was proxy for. Lovely to be 12 -14 and thinking that it was my fault that someone didn't get the blessings of being baptized, and consequentially being denied all heaven for all eternity because I forgot to take off my gold young women's medallion.

I think I was 6 or 7 and I was on the elementary school grounds before school had started. There were some magnificent god rays surrounded by heavy cloud cover and the majority of the class, myself included, thought it was a sign that the 2nd coming was about to happen. And then the bell rang and we had to go to class anyway. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to feel cringe on behalf of my ancestors, but my grandmother, when asked to retell her mormon ancestry in a talk at church, included an anecdote where her grandfather (I think) basically kidnapped an indigenous baby and left it in a crib in his wife's room and watched as the baby's mother showed up to the house unable to communicate in English with his wife about the missing kid. And he laughed about it as he set it up as a joke. And my grandmother retold it. And I feel so many levels of cringe between mormon and pioneer ancestry. As far as I can tell, since the story goes no further, the baby got back to his mom and the wife was less than thrilled with her husband.

Why is caffeinated hot chocolate okay to drink, but caffeinated hot coffee not okay to drink? I am so confused about the whole "hot drinks" ban.
@87glassrose
@87glassrose 3 года назад
So the “logic” we were presented growing up is that the instructions were “no hot drinks” applied to the common hot drinks available at the times it was given which were coffee and tea ☕️. It is true that at the time hot chocolate was still not commonly available. Also most people wouldn’t consider soup to be “hot drinks” as that would be food. I generally consider the whole matter just a way of controlling people and know darn well the whole thing is ridiculous! But there it is the justifications most Mormons were given for the arbitrary and vagueness of the rules...

On my mission in Uganda in 2001, I was training a brand new missionary who, I swear, had never before been outside his über Mormon Idaho town. Back then the Internet was extremely spotty, and we had arranged to email our families at a local evangelical pentacostal pastor's home on P-day. On one such occasion, the pastor had a prayer meeting at his home in the adjacent room. The prayers started out quiet and gradually crescendoed to a very loud volume as each person in the room was praying, speaking in tongues, and praising or whatever. Suddenly, everyone in the room would go silent and begin again at a whisper and ultimately crescendo again to a very loud volume. This cycle of pianissimo to fortissimo repeated several times. Meanwhile, I looked over at my greenie, thinking he was writing his weekly email to his family, and saw him with both hands clamped tightly to desk as he was hyperventilating! I'm from the South, I've seen this kind of thing before and wasn't fazed in the least, but greenie was about to make a huge scene, so I told him to step outside and chill and breathe and not to make a scene. He stepped outside, and I was relieved. So I started writing an email to my parents. I'll be damned if not two minutes later he walks back into the house, stands at the front of the room where the prayer meeting was taking place, raised his right arm to the square, and proclaimed, "In the name of Jesus Christ and by the authority of the Holy Melchizedek Priesthood, command the devil and all his demons to depart!" Then he immediately walked back outside. I sat there with my jaw on the floor, dumbfounded!! Luckily, the people were praying so loudly, not a soul noticed him, he was just another loud voice that was drowned out by the rest of the room!! In fact, the prayer meeting continued without the slightest hint he even entered the room, with several more cycles of whispers to deafening praying. I finished my email (I think I recall writing to my parents, "You will not believe what my companion just did...") and then joined him outside and proceeded home. I didn't mention the episode to him for a week, thinking this poor kid's faith must be all kind of shaken. Finally, I said to him, "Elder W., last week at the pastor's house, you came in and 'cast out the devil', but nothing changed and the prayer meeting continued as if you never entered the room. Why do you think that is?" He replied, "I immediately felt better and no longer felt that evil presence. It did bother me at first that nothing changed in the room, but I realized it was more for me than for them." Having rationalized and justified this in his mind, all I could say was, "Ok. I'm glad you sorted through that and are at peace with it." And that is the cringiest Mormon moment of my life. Oh, I've done and said more than my share of cringy Mormon things, but nothing will ever beat this clean-cut, straight-laced Peter Priesthood casting out devils at a pentacostal pastor's home during a prayer meeting!
