I can only speak for myself, but at that time I was just completely fed up with the whole Brexit thing. I even thought that the EU was too soft in dealing with Britain, one delay after the other with no result. Then I felt sorry for the 49 percent of Brits who voted against the Brexit, but the indeciviness and the incompetence if the british government was just so infuriating. Everyone could see that they didn't really expect that referendum to succeed, but when it did they were completely caught offguard. It was just a case of utter stupidity. To be honest, this whole affair has greatly damaged the image of Britain in Europe, perhaps irreversably.

He isn't just the anchorman of the show, he also writes many of the texts (his own obviously, but also for many of the other people in the show). about Stuttgart 21: they wanted to build new underground railway lines and new underground stations including a new underground main station in Stuttgart. Construction started in 2010. Actually, everything should be finished in 2019. Now it is planned that the first part will be finished in 2025, the rest later. When they presented the plans they said it cost 2.5 billion euros, when construction started they already planned with 4.1 billion euro, in 2022 they planned that it will cost 9.1 billion euros.
@aoeuable
@aoeuable 10 месяцев назад
Even better: The new station will have a lower capacity than the old one. On the "upside", of course, lots of track will be moved underground allowing DB to sell the land and generate profit for the federation. They tried the same in Hamburg but it so happens that DB didn't have full property rights as the city back in the days sold the land in cheaply specifically to build a station, not to speculate with land and so the city got the land back cheaply. Also moving Altona makes way more sense turn it 45 degrees move it northwards and now it's actually on the corridor it's serving.
@Psi-Storm
@Psi-Storm 10 месяцев назад
The costs increases is one thing and usually expected for these mega projects. The bigger problem is that the 8 railway platforms won't be enough to support the planned Deutschlandtakt. So the new railway station will cause significant delays in the grid plans.

The joke at 4:05 is a running gag in the entire setting of the Heute Show. The show is broadcasted on the ZDF which means Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (Second German TV Channel) and is one of the few channels that are not privately owned, and a lot of the TV program throughout the day is aimed at relatively older people. So the Heute Show picks that up whenever something’s mentioned about older people 😅

The main problem with referendums is that people answer to the person asking rather than to the question. It takes a strong referendum culture to avoid it, meaning a lot of very regular referendums (once a year or more frequently, on various subjects) are required for people to start focusing on the matter at hand rather than on what message they want to send to politicians. The Swiss seem to have managed that pretty well but I’m not sure there are that many other examples.

As a person out of the area of Stuttgart I can tell you that this stuttgart 21 voting causes a lot of problems with here. Different Underground lanes or stations take turn to get completly blocked for months over the past few years. Because of the roadworks around the big area of the construction site the traffic by car is disturbed as well. No need to start talking about the 15 Minutes pedestrian walk around the main station if you need to change between different types of trains. The referendum of the people was back in 2011 when the construction work and the problems started and there published new costs every half a year. Big protests were there within stuttgart at that time and police used their water canons against the demonstrants. Parts of the new governance of Baden-Württemberg (german state stuttgart is located in) that time wanted to deescalte the situation with referendum about a law that forces the governance to cancel the project. So the referendum was actually about the law not S21, so if you wanted S21 to be canceled you would have need to vote 'Yes' and if you wanted it to be continued you needed to Vote for 'No'. with 58% of votes for 'No' out of the whole state area (Not only Stuttgart)the referendum ended up backing Stuttgart 21. Of couse after that referendum some more hidden costs were published but the protests didn't get big again at all. If you are interested why a lot of people did not want S21 to be build I recommend the "Die Anstalt" episode about the Deutsche Bahn (DB) from January 29th, 2019. Maybe someone will translate it in the future.

So the question was not whether or not we wanted a new Station but whether or not we wanted a poisened building site for ever. In my 12th year in school which was in 2000, we still had geography books with the DDR... No money for that after 11 years of reunion, but for an unneccessary Station... No comment...its a disgrace😊

Together with "Die Anstalt", this is my most favourite satire show and frankly the only German TV stuff I'm watching nowadays. I couldn't agree more with what you were saying. It's just so intelligent and funny at the same time. It helps while situations are really frustrating :)

Oliver Welke is mainly a TV Presenter, but he dubbed Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie with Oliver Kalkofe (try him, too!) and apperead in the latter's two Edgar Wallace-parodies Der Wixxer 1 & 2 in a cameo role.

He did not only appear in the movies, he wrote and effectively co-produced them. The movies were the brainchild of Kalkofe and Welke.

It is really funny to see these videos again and I enjoy it to see your reaction. Sometime the missunderstandings and bad translations but also to see that german sarkasm works and that we share the same humor. Normally I am not fan of that kind of videos, but I use it to get a better understanding for english language and also the mentality for british people. It is nice to see that you like german things so much. Even if the content is older, these are still great artists you are watching. Some content is regional but what you have also to watch is from the second German television (ZDF) Mr. Jan Böhmermann with his show ZDF Magazin Royal. You will love it too. I am waiting for new videos and will be happy to continue watching.

Is the Mediathek regionally limited? Otherwise he would sure find some nice content there too, however I would not know if they offer English subs

@@mvhdsk1122 The Mediathek is not limited (only some content e.g. football results), but some broadcasts are limited for one year. They offer mostly only German subs

I think Ulrich van Heesen's piece was not too far over the edge to German satire or comedy standards, although the incest allusion was quite tough (but also funny, of course). Ulrich van Heesen is just his comedy name for the Heute Show, by the way. His real name is Dietrich Hollinderbäumer and he is a German-Swedish actor who is quite popular and already 81 years old.

The Problem is "heute Show" is no Kabarett Show, it is a Kabarett Weekly News Spot like a normal News Spot. So it is difficult to set a point on one topic.

Of course the commentary is over the top and meant tongue in cheek but.... it's not entirely unfair is it. I just enjoy this channel for featuring a scotsman appreciating German humour, that's yeti style rare.

With Stuttgart21 it's a different story. That was a referenum about a railway project that had been allowed by the government. It took place because the amount of monex necessary to follow through with the project basically tripled. The problem was that the people had to vote against an actually existing law, so if you were against the project you would have to vote "yes". The press titled weeks after weeks "Stuttgart21 yes or no" implanting an opposite syntax to the actual referendum which pretty much overwhelmed the intellectual capacity of many people...

I don’t know why but me as a German I like watching how you like our satire and comedy and you don’t take it too serious…at the end we all just want a good laughter! And trust me the show is roasting our politicians and our people also as hard as it gets 😂

among the best parts of the heute show is Gernot Hassknecht (you can translate his name to "Ger(man)distress hate-servant") and his yearly recaps and general replies to situations on another note: i am still wondering why the heute shows title is displayed so big on top of the video... copyright issues?

Well... in my region in the south of Germany, I actually live near Stuttgart and have seen the project Stuttgart 21 (which should be renamed to Stuttgart 23 or Stuttgart 24... or or or...), we like to call the British "Island Monkeys", Inselaffen :D Not in a bad intention but just to make fun of them ^^ I really like your channel and in general like the Scottish people. Love you accent, reminds me very much of Amy MacDonald, who is Scottish herself :D Or Sean Connery, who always sounded like "God s(h)ave the Queen" :D

Two very fitting quotes on democracy are commonly attributed to Winston Churchill: 1) ‘The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.’ 2) ‘Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time….’

Do not think that you have the worst politicians who have no idea. Here in Germany it is no better. I also watch the Heute Show regularly, but unfortunately I can't laugh so much about it anymore because it's just so depressing what's happening in Germany, the EU and elsewhere. Ulrich van Heesen, by the way, is already borderline in our country, but to the point.

A representative study by the Tui Foundation showed this year: Of 7,000 16 to 26-year-olds surveyed in Germany, Great Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Greece and Poland, only 22 percent believe that they will one day be better off than their parents. Corona, war, inflation, climate change... Other countries are also affected. Right-wing extremist parties benefit from this... with their incitement, their lies and their deceit. Right-wing extremism is the greatest threat to democracy and not the current crises.

Stuttgart 21 was the idea of a underground Train station for some tons of money , but we have to cut down a lot of trees in the park. so demostration but they got a "experience" of Repautoire of Police violents , that tooks a long of time and growing constructions cost on speed. People realy hate that Prestige- building

Stuttgart 21 referendum was a mess. Many people did not even understand the simple question that was something like: "Do you want to use the option to chancel the contract?" That would be like the brexit referendum being "Do you want the prime minister to invoke article 50 of the Treaty on European Union?"
