Critics said her voice was "damaged" and she was singing too "whispery". Clearly those people didn't listen to any of the songs the whole way through.

Fun Fact: Mottola had been bribing radio programmers to not play Mariah's music. This is what was truly detrimental to Mariah's success at this time. Radio was still a necessity. This became apparent when some emails of his leaked online. He was bribing them with Sony electronics and exclusives with his artists if they kept Mariah off air. Between that and MJ roasting him got him fired the following year. Radio Music Hall was appalled when they realized the numbers of people requesting Mariah and nobody was playing her made them look dishonest. So, they gave her a special award for being the most requested - an award they've never given before or since then.

When Westerners gave up on Mimi in this era... Through the Rain charted #1 all over the East especially in Asia... I remember hearing it alot as a kid back home in the Philippines on the radio... Charm Bracelet tour was also her first time performing in the Philippines. It was outdoors, she was sweating like crazy 😂 but the humidity did her voice so much favors because the vocals were insane... ❤❤❤

Fun fact. Kelly Osbourne told a story about how Mariah back in the 90s use to call them during Christmas time and would sing black sabbath/ Ozzy Osbourne song's to them over the phone. Mariah and Sharon are also friends. Wish she would've done more Rock songs, originals or covers. Mariah and pink Floyd would've been crazy.

She recorded Sunflowers in one take and she was never able to sing it again! Def Lepard loved her cover of BOTH and were super happy because it made some good money for them!

Charmbible is such an underrated album! I always tell people this and Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel are sister albums. So, so good!

“Subtle Invitation” (another Derek Jeter one) is one of my all time favorites! She references “Anytime You Need A Friend” in the adlibs bc that was his favorite song of her’s, and he told her he’d listen to it before every game. “If you’re listening to me baby // like you used to // before I even knew you // then you know I’m singing to you // so I just wanted you to know that ‘any time you need a friend’” “Subtle Invitation” also interpolates “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” by Rod Stewart. ALSO, I love the So So Def remix of “The One”! Other favs include “Lullaby”, “My Saving Grace”, and “You Had Your Chance”.

I’m so happy that you enjoyed Charmbraclet! Although it was not commercially successful during the time when it was released, I do feel like it has aged gracefully 20+ years later. Charmbracelet is definitely Mariah’s Sleeper Album, it doesn’t get enough Credit, Tho the album doesn’t Explore much when it comes to Music Genre, it’s a Primary Pop, R&B, Hip-Hop and Soul Album with some Gospel influences in Couple of the Songs, but what I Love about the Album is Mariah still knows How to give us Her Signature Sugary Fluttery Mid Tempo Dancy and Groovy type Songs, Songs like Boys (I Need You), The One, You Got Me, You Had Your Chance, Miss You (Japan Bonus Track Version) and There Goes My Heart (Bonus CD Version), these are the Perfect Example 👍🏼 I Love that She Restrained Her Vocals and letting a lot of the Beat Flows but still Singing Over it and Created Beautiful Melodies with a lot of these Songs with that Whispery Tones of Hers, Her Vocal Transitions in these Album I would said Arguably the Best She’s Done since Buttery Album (1997), She is such a Musical Genius on using Her Vocals in this Album ❤️ then You got Through The Rain, Through The Rain Remix and My Saving Grace were My Favs on this Album 😊❤️

YESSSSS CHARMBRACELET ✨✨💜❤️💚🥂. This Album is still Amazing to this day. Not only had she Gone thru truly tough losses and life experiences but in true Mariah form , she was able to Translate those feelings into Song . Her Voice was clear yet Maturing with a bit more Husky tone which just Accentuated her Airyness and Created this Era of Hazy Blissful Airy Dreamy Tones with Sooo Many Colors and textures , ☺️🤗🤤🤤. As many others have also commented, Her Live tour vocals were PHENOMENAL 🤯🤯💯. I highly recommend her Performance of Subtle Invitation Live In Los Angeles (Charmbracelet Tour) & Even her Musical interlude , BAND INTRO, where she sings and riffs with the Band and Back up singers . As you stated Some people are just meant to do Music and Mariah is 1 of them.

Subtle Invitation is 🔥 🔥 🔥. If you liked that track then you’ll love the Emancipation album. Lots of throwback R&B coming your way.

Oh and I LOVE the Through The Rain Remix! Give it a few more listens. It’s so uplifting. Also, Mariah used to start her albums with a Happy Party sing and end intimate. But on Charmbracelet she came out of the struggle so she started with an intimate ballad and turned that ballad into a happy song at the end.

My favourite from this album is Subtle Invitation... You need really good headphones to hear the nuances of the song. The guitar, the climax, multiple F#5s and G#5. She's inhumane to create something like that ❤

My favorite tracks are Through the rain, Boy, You got me, My Saving Grace ... BUT my ultimate favorite since day 1 is lullaby ;) If you read the lyrics, that's clearly a part 2 to The Roof, i'm sure Mariah and Derek Jeter saw each other again in 2002, and we got that song !! :D Can't wait for your reaction to Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel !! Charmbracelet was and will always be my era. It is such a beautifully created album, all from a personal note from Mimi to us (her fans). It may not have been a strong comeback so to say but this album cuts deep in to you like as if she's healing you ❤️ Mimi is the best!! ✨

My favorite is Subtle Invitation because it's JAZZ! If you listen to the 'Anytime You Need a Friend' remix, Mariah actually scats in that remix. She can do JAZZ like it's nothing!!!!!!!!! The first time I heard her scat in full jazz format - I was BLOWN AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this was how she worked happily. When you listen to the album without doing research was like me and friends firstly listened to the cassette more than 20 years ago. It was like we love all tracks with super whispery voices but we're not sure which song would be a hit. All tracks were not that chart-friendly. All we can noticed from the sticker on its box was the tract that might be singles ttr, boy, the one, yours. The sound production was so def jam unlike when she's with sony or emi and at the time billboard chart were storming by urban music. When Mariah did signature songs in def jam style, it's weird and let loose. But when I listened to the whole of them, comparing to billboard back then, I didn't expect any of them to chart but only boy which is okay while the original song charted not long ago. Luckily, I KNOW WHAT YOU WANT released and be the most potential tract to chart from this era. Later on, I guess the label understood what market wanted, what to do, and which way to go.

Actually Mariah does have a secret rock grunge album called someone's ugly daughter. That she recorded at the same time as daydream as a little get away from her horrible relationship with Tommy. She never released it because it would ruin her image but she gave the songs she wrote to an artist called chick. She was actually considering rerecording the songs and releasing it recently so we'll see.

Something everyone gets wrong about "obsessed" is that it's not just about Eminem. Memoirs is about Mariah's life and each song represents a section. Obsessed is about EVERYONE who tried to pull that crap and different verses represent different people which is why she didn't use names. When you throw a bone into a group of dogs, only the dogs hit will bark. Eminem barked, so did Tommy Mottola, Damizza, and a few others - Nick jokingly said he celebrity stalked her before they wed.
