Archer (SP 17pdr. Valentine) - is Tank destroyer in War Thunder. It's a unique vehicle with fixed gun pointing backwards. In the video review a gameplay on both game modes and basic situations are shown.
The Archer was supposed to be a turreted tank, but when they mounted the 17 pdr, the tank tipped over. The turret was too far forward on the chassis, that's why they turned it into a casemate.
this tank really is the diamond waiting to be discovered. Ive had at most nine kills within a single spawn, and thats just the third game right after unlocking the Archer. Its gun is way ahead of its time(br), and its inmobility moving forward(backward?) prevents you from rushing into inappropriate positions. I've been benefited from that engine placement many times too. This thing has a lot of survivability and with a deadly gun.
and to add on this i actually skipped the Archer when i was climbing the British line. i just happened to pick it up again after getting bored at 6.7 gameplay...
Same. I actually find the Archer fun to play. I find sniping spots from hill tops on the outer edge of the map to cover my team mates. If I spot the enemy first I win. I started playing it when I won a free talisman for the Archer.
Gewel ✔ yes I actually really enjoy the Archer. I’m sometimes top player with it. You have to find good sniping spots. The engine will normally take the hit protecting the tank.
With the Archer I had one of my funniest moments of war thunder history. Basically I was camping a street and suddenly I realize that a panzer III has fkanked me, and I dont know why but instead of shooting me it decided to get closer to me, specifically to my side. I will Never forget the image of me waiting the panzer to get close enough to be able to push the forward mode to past the panzer and put behind without him able to turn fast enough. It ended with a very confused Archer and a Raged and dead panzer
Archer is pretty damned good for bringing up the rear, driving with your team. For capturing points, you don't have to turn around, just cover the lane you took in. However, this is Just when you can trust your team-mates, in other tanks. A lot of the "Tank Destroyers" in this game are really Self Propelled Artillery, and there's really no Bunker Buster gameplay. That's what this is designed for, along with a lot of the German "TDs" like the SU-76M, and Sturmhaubitze. (Assault Howitzer.) Some of them were pressed into service in an Anti-tank role, however, that's not what they were Designed for. So, they're not very well designed for fighting other Armored Vehicles. Except for the Rolling Bunkers.
It's kind of a shame that the American GMC line doesn't start with the M6 Gun Motor Carriage. (Basically American for Self Propelled Gun) Then, Archer would have some company, though it's more of a lightly armored high mobility thing. Basically a Dodge pickup with 37mm gun on the back, but it's no worse than the M1A2 that's nothing but a bunch of machineguns. And a target for 37mm Tank guns.
@@michaelvigil5321 So funny... 90k soldiers died in the Battle of France, with Germans encircling them by passing through Belgium, an "ally" country that never built its part of the fortifications and actually went "neutral" in 1936 when Hitler got into power. "But couldn't they still fight to the last man?" they did that through WW1, losing 1.7 million of people, around 8% of all french male citizens. Every village has a memorial with countless names on it. Sometime there's more names on it, than there is inhabitants now. I'm not sure you realize how much it is - in US equivalent in 2010, that would be losing 12 MILLIONS of americans in a single war. And that's not even counting all the mutilated and wounded soldiers, 4.2 millions of french soldiers. That's 20% of the french male population at that time. US equivalent in 2010 would be 30 millions of mutilated and wounded soldiers. It's always incredible to hear countries that were completely spared from the slaughter of WW1 and the destruction of WW2, making fun of countries that actually endured all that with front-row seats for both, from the trenches to the concentration camps. Always funny to hear how they're cowards without a backbone because they don't celebrate going to war anymore. ... Whenever someone like you make these "jokes", it's not just completely ignorant - the french troops were encircled and didn't retreat, it's the british troops who ran away across the Channel - it's also insulting to the thousands of french soldiers who died fighting Hitler forces in 1940, the thousands of resistance fighters who died fighting them in the following 5 years (many being deported to the death camps), and the thousands of french soldiers of the Free French Force who died fighting the Axis forces in the colonies (starting in 1940, all the way to 1945), Italy and France. The cherry on top is knowing WHO pushed for that "retreating white flag" bullshit revival in the 2000s? Any guess? None other than the neocons of Dick Sheney, simply because France was against the Iraq War and tried to warn its oldest ally the US of A that it was bad idea to invade it, when we weren't finished with Afghanistan yet. SEE HOW GREAT THAT WAR IN IRAQ TURNED OUT: 8 years of aimless war against insurgency, more than a trillion (!) dollars taken from the US taxpayers, 4,491 deaths of americans, and a completely failed Iraq state that gave birth to ISIS. But surely, one can only be a retreating white-flag-waving coward to be against such brilliant project. ... To sum it up, this sort of "joke" makes you: 1) an ignorant of history, 2) disrespectful of hundreds of thousands of french soldiers and resistants who died fighting Hitler, 3) a leftover tool of the neocons to sell the Iraq War to US citizens.
@@TubeofDestiny so i would be allowed to make the "french attack with the barrel over the engine" joke? or this one "who won the first tour de france - the 7.panzerdivision" but i like your yellow vest demonstations - it´s just as good as g20 in hamburg
@@TubeofDestiny you conveniently left out how the fact they were encircled was a result of absolutely abysmal doctrine and the fact that while they had good tank designs they just decided not to build more than a couple. Them losing is not their fault but the fact they were so heavily encircled and lost so fast is.
i did not skip this SPG, as you say it was tricky to use but once you get the hang of it it works really well, horizontal traverse is a little bit anoying being so slow (also mentioned) and being open topped makes you volnerable to planes. Most WT players who skip this SPG simply dont have patience ;)
It's the definition of a balanced tank. The rear facing gun and slow 'reverse' speeds will piss you off to no end, but at the end of the day you have one of the most powerful cannons in the game at 3.3 of all battle ratings.
The Self Propelled 17pdr, Valentine, Mk I, Archer was a British self propelled anti-tank gun of the Second World War based on the Valentine infantry tank chassis fitted with an Ordnance QF 17 pounder gun. Designed and manufactured by Vickers-Armstrongs, 655 were produced between March 1943 and May 1945.
I just love how he said very vurneable to enemy aircraft but if you have played with breda 501 you would feel blessed because you would have at least some protection.
I'm sorry, that's just not correct or precise enough. In WWII, there was a number of categories for AFVs with tracks: tanks, tank destroyers, self-propelled anti-tank guns, self propelled howitzer, and so on. Simply saying 'it has armour, a gun and tracks, therefore it's a tank', just isn't right or specific enough.
The archer is my favorite vehicle. I have a record of hitting a moving target at 1,800 meters with the first shot. The farthest record so far is that it took only 4 shells to kill the M4 at 2,200 meters. (RB)
The T-34-85 is the objective best tank in the game at it's tier bar none. It's also complete brainless especially with the latest tweaks to how it deflects shells making it one of the most broken vehicles in the game as it can bounce 88s point blank and then one-shot the tank that fired them regardless of where it hits.
@@The_Crimson_Fucker If I'm correct, it's at 5.7. In this case, I would have to choose between my Panther A and the 34-85, which is a hard choice. Both are great.
The first thing after parts should always be FPE, no matter what advantages the other modifications provide. Parts and FPE keep you in the fight and especially if you burn often FPE should be the top priority.
I mean archer is not useless against aircrafts. They will never see a 76 mm HE shell flying at them during a straight strafing run. Just ask the unfortunate souls who lost their aircrafts to this beauty
If war thunder would on one day add belgian tanks, you would find yourself with two tankdestroyers with backwards facing guns. The T13 b1 and T13 b2 are essentialy guns mounted on a garden loyd carrier, tho if the side and front armor was folded down, the gun could traverse to all sides. These tanks where made in line with the belgian defence docterine of the armed neutrality. I Think that the begian tanks, whom are such unique, wold give a very special playstyle to war thunder.
The reason the archers gun is backwards because if the gun was put forward, the gun would have to stick out too far out the front to keep the breach in the crew compartment, thus in reverse, this is solved as the barrel can run above the engine and the breach in the crew compartment
Maybe British tier I SPAA with 4 light mg's? I've been able to kill some tanks with it. And also when this thing doesn't move (in rb) enemies aren't able to see you, even when they're right in front of you. Paiting it all pink helps, at least from my experience :)
They should add in the crusader 5.5inch. it also faces backwards. and would be hilarious, imagine rounding a corner to see the long barrel 114.5mm gun facing u.
To be entirely fair, the M1A1 and M1A2 variants of the Abrams are the to this day are among the most advanced mbts that are currently in use with an insane survivability rate and powerful armaments. In their first mass deployment only 8 were lost and they werent even destroyed by the enemy but were scuttled by their crews after the battle because they either got stuck or had significant enough damage to not be worth repairing.
My issue with the archer is that it’s painfully sluggish even reversing. The tank’s pen is far too high and it doesn’t do shit against most opposition of its tier. By the time that gun is relevant there are far better tanks.
Maybe it's too predictable, but I prefer a M10 over an archer, lacks a lot of pen wich forces to be more accurate in weak points it has explosive filler, same cannon IIRC and 0.4 br over (3.7), also it's one of my best ground vehicles in realist and arcade
I actually *like* playing the archer, and got it in my 3.3 british lineup. I always play RB. I don't use it on all maps though, some of them are just poorly suited for that tank destroyer...
Eyy man, just watched your first video now, today! About shell`s. Keep it up and continue to make WT fun ;) have a great day ;) Btw? where do you come from? witch counrty ?
I am trying to grind my british tech tree and I'm on this tere and I can say from experience this tank is good but if you go higher it gets harder to use
for me the ARCHER the only good thing it has is the cannon, the worst thing that the British army could do is to do it on the basis of the VALENTINE, its engine is not good and that implies that its speed is poor.the worst thing is that as you can see the tank has the barrel looking to the rear in the perspective of the VALENTINE and also the tank was obsolete in the same year of production
I thought I was tripping. I just unlocked this and reset the PS4 and everything like wtfv is going on? Why is this thing backwards, and the cinema are opposite.
i'm wondering, why did they put a 17pdr in a valentine? that is like the size of a golf ball or something. could it be in a bigger chasis like cromwell (oh wait challenger), or churchill
Its a bitch and a half to operate. Overkill for its tier in terms of gun. And just a huge handicap in most contemporary situations other than maps with sniping positions just outside your base.
Use this thing to stop counterattacks on Poland. Camp out in the North East and just wait for them to push the northmost point. Just remember to displace from time to time.
Archer no idea worst or best worst not this game british idea tank? The drive is backwards is possible kill gun backwards slow mobile from gun drive backward, best to escape or Escape plan (lol) idk this to Enemy ready to shoot you or bomber
