Always on the hour Lübeck central station is a transport hub for the regional traffic of Schleswig-Holstein (federal state of Germany). The trains depart for Hamburg and Travemünde, normally consisting of Stadler KISS double deck EMUs, and for Kiel, Lüneburg and Neustadt in Holstein as well. So far the latter trains consisted of class 648 Diesel multiple units (DMUs). Some lines are operated by Erixx Holstein. This company has operated so far with DMUs that were lent for a limited time from DB Regio. Most DMUs are painted in red, some with a blue stripe along the roof. On the evening of November 4, 2023, 2 of the new battery-electric multiple units (BEMUs) Stadler FLIRT Akku, class 526, were in service as regional express train to Kiel.
The train arrives with pantographs down. Then batteries are recharged with power drawn from the overhead wires. Batteries are said to be partly mounted on the roof, partly under the floor of the vehicles. During charging a slightly shrill noise can be heard. When charging is finished the pantographs are lowered again.
The new livery for regional trains in Schleswig-Holstein is a combination of light and dark blue. It is now also introduced on regional buses and on ticket machines.
Always on the half hour you can also go to Hamburg using regional express line RE 80, and there is also a regional train to Kiel.
