Even as a huge Limp Bizkit fan for years and years I have to agree to some extent that Fred is the flaw of the band. He's the one who made them that popular undeniably, for good and bad, but the rest is masters of their instruments. Even with that tho, I need to say that LB needs to be taken with a grain of salt, they were never meant to be "serious" except their debut release, which is still the best imo. I gladly listen to the Bizkit tho, they've been a part of my life and helped me through some rough shit and I'll never forget that. I'm slowly starting to grow away from them tho, but still love the music and listen to it from time to time. I did when I was 13 and I'm doing it now when I'm 23.

JimmyKingster I am 36 and still enjoy this album. I remember when it cam out, right when I was out of highschool and me and my friends also got big into Significant Other. I agree that Durst is the kinda low point to this band.....but could you actually hear the same songs with someone else as the frontman? I can't. Besides that observation, it can go without saying that Wes, Otto and Sam are all incredibly talented musicians and along with DJ Lethal they bring a level of atmosphere to their songs that would just be standard NuMetal in the hands of anyone else. I have not heard anything past this album and I also have never heard their first album either but I think Significant Other and Chocolate Flavored Water.....were lightning in a bottle for that time period and for me, still hold up to this day.
@MacanWigit
@MacanWigit 7 лет назад
I am not ashamed that the first time I grab the mic on stage was to do LB cover back in middle school with the baggy pants and red cap. Three Dollar Bill Y'all and Significant Others were great albums and I would argue for hours to defend them, sadly I can't say the same about Chocolate Starfish. This is probably their most known album and as a fan I lament that. The band released better material before (and arguably later). As a vocalist I learned a lot from Fred, especially about how to carry the crowd, to build energy, to sound convincing even though you can't sing to save your life. But the most precious lesson I learned from Fred is what things not to do and what lyrics not to write.

I like Limp Bizkit. They're a good band. And I mean all of them. Even Fred Durst. They wouldn't be Limp Bizkit without Fred Durst. Wes Borland's an incredibly creative guitar player who uses his guitar in unique ways. Rivers, Otto and Lethal (ex-Limp Bizkit) are all talented. The shit that Durst gets is a bit too much. He's not some opera singer but he can sing melodically. He can rap, scream, sing with a strong rasp etc. He's good at what he does and it suits Limp Bizkit. He can write intelligent lyrics and silly fun lyrics as well. I like every album that Limp Bizkit's put out. I also like Nickelback and Creed. I also like Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Dire Straits, Norah Jones, Celine Dion, Hoobastank, Trivium, Lamb Of God, Bach, and John Williams. All kinds of music. There is good nu metal, but most of it came from the first wave (1994-99). The nu metal I like is the weird and experimental stuff from bands like korn, sepultura (roots), early deftones, early soulfly, coal chamber, SOAD, early slipknot, drowning pool, and even early bizkit. Nu metal turned shitty when it became frat boy music and when it started playing on wwe, ecw, nfl etc. It turned shitty when people mixed it with post-grunge.

Just goes to show you, nobody truly hates Limp Bizkit. We all just hate Fred Durst, lol. Alot of this album actually has true potential if it wasn't for his constant complaining and "rap" attempts. But don't get me wrong though. They were one of my top 5 bands back then, with this particular album being in my top 3. If I had to think, my top 5 bands and albums back then (in no order) were Limp Bizkit - Choco Starfish, Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory, Sum 41 - All Killer No Filler, Korn - Issues, and Disturbed - The Sickness.

I like limp bizkit because of the instrumentation and even though their lyrics aren’t the best. They’re still fun and very catchy to me. Even though Fred is a douche, I don’t let a members action’s cloud up my thoughts of a band like a lot of other people do.
@CrashThompson
@CrashThompson 9 лет назад
Dude, I think you nailed it pretty well here! Borland was able to create some very catchy riffs and choruses and Sam Rivers is killing it on the bass on this album. Hell even John Otto's drums are punchy and varied enough to keep things interesting. There are some really decent songs buried in this album. It's just too bad they're completely soured by Fred "46-fucks-IS-NOT-ENOUGH-FUCKS" Durst. It's a shame that such talented musicians had no better option that to latch on to this sinking ship. The rest of this band really did have potential, and I think that's what a lot of people saw in them. That's why we tolerated Durst's "wah-wah" bullshit for so long. There was actually a pretty good band beneath all of the gimmicky garbage, but the gimmicky garbage was what always seemed to rise to the top with these guys. Back in the day I would have LOVED to see these guys pull an Alter Bridge and try something with a vocalist that didn't have his head buried so far up his own ass that he he could create a Fibonacci Sequence with his intestinal tract. Separate from Durst's worst qualities there is a band worth remembering and celebrating here... But Durst was always the key figure to this band, so doing that is pretty much an impossibility. Ugh... Seriously though, excellent work with this episode. Sincerely looking forward to more. Cheers!

"Why did this sell so well?" Our parents hated the band, and that is what drove us to seek it out even more. Kids couldn't tell the difference between complaining, and insight and simply saw Fred as this voice of the non-conformist Y2K generation, much like Cobain was in the early 1990's. Only we were to naive to really see the lyrics as anything other than empty complaints and angst.

- Regarding the chocolate starfish thing, Fred Durst called himself that because that's what a lot of people were reffering to him as: "An asshole." - The riping off from Nine Inch Nails was not just they being lazy, it was Fred Durst retaliating, because Trent Reznor had talked crap about Limp Bizkit a few times in the past. He also got credited (whether he liked it or not) for lyrics on Hot Dog. - Fred Durst did provide backup vocals, but the main vocalist on "Hold On" was actually Scott Weiland.
@ciredark

Durst had to actually pay royalties to Reznor for using the amount of lyrics he did. What was originally intended as a "diss" ended up putting money in the targets pocket. That's how dumb Fred Durst is.

ciredark "That's how dumb Fred Durst is." Yeah do you know how much money the band probably made off starting controversy? The entertainment industry does stuff like this all the time. Sure they had to pay but they probably made a profit off of it.

I personally think why Chocolate Starfish and Results May Vary sold so well, is just because of the success of Significant Other. Limp Bizkit became a easily recognisable band after significant other, and I’m guessing Fred knew this album was gonna sell well because the name Limp Bizkit was in the album cover so he didn’t care about the name It’s like Limp Bizkit could make the most offensive album of all time and it would still sell millions of copies Like for example in the early 2000's let’s say Fred would write the most derogatory lyrics you can think of and it would sell like a Tool album So early 2000's logic, if it has Limp Bizkit associated it will sell like a atomic bomb in Japan

Being a massive Limp Bizkit fan, I can get behind a lot of things you're saying... But Limp Bizkit being in the same Triforce of suckage with Creed and Nickleback? Come on. Puddle of Mudd deserves that spot, at least. Limp Bizkit created an amazing album with Three Dollar Bill, and though I enjoy parts of Starfish, I know it's not a -great- album. It might not even be a good album. But... Come on. This over Good Charlotte?
@ThierryRocksTV

@LMC-xz6qh
@LMC-xz6qh 8 лет назад
+Mr Red Good Charlotte is not thaaat bad, at least their most recent albums aren't. Also, Limp Bizkit is probably the most hated band in the world along with Nickelback, which is another reason to incluide them. They're way more relevant than Good Charlotte in that sense. Also, Fred Durst is a pathetic manchild, and Wes Borland is a douchebag as well
@mrred773
@mrred773 8 лет назад
xHeavenHelpUsAll7771x But he puts on that guise by choice. Limp Bizkit is a mockery of the stereotypes that nu metal and rap bring to mind. Fred is a down to earth person, at least in interviews... He might not be one of the most amazing musicians out there, but I dare say that he has my respect, because he does believe in promoting music he sees as good. Plus, let's look at it this way: He says he isn't conforming, and on the surface he's definately conforming to a lot. But look at how much strange stuff they do. With not only the experimentation of Borland, but the repulsive and malignant lyricism of Fred. Fred is a provokator, and his way of not conforming is by making people hate his guts and by making music that very few people appreciate. So... You're letting Fred have the last laugh by hating on him.
@LMC-xz6qh
@LMC-xz6qh 8 лет назад
Mr Red I don't really care about who has the last laugh, also he has it since the moment he became a millionaire. Also, I don't think his objective is to make music very few people appreciate. I mean, Limp Bizkit sold millions of records worldwide and play at sell out venues for thousands of people. If he wanted to make music very few people would appreciate, he would have turned into a harsh noise guy
@mrred773
@mrred773 8 лет назад
xHeavenHelpUsAll7771x But listen to the pure, ironic vapidity of Chocolate Starfish's lyrics. His lyricism on those tracks is terrible, the first song on the album is just a bunch of swears. That deters the metal audiences, because it's - let's face it, it's stupid. And then there is the metal side of things, which is some pretty strong nu metal if you ask me. But it's still metal - Metal doesn't appeal to a mass audience, so the mainstream audiences don't like it all that much. Mean sure some might, but they're a minority. And so, it sorta... Sorta comes down to the minority who actually liked them, the kids. They were edgy, silly, mindless fun, just what the millenial doctors ordered. They bought the album, made Limp Bizkit famous, and even though they were a minority, they were still relatively large. And bam, new metalheads were created, as well as Fred's empire. I'm not saying they're good, because musical taste is based on what it makes you feel - its subjective. I like them, but I know they aren't liked. But lemme say that Limp Bizkit created new metalheads at a time when metal was starting to wane - the mid to late 90's. So they inspired legions of new people who listened to more metal. Like it or not, Limp Bizkit are an important part of metal. Then again, I'm probably rambling. You're probably right that they aren't a band about making music few people will appreciate... But I think they're a band about not conforming, not even to metalhead ideals. For that I have to respect them.

When this album released I was in like 11th grade I think, and almost every kid at my school had this album. Kids with cars would aimlessly drive around town blaring the fuck out of it to let everyone know what a badass they were. Since pretty much all teens are whiny little shits who complain constantly and just enjoy being all-around annoying assholes, it becomes clear why this album so well. I also used to be an angsty special snowflake and had some great nights of getting high and a bit drunk while cursing around with a few good friends. This album is nostalgic and has a hidden track at the end with Durst talking with Ben Driller while smoking some weed (or they implied they were anyway). We used to laugh like idiots while getting high ourselves, learning the term coined by Stiller called "Limpin' with the Bizkit" among other shit. This cringy-ass album might be a joke these days, but it still holds a ton on of nostalgic value.

Fred durst is just the only part that really sells because of the look. Bear with me, I'm going somewhere: There's this mashup creator on RU-vid named Triple-Q. He does a lot of mashups of various genres, often mixing ones that have nothing to do with each other. He got together last year with a bunch of other mashup people to create an album from the Kill La Kill soundtrack. It was called Cut, Paste, And Kill. It's free to download right now. Anyway, one track, "New World SymPONPONPON" starts out as a generic anime theme mashup. In fact, it uses all of the bog-standard songs used in anime mashups to death. It's light and bubbling and poppy and all that...and then the song grinds to a halt, and Rollin' starts up. Yes, the latter half of this song is a complete 180 into hard rock, set to the score of Rollin'. And except for a little posturing during the windup, Fred Durst is almost completely absent. It's just the background track, with the likes of Drowning Pool and Rob Zombie(!) sharing the vocal track with the vocals from the Kill La Kill ending theme. And it's glorious. Or at least it takes the best part of any Limp Bizkit song - the non-vocals - and lets it carry the work. Go check it out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E2zB1CtZ19c.html
