Removing a bad Plasti dip job from a Cadillac CTSV

so.... this video is just you cleaning the car. Love the style of your videos. and thank you for not putting generic music on your videos.

Look at the narrow horizontal stripes on the hood and it's immediately obvious this car was sprayed with aerosol cans. Anyone with common sense knows spraying a car with aerosols is going to lead to a disaster - in both the finish and removal. Dip Dissolver and a pressure washer would have made quick work of this mess. Not at all a representation of what a proper dipped car looks, feels, or peels like.

We had a Hotsy, that was old as dirt, pressure washer at the heavy equipment shop I worked at, it had wooden handles for the wand because it would get over 200 degrees. It was adjustable for pressure and temp I used it to peel the paint off machines we refurbed to prep for paint. Looks like the optimal solution for this, adjust so as not to peel the factory paint off and go to work, 5 minutes later no ugly plasti-dip.

I had a friend buy a mid 90's Ford pickup from an auction that a previous owner tried applying one of those do-it-yourself bed liner kits on the floor and sides of the box to. It looked horrible! My friend decided it needed removed right away and redone. We tried several different removal methods before hitting upon a heat gun and chisels. Spent almost a full day on it but were finally able to remove that nasty coating. Even poorly applied bed liner is some tough stuff!

In the event you don't want to go through the trouble of removing it, try spraying some mineral spirits on the entire surface and let it dry. It will re-liquefy the rubber a bit (or a lot, depending on how much you put on) and even out the finish. Despite all the downsides, that's one good thing about plastidip versus paint - you can re-do and repair a botched job very simply. Though ultimately it still won't look as good as paint.

Looked good! I liked the cloning. And don't forget, ripped clothing is in style now. A new pair of pants like you had one are probably $100! lol

A friend of mine used to have a gray truck, with black wheels. The truck was painted with a roller & tractor paint, & the wheels were Plasti-dipped!

Scott, I have never seen a good reason to be making a good looking vehicle ugly on purpose. I agree with your statement about that: don't do that! Glad that you have a new computer.

Still better than the continental i bought at auction about 10 years ago. It was covered top to bottom in rubberized undercoating. It took 2 gallons of laquer thinner and about a week to get it off the car.

But there are people who would pay top dollar for pants with holes already in them, just look around they actually paid for those pants with holes in them. Great videos, keep up the good work. By the way i am a Ford guy, but I have owned several different brands of cars in my lifetime. My present weekend car is a 2017 GT convertible that I purchased new instead of rebuilding one. The only time I had to have my 71 Mustang towed was when I came home from vacation.. While i was away my little brother "borrowed" my car and left me with an empty gas tank. I parked it with a full tank so why would I have checked the fuel gauge? I even went to the GM school in Dedham Mass. in the early 1970's when I worked for an Oldsmobile dealer.

That seems exactly like peeling the plastic off the trim for metal buildings. When it gets sun soaked its comes off in pieces. We usually give that job to the new guy.

I plasti dip trim or use it on low parts of vehicles and lay it on super thick. I then finish it off with some clear coat and it's very very durable.

have you try peeling plasti dip with air compressor, use long sharp point plastic nozzle, stuck it below the dip at center of one panel and blow it like a baloon

I bought a $200 98 Cherokee a few years ago. Had probably $180 worth of black plastidip on it. And done poorly. Only way to "fix" it was cover it up with more dip. Did a nice gray/blue 2 tone with it. And I drove it for 2 years and made a profit on it.

Figured this video wasn't done recently if you were out in your shirt sleeves in northern IL considering how cold it's been down here in southern IL. Seeing how nice that car looked after you got done compared to how it was before, you'd think whoever put that stuff on would've realized it was a bad idea as soon as they started and quit right then.

The square in the dip is like me with balls of electrical tape when wiring cars. If i find a ball of wrapped wires i know its not going to be be good lol

Mineral spirits and an old credit card works too, just wash the car thoroughly after you're done, especially any rubber seals or trim as it may discolor or swell.

I had my 10 yr. old son run the hair dryer while I peel the plastidip off my vehicle. I had it all off in about 2 hours. He totally earned that DQ blizzard that day. LOL

We have a guy retiring from my FD today actually, and has a few pairs of Holy pants that he usually has to wear another pair underneath lol

Plastidip also starts to get hard with age, also adding to the difficulty in peeling it. Sigh. Goo gone is the best at loosening it, but its still a nightmare to remove.

Hopefully you will get the afternoon crew back to spread chalk dust on future projects, although just wondering what’s going on with the Ford Mustang build....

I dip sprayed my 33 year old bumpers and it came out pretty good. The mirrors came out OK, not great. 2 years later and it's starting to peel like sunburn. But it comes off easy with silicone spray.

I repossessed a 2015 Porsche Macan S that was white covered with a black Plasti-dip. The surface was jagged and undulating with varying amounts of sheen and reflection. Ugh...

I don’t think I have ever seen a plastidip car that was well done or looked good. It is almost always never applied thick enough. And when it is applied right it looks like tree bark! Great find.

I am not a fan of the plasti dip myself ,so how do you feel about the clear bra which protects you cars paint from being chipped by rocks and whatever else.

Have a look into Halo EFX coating. You will be happy. Great finish ans easy to remove.

You got lucky!! I got a cobalt that had this stuff on there but it would chip away and wouldnt peel off, i tried all kinds of harsh chemicals to try and melt it away and nothing worked! I gave up and busted out the sander and sanded the car back down to bare metal and spray painted it! after wet sand and buff it didnt look too bad! I'll take a smooth rattle can paint job over rough feeling dirty plasty dip anyday! #NeverAgain
