Replace a Leaking Toilet Flush Valve

Fix a running toilet by replacing the Flush Valve. This toilet was running on and off all day long, wasting gallons and gallons of water a day. The culprit was not the usual suspect on a broken toilet, the fill valve; the problem was the flush valve. Water was leaking past the flapper on the flush valve causing the fill valve to need to top off the water level all day long.
Toilet Flush Repair Kit: amzn.to/1OuQbXC
The flush valve on this toilet was replaced with a universal fit, 3 inch flush valve. This universal flush valve fit nicely and was a near direct replacement. The flush valve was purchased at Home Depot for around $13. There is another style of universal flush valve available that is more adaptable to different toilets.
Tools & Supplies needed on this repair:
- flat head screw driver
- 14mm or 9/16th wrench
- pipe wrench
- something to clean the toilet
- universal fit 3" flush valve

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! As a 67 year old woman I wasn’t sure I could do it, but with your excellent instructions I got it done. 🎉

The black hose should be in the fill tube, not outside. That’s what fills the toilet bowl. The fill valve ( the part that floats up and down) is what fills the tank.

Very good video. I followed each step but the water didn't come out after I turned it on. Actually there were some leaks so I turned off the water, tightened the bolts and gasket. No more leak but turning on water didn't get any more water.

I have one of those actuator valves in my American Standard and the darn thing leaks constantly. I was replacing the big gasket on the end of the actuator when I noticed a small crack at the base of the fill tube. Guess I know what needs replacing now. Thanks for the video. How snug should the bolts between tank and toilet be? I've built toilets before and that part always makes me nervous as I don't want to tighten so much that the tank cracks and not enough that it wobbles and leaks.

Shouldn't the water tube go inside the overflow tube else you will have a dry bowl after each flush? I think you need to clip the water tube on the other side of the overflow tube with the water tube inside the overflow.
@ChrisIrwinProfile
@ChrisIrwinProfile 8 лет назад
+richk3c I noticed the same thing. I tried it on my toilet with the tube on the outside of the overflow. The tank fills up faster, and there is less water in the bowl. But it isn't dry.
@jeffw8057
@jeffw8057 4 года назад
Yes, the fill tube should be aimed into the overflow tube for proper flushing.
@ldeg9876
@ldeg9876 4 года назад
I was confused also about this. So I stuck my hand in the water. Water going into the tank is coming from the base of the fill valve (you can't see the water flow in), so it doesn't need water from the hose. The water coming out of the hose therefore can go into the overflow tube which goes straight into the bowl so bowl fills with water after bowl empties, and at the same time the tank is filling up. Thanks for mentioning the dry bowl comment. Oh yeah, the overflow tube prevents overflow in tank also.
@jonpitts1978
@jonpitts1978 Год назад
no you want the freaking water will keep running untill the bowl and tank are full makes no difference whatsoever
@bevjane7245
@bevjane7245 Год назад
@@jonpitts1978 the tube is supposed to go inside standpipe aka overflow; water from standpipe washes the bowl via all the little holes around bowl rim. If you pour water with food coloring into standpipe (use funnel and have toilet seat up so you can see what goes on in the bowl) you will see the colored water stream down from bowl ring into bowl.

After I did everything in your video I have a new issue. Instead of a continuous slow leak my new fill valve will just let more water in. I swapped out my old valve to one similar to the one installed here. It was during that when my overflow tube shattered which made replacing the flush valve necessary. This is my first time replaceing the flush valve so I'm unfamiliar with what I need to troubleshoot.

The rubber water line that Clips onto the Overflow pipe is on backwards the water is supposed to go inside of the tube it helps flushes out waste and refilled the toilet bowl. The water that fills the tank comes in near the bottom of the fill valve.

I had to replace mine due to phantom-fills. I tried new flappers, 3 different types and all still leaked. Then I tried replacing the whole flush valve assy by Korky. It leaked and phantom-filled. Then I tried replacing the whole flush valve assy by FluidMaster. It also leaked and phantom-filled, not as often. For the third assy replacement, I used the Kohler Cylinder style, Lowes Item #1451938 Model #RGP1188998. Never phantom-fills! The only issue is you have hold the flush lever till the flush completes. The nice issue is that it takes very little effort to push the flush lever.

Why wouldn't you position the overflow tube at 12: o'clock in relationship to the two mounting bolts at 6 and 3 o'clock? That would place the pull chain more perpendicular to the flapper improving its efficiency and reducing side load.
@OCC_Plumbing_and_Restorations
@OCC_Plumbing_and_Restorations 4 года назад
It doesn't really matter. I have installed them at all different angles.
@michaelhirsch6675
@michaelhirsch6675 4 года назад
It should be oriented so that the pull chain pulls the flapper straight up as to prevent the flapper from dragging sideways. Sideways pulls cause undo wear.
@garythomas418
@garythomas418 2 года назад
@@michaelhirsch6675 agreed. You want the chain to be as vertical as possible. Mine was off vertical, so the flapper was pulled off center and caused the toilet to keep running occasionally- maybe one out of 10 or 20 flushes when the flapper was not covering the hole completely. Therefore, I would position the new flush valve so the flapper chain is directly under your flush lever- before tightening up the new flush valve.

Thanks to the author of this video who supplied excellent and specific instructions (because I will need them!😂). I only hope I can pull this off without causing a bigger problem than what I started. Actually, I think this was the primary problem. I just couldn't see it until it completely broke off. Thanks so much. Guess I'll find out tomorrow!

... and not a word about a new flapper that only partly corrects a slow leak/refill problem No word about getting a good seal with 'plumber's grease' between the new flapper and the throat of the tank drain... That problem is very common and if a DIYer knows what to do, he can stop the leaking and the job is done. But no word how to spot it or likely causes or how to remedy the leaking/refilling ....

@paulwatson7534
@paulwatson7534 4 года назад
Do you leave poo in your toilet? I don't! You have to flush the toilet to get the water out of the tank so there won't be any poo. If you have poophobia they make rubber gloves. But if you remain lazy, and continue to shut the valve off you have a pretty good chance of falling face first into the bowl! LMAO
