This is part 2 or a 4 part series on replacing the thru hulls on a Lagoon 38 catamaran.
In Part 2 of the seacock replacement I glass in some holes left from over from thru hulls that are no longer needed. In Part 1 I removed the old thru hulls and in part 3 I show what I did to prepare to install all the new parts including making fiberglass backing plates, and finally in part 4 I show how I installed all the new hardware. I hope someone can take something useful from these. If it helps please hit "like" and please subscribe to see my upcoming videos. Be sure to check out my other sites as well

Cap. Wane, Thanks very much for your useful videos. I just subscribed to your channel. I'm a yacht broker from Turkey and have my own RU-vid channel. I just bought my own sailing yacht - Peterson 34 / 1980 that was built in Texas. Her previous owner sailed her all the way east crossing the Atlantic to... ISRAEL ..where I bought her...I'm now in an intensive refit works and found your videos very good. Cheers!

Great videos! I'm following your instructions, both replacing some thru-hulls and glassing some unneeded ones. Please identify the "putty" you mention. Is it like Bondo?

Oops -- found it: "vinyl ester filler P75 made by Adtech." Thank you for your patience.

Surely I am not seeing it, but at 12:36 you say "putty" What type of material is this? Thank you for your excellent channel!

In this video, you mention a "12:1 ratio" with diagram. Is this the ratio of the diameter of the hole left from the seacock vs. the diameter of the entire grinding area? E.g., If the hole to be glassed in is 1", is the diameter of the area of preparation (grinding) 12"?
@Boatingzen
@Boatingzen 7 лет назад
The 12 to 1 is the bevel angle. Meaning if the glass is 1 inch thick the bevel would be 12 inches wide. Hope that helps and thanks for asking

It does help! I'm trying this out on a removed above-the-waterline thru-hull first, but the circular area I'm grinding looks bigger than it seems on the video. Thanks!!

Can you provide some details on the "putty" you used just before the gelcoat please?
@Boatingzen

It was an Adtech product, cannot remember the product number. This is not a common product and it is mostly used by pros

Using polyester resin, did you apply gel coat or PVA so it could cure? I've heard polyester only can cure in an oxygen-free environment, and thus a layer of gel coat or PVA is applied, and then removed.

Most GP resin has wax added to help with surface cure. Without it the resin will cure but the surface remains tacky. PVA is most often used with wax free gelcoat although you can buy gelcoat with wax or get the wax additive separate. Thanks for the question

Hi, what type of filler putty was used in this project?
@Boatingzen
@Boatingzen 7 лет назад
If I recall correctly it was a vinyl ester filler P75 made by Adtech. This is a really good product for general filling above and below the waterline. More UV stable than epoxies, Thanks for the comment and watching

Have heard that polyester will not stick as well, even to old polyester, as epoxy. What is your experience?
@Boatingzen
@Boatingzen 8 лет назад
This is complicated but in general I like to repair with the same material the boat was built with to maintain consistency. A properly prepared repair will be just fine with polyester. There is no chemical bond with either once cured so both are a mechanical bond. Thanks for the comment and asking

polyester second bonding is very poor. anybody who does glassing knows this. never use polyester to rebond. use vinylester or epoxy. i wouldnt be asking glassing advice from a guy who doesnt wear a mask when he applies resin or sands fibreglass. what an idiot.

How do U get a real broken seacock out so it can be replaced??

Hi Leonard, I am not sure I understand the question. Did you watch part one where I remove the seacock for this project? Maybe you could be a bit more specific and I will try to help. Thanks

You placed duct tape across the inside to keep FG a resin from pushing through...and then it was gone and you started from the inside. ????

I do not recall but I am guessing it had more to do with how it was edited.

Sorry, I think I phrased it badly. You put tape across the inside of the thru hull hole. Why did you do so? To keep dust from coming into the engine room? Your video showed putting the tape in an X across the hole but didn’t say or show why you did it. Thanks!
@Boatingzen
@Boatingzen 6 лет назад
Yes to keep dust out.

Thanks Wayne. I really enjoy the videos. Getting ready to pull my 42' trawler this weekend and one fo the tasks is through hulls and strainers. Keep them coming!

The title should say Removing... not replacing... I was getting totally confused watching all the work you were going though.

+Wayne Canning it's true... this is the first video that came up when I searched replacing a seacock... it would make sense to label it removing or deleting. anyhow :) I subscribed, you seem to know what your doing around boats ! -Chad

Correct is incorrect. Poor bond to existing substrate. Incorrect is almost correct. Just add a final overlapping layer over top. "Incorrect/Correct" = arrogance.

West Epoxy's video also says to do it the way that was marked as 'incorrect' in this video, with the largest piece first
