The King of Restorative Yoga, Legs up the Wall pose is perfect to take when you're feeling high on stress and low on energy. Pair it with this guided relaxation and experience deep rest. If you're pregnant, have high blood pressure or serious eye conditions, like glaucoma, or have neck or back problems it's best to sit this pose out and opt to practice the guided relaxation in the basic relaxation pose, aka Corpse pose or Savasana, and for mamas-to-be, rest on your side not your back. Enjoy xo
Don't forget to comment below, feel free to ask questions and let me know how I can help you grow a more consistent yoga and mindfulness practice. Thanks for practicing with me xx Kris

hi Kris... i just started doing this 3 days ago, daily. I hadn't exercised regularly for a long time and just started again. My body felt stiff and tired. When I did this legs up the wall exercise, I feel so much tiredness in my legs, and towards the end I felt a lot of emotions such anger and frustration came up, which I allowed to flow out of me. I did this exercise before when my TCM doctor put a wooden plank perpendicular to one leg at a time, after some time it made me want to scream. I'm surprised at the intensity of the emotions that wanted to come out, so i know that on top of all the benefits mentioned from doing this exercise, it's also great for emotional release. I would love to hear your take on this emotional release and wondered if you ever experienced something like that. Now that I'm doing this a few days in a row, I'm welcoming the sensations and emotions experienced during the 20 minutes that I do it, and trust that they're all part of the process towards healing and restoration. I'm a life coach specializing on emotional wholeness btw, and will use this exercise to help my clients release blockages. Thanks for the explanation and demonstrating the safe way to do it. :-)

Thought your roll into the pose was very cool! Greatly appreciated info. It would be great if someone might per chance do a vid on my accupressure procedure using just clothes pins on ears and face for relief of stress, headaches and detox. This is a very inexpensive and practically anyone could procure.Sounds mildly ridiculous but it is extremely effective! Necessity is the mother of all inventions.... Anyway nice roll into pose. ✌

Hi Nini, I wasn't able to reply to your comment directly, so I hope you find your way back here and see that I've replied. Yes, you absolutely can use a warming pillow under the neck, and lavender is a dream for a calming effect. What a great idea with the blankets...I tend to pile them on too as I get cold quickly. Typically you practice the pose for 5 minutes and build up as it feels appropriate to you. In this pose that usually means coming out before or when your feet become tingly or start to fall asleep. 30 minutes is fine as long as you feel okay in it. I usually set a timer and stay in it for 20-30 minutes. And it provides a lot of relief for the neck especially with a blanket or towel roll under the neck. Hope that answers your question! Thanks for writing in xo, kris

Welcome to the channel, Henry. I'm really glad you're here. I wonder if it might feel good to try doing this with your legs bent, resting your calves and feet on the couch, a chair or depending on the height, maybe your bed? I've been finding it's easier for me to get into that shape and I can relax more with my legs bent.

When I do this pose, I have to wear many layers, have one blanket draped from my feet over my legs and another blanket over my torso. But, when I'm warm I find I'm able to hold the pose a long time. Would there be any disadvantage to the thing to raise the neck/head being one of those microwavable rice or bean warming pillows? I have a lavendar scented one I like.

Hi . I was told about this possession to calm down my heart. I complain about my heart and I've been seen for my heart and have had many exams done and keep coming negative! I keep on getting told its just anxiety and have trouble sleeping at night. I need to know if this possession is really helpful for me. I mean I dont wanna keep feeling bad as in sick of my heart or watever the deal is. But its its Anxiety that I Just have can this reallt help my anxiety . By the way I have never done yoga but I really wanna get into it for the problems I've been experiencing.
@practicewithkris
@practicewithkris 8 лет назад
+Roberto Medina Hi Roberto. Thanks for reaching out. It's hard to say because I'm not a doctor nor do I know what exactly is going on with your heart. If you'd like you can share more info with me, and i can return a more informed response. but if it's anxiety then yes, I believe Yoga can be a powerful tool. I actually came to yoga because of stress and anxiety and have found it to be extremely helpful in reducing and managing both. This specific posture can be very helpful for calming the nervous system, and I would encourage you to practice it if your doctor says it's okay. I also think it can be more stressful when we place expectations on ourselves and even our yoga practice. I suggest trying some of the video practices that are focused on reducing stress and see how those feel for you but try to let go of expecting an immediate result because that can sometimes put too much pressure on ourselves when this is about relaxing. I also recommend finding a teacher nearby that you could see in person as you start out if that feels right to you. Hope this helps. Sending you love, Kris

For some reason, after performing this pose I get real tired, why I prefer to do this before bedtime
@practicewithkris
@practicewithkris 8 лет назад
+Woodley St. Jean makes a lot of sense to be tired afterwards since this pose activates your rest and digest parasympathetic nervous system. i love doing this before bed, too. you may want to try elevating the hips on a low folded blanket and making sure the chest is broad and open rather than collapsed and see if you feel different afterwards. if you experiment with that variation, i'd love to hear how it goes for you. thanks for reaching out!

Ma'am, should I practice this only for 5 ms in the beginning, as my body is fat, I am 51 years age, and have a very stiff and rigid body, as it is been more than a year, since I last exercised? And I can't do it with my hips flush against the wall, as I am so stiff and rigid, I can only do it with some space between the wall and buttocks. Also I have 3 mild bulging discs in my lower spinal cord, is it safe for me to do this pose? And I have noticed also, that if I do this pose for more than 5 minutes, my legs start aching, why is that? Will it lessen with time and practice? This is still my 2nd day of practice.
@practicewithkris

I'm so sorry that I'm just seeing your questions now. Thank you for reaching out and for sharing your experience. Based on what you've shared, I'd say the version where you lay on your back and rest your calves on a couch or chair, the knees will be bent about 90 degrees but doesn't have to be exact, just find what feels comfortable. Hope that helps if it's still relevant. I'd be so curious to hear from you.

hi kris, for how long shd v do this pose ? iz it safe for low BP patientz
@practicewithkris
@practicewithkris 10 лет назад
Hi Omar, good question. With restorative poses it's good to start slowly and gradually add more time in the pose as it feels comfortable. I'd try it out for a few minutes and see how it feels. It's common for the legs to "fall asleep" or become tingly and then you can bend the knees. Then start to add a minute until eventually you stay in the pose anywhere from 5-20 minutes. For low back pain, it depends. The pose can offer relief or it could be uncomfortable. Try it out and see how it feels. If it doesn't feel good, try the same pose but bend your knees at 90 degree angle and rest calves on a chair - that variation is very good for low back. Hope that helps get you started! Lmk how it goes, and thanks for reaching out!
@practicewithkris
@practicewithkris 10 лет назад
Oh goodness, Omar I must be tired today. Just realized you meant blood pressure not back pain :p Yes, the pose is great for regulating blood pressure - good to do for both high and low BP.

thanks for sharing where you're at. to answer your question, i'd say yes, this would be a very helpful pose to do to lower stress and helps us downshift into a more relaxed state. however, with any of these, the results can be individual. i'd recommend noticing how u feel after being in the pose for a few minutes. if the results feel positive, continue to practice it and add some more time. i appreciate you reaching out, and i wish you relief from the chronic illness. you're welcome to reach out to me on email - practicewithkris@gmail.com if you'd like more help. with love, kris

Hi Lydia, no this isn't the best pose for pregnancy, particularly in the last trimester. You're better off in a side savasana posture. How far along are you? And are you new to yoga or do you have a pretty established practice? Both answers will help determine modifications that are best suited for you. Thanks for your question.

you can try rocking your hips side to side using your upper arms and elbows for some support. you can also try to get your hips as close to the wall as you can before rolling onto your back and extending legs up. also, it's less important how close you are and more important that you're comfortable in that position, that you can relax in it without feeling strain in the legs or anywhere else. hope that helps!
