One of the things I love about this program is that it's for "ordinary" people esp. older folks as opposed to programs that seem tailor made for younger stronger people. Seeing videos focusing on older participants is truly inspiring and gives me something to show my parents by way of motivation. Age is no limit! Thanks for posting this!

Full respect. Many people our age shy away from doing something new, especially weight training but she conquered her fears and is succeeding I'm 61 and squatting 120 kg, no athlete but not afraid to give it a go.

I wish there were more Starting Strength gyms around the country. My friends wife just joined a Crossfit gym in Sussex County NJ. After one session her back was sore for three days and she said she almost vomited too. It's sad that common sense workouts like these aren't gaining enough traction. I'm very happy Pat. Hope she updates with more improvements.

Awesome! I've had two conversations this morning with men over 50 complaining about their arthritis and joint pain. I did my best to convince them they need to get started moving the barbell around. I know that my knees and back are in so much better condition than before!

I used to live near Pat... and just stumbled across this. Whoa! Years ago, I bumped into her just after she had deadlifted 100kg for the first time. She was so pumped and I was blown away. Like damn! that is way more than I can lift and she is tiny. She later went on to win her age category in the Singapore Power Lifting Open in 2017 where she set records in squat (70kg), bench press (37.5kg), deadlift (115kg) and total (222.5kg) for the women's Under-52kg Master 3 category (age 60 to 69).

I am about to be 63. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017, after surgery to remove prostate I have been on testosterone suppression for almost 2 straight years. I don't have Low T, I have No T. I started a program like this 8/3/2019, beginning with an empty bar. I started two days a week and moved to 3 days a week on month in. I feel amazing. My recovery time is longer due to lack of testosterone, but I'm here to say that I second everything this lady is saying. Compound barbell lifting is the fountain of youth.

Showed this to my mother who is at a very similar age and was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis of the hip, this video finally convinced her to take up weight training. So thank you starting strength! the potential of her getting her physical function to improve and even maybe one day be better than in her youth has given us both some real hope.

@@badinfluence9932 she can do 20 pushups in a row at nearly 70 years old so she's definitely in better shape than most people her age. I'd just say to take things slowly at the start, get used to the movements before trying to push progression in weight, will scare off most older people if you jump in too fast

Yeah...way to go Pat! I'm 60 and do the same compound lifts. I started a couple of years ago as a way to lose weight (I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis) and to improve bone strength post menopause. I absolutely love it and always relax with a sauna and cold shower afterwards! Some people think I'm crazy and it's a "young persons thing" and why don't I do oldie aerobic classes or Aquarobics. I condition on the treadmill or rowing machine too. Sure I might be the oldest gal in the weights room but all the young fellas and ladies are very supportive and always help out if I need a spotter. Our instructors are really good too.

Great stuff! Starting strength is about taking control of your life and doing things that work for you. Give it a try and if you are getting stronger, getting more functional, feeling better and on and on and on - maybe that is right for you? I love the look of determination on her face when she lifts, even the little smile on her overhead press set radiates that "I got this" spirit. Awesome!

It does sort itself out over time and practice. I found the arm/shoulder position for squat really really uncomfortable bordering on pain. I think it was something to do with having adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) a few years ago but I kept at it even if it just meant doing one or two reps. Then one day ...it is not there and bearable! Lots of shoulder warmups.. windmills, Cuban press and other rotator cuff exercises all help and vital before workout.
