" I don't care how mainstream or underground an album is, I just care if it's a good album or not" Yes, exactly, thank you. People care WAAYYYY too much about if a band is mainstream or not.. Is the music good? That's all to think about. And "nothing else matters" 😉

I’m the same way. In fact, some albums I like are albums other people don’t like. I love KFD by WASP, many WASP fans do not like that album because of the fact it’s industrial. But I don’t care. In fact, I think the industrial sound fits really well with the album’s overall dark tone.

I like Escape, it has a nice smooth, melodic sound, which is a good divergence from the rest of the album, creates variety and makes the pounding of the other songs that much more impactful when the album is listened to all the way through. It also has a cool "rebel anthem" feel to it. I also like Unforgiven II and Astronomy is really good.

I feel the same about “Escape” it’ has one of the catchiest choruses on the record and actually one of my favorite tracks on the record it’s so different sounding to the rest of the album!! if I had to chose a least favorite it would be “Trapped Under Ice”! and favorite track would be “CREEPING DEATH” COME ON’nnnnn 🥵🔥🔥

Thank you for throwing the whole "sellout" controversy out the window, because it's a bunch of bullshit. There are interviews from before even Kill 'Em All was released where they expressed the desire to slow down/simplify their sound. They were never against making ballads, nor were they ever against making music videos (they just didn't think the timing was right during the Kill/Ride/Puppets era, they were never outwardly against it). Heck, there wasn't even that much of a difference between TBA and their 80s albums. You could easily throw songs like FWTBT, Harvester, FTB, TLITD, TTTSNB, Escape, EOTB, Orion, and heck even Seek & Destroy on that record and they would totally fit. And there's even some thrashier songs on the album like Holier Than Thou, Through the Never, and Struggle Within. It wasn't the drastic change in style that people made it out to be. It still felt like Metallica and the efforts on the album felt 100% genuine. It didn't feel like they purposefully tailored it to appeal to as many people as possible, it was just them making the record they felt like they should make at the time. The fact that it's the best selling metal album of all time is something they had no control over. If you dislike their post-80s stuff because it just isn't your thing, that's fine. But the "sellout" controversy is a bunch of gatekeeping horseshit perpetuated by neckbearded manchildren who were pissed that girls started liking the band.

We always liked Metallica and metal in general but when we starting PLAYING metal more (90s) I guess they got salty lol. Put up with a lot of bs just to do what we love but that's life, and it's worth it. My mom is the same age as the guys in Metallica and loved them when Cliff was still alive. She told me she saw plenty of other women at a diverse amount of metal shows back then.. we aren't all there for a boyfriend or just groupies.. not shitting on those women at all, its just a pain when you're assumed to be in that camp when it's definitely not the sole reason you came lol. I was born in 91 with the black album and she played it a lot postpartum, still does actually. Just picture a 60 year old grandmother with grey hair and glasses yelling the lyrics to the god that failed. She did just that a couple weeks ago when I visited 🤘🏻 We aren't super rare like people think, they just don't see us.

My ranking of all Metallica's STUDIO albums; I"m not including any live albums, collaborations or covers: 1. Ride the Lightning (my third favorite album of all time) 2. And Justice For All (horribly underrated and underappreciated) 3. Master of Puppets (really solid album but not as strong as 1 and 2 IMO) 4. Kill 'Em All (Metal up your ass!) 5. The Black Album (this really gets a lot of unnecessary hate) 6. Hardwired To Self-Destruct (had a few good songs) 7. Death Magnetic (had two or three decent tracks but I could go the rest of my life without ever hearing this album again and I'd be just fine) 8. Load (yep, the name fits. They dropped a big load of turd on this one.) 9. Re-Load (now they just dropped a big pile of steaming dump on their own legacy) 10. St. Anger (The Unnamed Feeling was a decent song but that doesn't change the fact that this entire album sounds like Lars farting on a snare drum.)

I've just listened to the first 5 albums, so I'll just rank them and talk about some points. 1- Ride The Lightning 2- Kill 'em All 3- ...And Justice For All 4- Master Of Puppets 5- The Black Album 1* Dude... this is BY FAR the best Metallica Album in my opinion. Every song is FANTASTIC (even Escape, I like it). 2* This album is kind of forgotten, but it's one of the best PURE thrash metal albums of all time. I like everything in this album, and I don't care if the production is poor. This is incredible. 3* Every time I listen to this album again, I like it more! Ok, there is no bass, but bro: The best Lars drums performace; the most complex lyrics, the most creative guitar work (just my opinion, obviously). This is so epic. 4* I love this album, but... I don't know, I felt this is like "Ride The Lighting, but heavier". Overall, I think it's a great album, but really overrated. The production is the best of these 5 albums, but the songs temselves aren't. Anyway, really good songs here. 5* I agree that the band gone more comercial on this album but whatever, I don't care. If you listen the songs, you'll probably like them. I think this album doesn't desearves this success, but it's not that bad, come on. It gets so much more hate than it desearves. I'm brazilian, so sorry for some grammar mistakes lol. Nice video man

Good video, I really like these discography reviews you're doing. Is there a chance you'll be looking into Slayer's discography in the future? Also, on the subject of first albums, I think I got lucky. Be me. Be me at 13. Finally decide to give Metallica a try. Decide to just listen to the latest they had out. Latest album is St Anger. Still listen to it and kind of enjoy it. Continue to listen to the rest of the music getting Garage Days, Load and ReLoad, still impressed enough to dive deeper. Finally get the first four albums (and the black album), get blown away by everything and remain a fan to this day. A few years later, Death Magnetic comes out. Get Death Magnetic, still thoroughly enjoy what's on offer. Finally Lulu comes out, story ends there.

I've been going through a Metallica phase because quarantine has me going back to all the stuff that made me first fall in love with metal, so I've listened to all these recently. This might be a spicy list for some, but it's genuinely how I feel right now in my life in the year 2020: 1. Ride the Lightning 2. Master of Puppets 3. The Black Album 4. Kill 'Em All 5. Load 6. ...And Justice for All 7. Death Magnetic 8. ReLoad 9. St. Anger 10. Hardwired... to Self Destruct I've always loved Escape, so given that, there's no reason RtL wouldn't be #1 for me. The Black Album is so high for a few reasons - I'm not necessarily a thrasher, so I actually really dig the slower, riffier Sabbathy kind of metal on here, plus the two incredible ballads. I'm a pop lover at heart. Sonically, this is one of the best albums ever made. As a musician who's recorded in studios, those experiences really make you appreciate this album's breathtaking production even more. (Fun fact, Lars used the same snare drum that Dave Grohl used on Nevermind - the Tama Terminator. Probably had something to do with why the drum sound on both is so good!) I definitely agree that taking half of Load and adding two or three songs from ReLoad would have resulted in a classic album. I made that album as a spotify playlist and listen to it often. ...AJFA has always been overrated for me. I'd say about half the record is undeniably classic, the other half is the kind of slow, chuggy metal that I think they did way better on the Black Album. This is also where Metallica's overly bloated song structures really start to become an issue for me. So, St. Anger is undeniably a worse album than Hardwired and it absolutely deserves the reputation it has as one of the worst metal albums ever made. But here's the thing, it's inspired trash. There's some genuine emotion that goes into how fucking awful that album is and there's some legitimately compelling anguish in James's voice. It also resulted in Some Kind of Monster, which is one of the best music docs ever made. Hardwired is just so boring, bland and uninspired to me. There's a few good tracks for sure, but goddamn, the riffs just suck. It's a real chore for me to get through and is the band at their most "going through the motions."

My dad owned everything from Kill Em All to Load when they first came out, and that was some of the first metal music I ever listened to growing up when he passed those records down to me. I'll rank em all real quick (see what I did there)? 1. Master of Puppets 2. Ride the Lightning (if only cause of Escape) 3. And Justice for All (even with the bass issue) 4. Kill Em All 5. The Black Album 6. Everything else lmao The first 5 albums are the only ones I listen to and the only ones anyone new to Metallica should listen to. Everything else from Load to now I couldn't give less of a shit for aside from some of Garage Inc and S&M (No Leaf Clover is pretty good). While I'm at it, happy birthday to Moose!

Awesome video again man. I love some Metallica albums. Not gonna go into detail on each album but here are a few thoughts on some of them. I personally think Master of Puppets to be my favourite and their best. I love how thrilling and powerful and exciting the record turned out to be and still as relevant and important in metal. I love Ride the Lightening too. Load is actually one of my favourites which I really like a lot and very underrated. I think St. Anger is a respect for me and I understood what James went through, there were some tracks I like but it's not all perfect however it is not to me one of THE worst metal albums of all time. Now for Lulu I respect the idea and the concept and I am a fan of Lou Reed but the execution to the record was not great and there were moments I tried to get into it but I couldn't. I respect the record but I've heard worse. I really enjoy the Black Album and the production is one of their best, I find it overrated that I don't personally call it a classic. There are very very good songs on there but it's not as a strong album to me like the first two I've mentioned and choose the most. I like the later Metallica but you can't go wrong with earlier albums. Great stuff and keep it up, I like the segment a lot.

I do believe if Justice was edited to a single album and Jason's bass was present (which is quite good) then it'd be up there with Puppets. It's strange, isn't it, that it took them just eight years to release five fantastic and genre defining records. But in the 30 years that followed they have produced nothing remotely on par with that legacy. Apart from a few good songs, it's all just plain boring or downright ridiculous (yeah, looking at you, St. Anger). I kinda respect them for Lulu, though, because at least once they were thinking outside the box and took a risk. (However, I'm still not sure if I like it.)

agreed. I think James kind of burned out which is a real shame as I consider him a real genius, musically. A lot of leads that people attribute to Kirk were, IMO, played by James or at least written by him. 4 example Fade 2 Black intro lead. It's possible that all the touring, fame, drinking & drugs took a toll on him. I believe Battery is about amphetamine (they claim its about a certain rock club but that doesn't make sense with the lyrics). MOP is about drugs, probably coke but the line "sucking darkest CLEAR" sounds more like meth. & alcohol can be really devastating in large amounts/ long term.

I personally think that Justice is better than Ride The Lightning even considering the lack of bass on it,because the songs themselves are all killer. Master is still my favourite though, one of the best metal albums I heard,no weak minute on it. I actually really like Load/Reload. Honestly I find myself coming back to them more than the early stuff, not cuz I think they're better or anything, just cuz I've heard the old stuff a million times. I know people hate them cuz it's not thrash, theres a ton of filler tracks, and it was a bit of a warning sign for what was to come with St. Anger. But I think they're definitely better if you just take all the good songs from both albums and listen to it that way. I get why people think they're bad but I enjoy em.

I actually am really weird with my Metallica... If I ranked their albums, I'd put 'em like this: Kill 'Em All: 4.5/5 - pure, unapologetic thrash metal and what kickstarted an underground genre. Ride The Lightning: 5/5 - I really love this throughout, my personal favorite album of their's, yes even Escape Master of Puppets: 5/5 - while not as emotionally attached to this, I still love it throughout, it's fucking killer and Disposable Heroes is a masterpiece ...And Justice For All: 4.5/5 - BASS... MISSING... Most of these songs are killer, but just lack something due to the bass. Blackened is one of the greatest songs they ever made, Harvester is HEAVY, Sanity is thrashy as fuck. The Black Album: 3.5/5 - It just bores me towards the end... I love Sandman, Roam, Sad But True, Of Wolf And Man, Holier than Thou! But man, the original Unforgiven isn't my thing, Struggle Within, Through The Never all are skips for me. Nothing Else Matters is great though. Load: 4/5 - I love this albeit not at all similar to the "original" Metallica. Mama Said, Hero Of The Day, The Outlaw Torn, Until It Sleeps, Thorn Within, House That Jack Built? This is actually my third favorite album from a personal standpoint if I were to rank them. Reload: 4.5/5 - I fucking love this, Low Man's Lyric, Where The Wild Things are, and my god... Unforgiven II, are all masterpieces. Memory Remains, Devil's Dance, Fuel, Bad Seed are all fun butt-rock ish but FUN! My 2nd favorite tbh. St. Anger: 2.5/5 - It's got some good moments, Dirty Window, St. Anger, etc. It could have been great had it been trimmed down with different production, but the snare gives me a headache over the course of a full listen. Death Magnetic: 4/5 - I think if you give this album some Black Album production and mixing rather than that brickwalled shite we got, this could've been the perfect album to follow Justice in 1990. It's killer, All Nightmare Long, Day That Never Comes, My Apocalypse? All killer Hardwired To Self-Destruct: 3.5/5 - I cannot listen to this one all the way through, the first half is great, the latter half though, snoozefest. Atlas Rise, Halo On Fire and Moth Into Flame are all great and worthy of being on some of the older albums imo. 72 Seasons: 4.5/5 - I actually have come to love this despite not feeling any way towards it upon release. However, seeing them on the tour, giving it time to sink in, etcetera. I have come to love it. The best James has sounded in years, Lars doing Lars things, Bass is mixed well, just cut a few minutes off here and there and it could be perfect. Only song I dislike is You Must Burn, so cheesy dear lord. Inamorata is a song worthy of being held up like Fade To Black, One and the Thing That Should Not Be... If Darkness Had a Son is a stomper bringing me back to the Justice album, I love this album so much.

Love this video man, and a lot of your others which I’ve just discovered! I am so with you on Lulu, I think the hate for it largely misses the point fucking entirely. Like obviously this is a weird, bleak, difficult album and they all just did it cuz they felt like it. People act like the band and Lou thought this was a completely normal record to make and thought it would be a hit. It’s obviously gonna be one that a lot of people dislike, it’s ridiculous and bravely so, and that’s ok.

Late to the video I know, but very understandable and respectable scores here. My list would go something like this (be warned, there are some controversial rankings): 1: Master of Puppets. One of the best thrash metal albums of all time bar none. It’s everything great about Ride The Lightning slightly improved and without any underwhelming songs (looking at you Escape). Top notch lyrics, solos, riffs, production, songwriting, everything. 10/10. 2: Ride The Lightning. Amazing album. Definite step up from Kill Em All. James’ vocals are still raw and full of energy, but also more controlled. Production is better, more variety in terms of sound and composition, better lyrics. Escape is an underwhelming song to me, though still far from a bad song. 9.5/10. 3: And Justice For All. Metallica’s most technical and progressive album. They went longer and more complicated with these songs in terms of structure, tempo changes, time signature changes, complexity of riffs and solos. Also I would argue it’s their darkest album lyrically. Biggest problems are the lack of bass on the mix, the dry drum sound, and some songs are a bit too long for their own good. 8.5/10. 4: Kill Em All. A great starting point for the band. Arguably their most raw album in terms of production and sound. You can hear the heavy influence of bands like Diamond Head and Iron Maiden and Mötorhead. Musically, the album is kind of one dimensional, James’ vocals aren’t the best, and the solos are very samey. 8/10. 5: Black album. Good album. Definite step up in terms of production and mixing, though definitely a more commercial album. Not a bad thing though; there’s a reason this album sold so well. Some songs like Enter Sandman and Sad But True are slightly overplayed, and some lackluster songs (Wherever I May Roam and Don’t Tread On Me), but still a lot of good performances. 7.5/10. 6: Hardwired…To Self Destruct. Their best since the black album for me. Sure, it’s too long, musically there’s nothing new or special here, definitely some songs on the second disc that should’ve been left on the cutting room floor (Man UNkind, Murder One, Am I Savage). But the production and mixing is WAY better than Death Magnetic and St. Anger, plus it has some of their best songs in years (Spit Out The Bone, Atlas, Rise!, Moth Into Flame). 7/10. 7: Death Magnetic. Solid return to form for the band. Mixing is more balanced than St. Anger, though this albums mastering to me is almost unbearable. Prime example of all the wrong things about the loudness war. Lots of good riffs and songs here, but a lot of them are too long, plus the lyrics aren’t anything special or meaningful. I also think the quality of the album falls off after All Nightmare Long. Lack of new ideas doesn’t really help. 6.5/10. 8: St. Anger. Yep. I’m not of those people who thinks St. Anger is an overhated album. While it is very flawed (snare drum sound, poor production and mixing, songs that are way too long and repetitive), there is plenty of genuine raw emotion packed into this album, no doubt coming from the turmoil the band was going through during the recording. Plus, although they’re simple, I love a lot of the riffs, as well as the gritty guitar tone. Completely understand why many people hate it, but I don’t. 6/10. 9: Load. Not a very good album for me. Respect their attempt to diversify their sound and try new things, but for every good/great song (King Nothing, Bleeding Me, The Outlaw Torn, Until It Sleeps) there’s a mediocre/boring/bad song (Cure, Ronnie, The House That Jack Built, 2x4). Overall it’s a mediocre album I can take or leave. 5/10. 10: ReLoad. Pretty much everything I said about Load also applies here, except there aren’t as many highs and the lows are worse. Songs like Attitude, Slither, Bad Seed, and Carpe Diem Baby are some of my least favorite Metallica songs. Boring tracks like Prince Charming and Low Man’s Lyric don’t help matters. Some definite highlights (Fuel, Unforgiven II, Fixxxer), but not many. 3.5/10.

I'm disappointed you don't like Death Magnetic that much. I reviewed this album today and I love this record. There's not a single bad song on it. It's even my 4th favorite Metallica album so far. It'll probably stay like that because I predict Hardwired and 72 Seasons won't be as good as Death Magnetic.

I didnt get into Metallica until the Through the Never movie dropped (was working at an Imax theater at the time). And funny enough I decided i'd listen to St Anger first, since obviously the hate it gets is all ringing so even i heard of the controversy. But honestly I kind of like it? At this point I would say the production of Death Magnetic hurts my ears more than the production of St Anger. The fact DM is clipping on the final product makes my dumb audio brain lag. But the rough mix quality of Anger has grown on me. Not to say its a perfect album, hell I really only like about half of it: Frantic, St Anger, most of Some kind of Monster, Dirty Window, and Unnamed Feeling. and on ocassion i can do Sweet Amber and shoot me again, but they and the rest are super hit and miss. And after i listened to Chris Jericho's podcast episode revisting Load and Reload, and hearing them give song suggestions (along with new "cut down" tracklists suggestion combining them) I argue that there are some extremely underrated songs. Unforgiven 2, Aint My Bitch (its dumb but i think its just a fun track), Fixxxer, Low Mans Lyric, Devils Dance (the bass line alone makes me love it), even Ronnie i think is a fun time. On a show i do my cohost did a similar thing where he made a new version (Called it Pre-Load, which is about as dumb as it could get) and its also a solid listing. Also Call of Ktulu is their best instrumental. I bounce between it and Orion but theres something about Ktulu, man. ALSO highly recommend checking out Bog Studios' videos where he does covers of metallica in the style of Meshuggah. his version of Ktulu is nuts

We all know the first four albums are quite good. In modern times, I didn't dislike the Black Album because of "selling out" but because of boring, arena rock lyrics/sound. Countdown to Extinction slowed down too but was much better overall lyrically & sonically. Also Death Magnetic, almost everywhere but here, is scored on what it isn't (St Anger) rather then what it is (a very mediocre rock album). Rick Rubin told them to use Master of Puppets as inspiration & outline for Death Magnetic. They fell more then a bit short in that regard.

Don’t know if in the time that this video was uploaded to now you’ve come across this tidbit of information, but it wasn’t Jason Newsted’s fault what happened to the sound of the bass in And Justice For All, it was Lars’. He thought it would be disrespectful to have a prominent bass in the album following Cliff’s death and made in production his bass drum be the only audible bass sound of the record. It’s a fucking mental excuse, but that’s what happened.

Of fuckin course my least favourite album is Lulu 🤣 then again, I'm not a Lou Reed fan anyway, even at his best, so I've never got his style full stop! In my opinion I think the album was doomed from the start and that it's one of the worst albums of all time, but hey ho, we all hear stuff differently! I will say Metallica have some interesting riffs, but I just hate the awkwardness of Lou Reed's off beat, off time and off tempo spoken word lyrics cutting right through the whole mix! And Lars is especially atrocious on there aswell, you can tell it was done live cause he can't keep time for shit throughout the whole thing! The rest is as follows: 10) St Anger (some cool ideas but I can never make it through to them just cause of that fucking snare, and too many awful songs in between the halfway decent bits!) 9) Reload (I love The Memory Remains, but other than Fuel I could not tell you what else was on there even if I had a gun to my head 🤣) 8) Load (eh, like you said some parts are ok some are really bad) 7) Death Magnetic (I actually really like this album, reason why I put it below Hardwired is simply production. I get a headache every time I listen to it, which is a shame cause I actually dig the songs quite a lot. Apart from The Unforgiven 3. I think that's a terrible song lol!) 6) Hardwired (Spit Out the Bone in my opinion is the greatest song they have done since maybe And Justice For All!) 5) Black Album 4) Kill Em All 3) Ride The Lightning 2) Master of Puppets 1) ...and Justice for All (lack of bass aside, I fucking love how unbelievably tight it sounds, and the intricacy of the playing. Never mind the songs are just so crushing!) Great video man 🤘🤘

I think any "success" that they experienced after the Black album came from the fact that the state of metal after the 80's became so piss-poor at least in the US that the bar fell pretty low at that point. Metallica takes on so many new fans who are discovering them with every release so you have to take into account the metal climate at the time.

A bit harsh on some of those albums haha. Load is pretty good. so should have had one cd and combine the best songs from reload would have made an excellent album. After Listening to all 10 Studio albums by Metallica. more times than i can count it on my fingers, this is my ranking, from Worst to best (Which means no Lulu for me, yay) 10. Load: its just...boring, its the definition of a snoozfest. 0/5 9. Reload: the only reason its slightly higher is because of Fuel and The Unforgiven II. the rest of it is just the same as Load, 0.5/5 8. St. Anger: its okay...granted to enjoy it you either have to be a Masochist or high on something. 1.5/5 7. Hardwired...To Self-Destruct: Its an okay Album, nothing more and less really. 2.5/5 6. ...And Justice for All. 3/5. For Obvious Reasons 5. Death Magnetic: Pretty much the same as Hardwired, but slightly better. 3/5 4. Kill 'Em All: Its a good debut album. clearly it holds up a lot. 3.5/5 3. Metallica/The Black Album: a fucking classic, and any elitist who thinks otherwise can go and listen to Limp Bizkit. 4/5 2. Ride the Lighting: The same as the previous one, but a little bit better. 4.5/5 1. Master of Puppets: You have to be some kind of alien if Master of Puppets isn't at the very least in your top 3 favorite albums by Metallica. 5/5
