It is finally here! The Rex Ambassador review. Something I don’t mention in the video is that this razor is made completely of 316L marine grade stainless steel. This gives it a good heft without being cumbersome or offering any noticeable hand fatigue.
DISCLAIMER I noticed only once the video was done that the mic didn’t seat properly in my recorder which caused the video to default to the phones internal mic. This causes a noticeable degradation in the quality of sound where audio spikes at times. I apologize in advance!

I don’t have many razors, - the Viking Chieftain, Merkur Futur, and the Feather AS-2DS I bought the Ambassador XL as soon as it became available on the UK market. The XL is so good it’s made my other razors redundant. The XL is my go to razor and every shave is just pleasurable. The price can be a little off putting but I would recommend this razor to everyone. Nowadays with the likes of PayPal, Klarna etc you can even spread the cost. You won’t be disappointed. The first blade I used was the Astra SP. I’m a practical guy and it was the box I had open at the time. It was a great shave. Now I mainly use a Feather blade dialled up to 5 - 5.5 and it’s awesome every time. For some unknown reason I decided to put in a Voskchod blade last night and it blew me away! It literally felt like there was no blade in it at all. 3 passes, alittle touch up here and I was done. I used some alum block to check I hadn’t overdone it but there was no stinging,perfect.

I have an Ambassador sitting in the box, this video confirms my initial impression that this is just too much razor for me at this point. Been rocking double edged razors for a whole two months now, so the Rex will make an appearance once I have improved my technique. Thanks for the tip on blade choice!

Hello Timmy, nice video of the ambassador. I have the Rex Envoy, and I preferred that one over the ambassador for several reasons. One of them is that I didn't want another adjustable in my collection, because I am quite pleased with the vintage gillettes I already have. Another reason is the cost, because the Envoy comes in a much more affordable price, and finally the reason that convinced me to go with the Envoy was a pass around of the razor, or better, a long term test on a shaving forum, where almost every one that tested it and already had the ambassador, preferred it. Almost everybody said that the Envoy would be somewhere between a 3 to 4 in comparison to the ambassador, but the different weight, and weight distribution had provided a different and smoother shave. I use mine with nacet, and Astra blue blades, and while is quite efficient, (like an R41), I get a smooth shave, but I can feel the blade. In general I don't like razors that are picky with the blades, especially at this price range.

George kanatas all INCREDIBLY valid points. I purchased the Envoy and it should be here Monday, so I’m very curious to see how it does in comparison to the Ambassador. I wish it were a 2 piece non adjustable, but I like the design of the Envoy and that they kept the handle grip. I think it can be difficult to justify a $250 adjustable in this market when we have so many options. At $250 like you stated it shouldn’t be so particular. I’m just lucky it’s with a blade that I love. I think the craftsmanship is 🔥🔥 but I was initially very disappointed in my first week of shaving with it.

@@TheShavingTulsan I am waiting for a comparison test between the two. I don't think that anybody else has done one. As a side note, the head profile of the Envoy is slimmer, and don't forget to mention the weight, the length, and the gravity point of each one. I bet this is going to be a good one! 😉

I've had my Rex for about 2 years. Usually, keep it at 2.5 - 3 , my blade of choice for this razor is a Personna Lab Blue. It is much more aggressive than the Gibbs , which I also have. I'm glad I have it in my collection , but don't think it would be a daily driver.

I always go back to Astra Green also. I like Feather blades with my Rockwell 6S. I originally goat the Model T and used it five times only to shelf it.

That’s always my fear is spending that kind of money on a razor only to resell for less than I bought or to relegate the razor to shelf duty. Astra Greens have been my tried and true for awhile but recently I’ve really enjoyed the King C Gillette blades.

Stumbled upon this after searching for some Ambassador reviews, specifically blade choice. I've always used Feather and Derby extra in my Futur; however, when I tried them in the Ambassador it felt really aggressive. Tried the Astra Green today and things felt super smooth. Thanks for the recommendation!

Great review, Tim. I'm glad that you found the blade pairing that makes the Rex work for you. Price-wise, I feel the Rex Ambassador is worth it just based on the build quality and the fact that it is adjustable (not to mention the lifetime warranty). Is it the easiest razors to work with? definitely not! At least for me, it required a lot of optimizations (gap setting and blade pairing) to make this razor truly sing. But now that I have, I would rank it in my top 3 razors.

I just bought one and it came today. The shave was pretty rough cause I wanted to test out all the settings, and didn’t do a great pre-shave routine. I bought it for $200 of someone in one of the shaving groups. This is my first stainless steel razor and to me I think nickel plated brass razors or razors with a chrome plating are smoother than stainless steel razors it seems like if they don’t have the best glide. Imho

Enjoyed your review. I totally agree regarding finding the right blade/razor combo that works for you. I’ve had my Rex A for a week now and I’ve been using a Voskhod blade. For me the combo is very smooth and efficient. Glad I ran across your channel. Looking forward to your next video.

Totally agree with the Voskhod Blade choice, tried lots of blades and was gutted with the rough shave of the Rex (despite loving the SS build) but then put in a Voskhod and dialled all the way down below 1 on the dial down to a 1/2 I guess? and YES! Amazing shave and then used the Blade daily for four more shaves, now almost don't want to use anything else... also for anyone new to these you have to PRESS the Blade on to the top cap before screwing up tight (if you want to avoid blood)!!

Nice video Tim. That Ambassador is a great razor. I had one that had a defect that I didn't know about at the time. I started getting some weird drag off the razor. I sold it and the next fella who had it determined there was a flaw and the good folks at Razor Emporium replaced it. I wish I had figured it out myself:)

Hey Tim! I did some reading up on the gillette adjustable razors and you gotta give it an extra 1/4 turn. I was afraid to do it on mine at first but once you do it will adjust the gap while closed no problem!

I’ve discussed my Rex A experience with you on IG and I’m really getting it dialed in for my skin/beard. My last shave, posted on IG @gnpjammer1988, I decided to start my normal 2 pass WTG shave at a lower setting 3.5 and then dialed it up to 5 for my second pass with a 2nd use Astra Green. I’m going to stick with the low/high approach for a week or 2 and see if this is a better approach for me than the vice versa. My Rex A was a surprise Father’s Day gift so I don’t have any “skin” in the game, but I’d been eyeing one before I received it. I would invest the coin for what I feel is an heirloom razor and likely the best quality razor I will ever own. That brush system is intriguing and that lather was crazy rich. Nice work. Cheers 🍻!

Thank you for the comment brother! I think the standout for me on this razor is that Herron quality you mentioned. This razor is built like a tank and looks fantastic. One of my favorite-looking razors out there by far. Sounds like quite the Father’s Day gift!! When given the right blade pairing it just sings and I’m glad I was able to change my opinion with it after experimenting. Cheers brother! 🍻🍻

What blade is the best now for the Ambassador in your opinion?
@ThaRedPitbull
@ThaRedPitbull 2 года назад
Your experience with the Ambassador sounds similar to mine. I've shaved twice with the Ambassador and I think the de blade I used (perma sharp) was too sharp in combination with the Ambassador. I think the next time I shave I will throw in a Nacet or Gillette Silver blue. Nice vid.

Same as you I really wanted to love this razor as it is the best crafted razor po ut there (imho). However, I just couldn't get a comfortable shave out of it no matter the blade. It was always to agressive. I can't remember if I tried an Astra I think I did cause I really tried lots of them. 250 USD razor that I struggle with is sadly not an option. I found it odd what you're saying about Astra and Polsilver cause they're totally different blades. Polsivler is much sharper and gives a different feel than an Astraif you want to try that yourself considering Polsilver Iridium are no longer being made, try Wizamet Super Iridium , people say they're the same blade.
@TheShavingTulsan
@TheShavingTulsan 4 года назад
I completely understand where you are coming from. That’s the main thing for me, I don’t get razors just to collect them, I get them to use them. If a razor is uncomfortable to shave with or downright unusable, I simply won’t keep it. Which is always the worst feeling. I’ll have to add the Wizamet Super Idium to the list. I know of them but have never used them

Try a Voskhod and dial down to below 1 and it will work honest! I sliced myself six or seven times and was heading to put it on eBay when I dialled it right down.... now I can get up to 1 or 2 setting...

Great review. Unfortunately, the REX Ambassador has not worked for me, too tuggy and too aggressive. If only Astra or Polsilver blades make up for a good shave experience, this razor is definitely not worth the high price tag in my humble opinion. It’s simply not versatile enough and there are excellent razors available on the market, which do a much better job even under cruise control carefree conditions. I finally sold mine and happy that it may find more love from a different wet shaver.
@TheShavingTulsan
@TheShavingTulsan 4 года назад
And I think that’s the most difficult decision to have. With other quality adjustables in the marketplace do we have room for a razor that is blade-specific at this price point? Hard to say. I think the build quality, lifetime warranty, and customer service provided by Rex Supply & Razor Emporium speak volumes, but with the release of the Rex Envoy, it might hit that sweet spot. Mine arrived today so I will be taking that out on a test drive soon!

How would they model the razor performance from a razor blade? I think they told you that to shut you up.
@TheShavingTulsan
@TheShavingTulsan 3 года назад
I honestly have no idea what goes into constructing a razor. But I imagine tuning is part of the process. Every blade shaves differently, and if their testers were using only Polsilver blades to fine tune angles, blade retention, etc during the prototype testing phase then that could work. I have blades that work well in some razors and horrible in others. The ambassador is just another example of a picky razor. But honestly not 100% sure 🤷🏻

Then they should give polsilver blades pack with it and not feather.
