Rob Zombie should have done the Texas Chainsaw Massacre not Halloween. His style is totally compatible with TCM. Edit I've never seen House of 1,000 corpses. Edit : I still haven't seen 1,000 corpses.
It's been my experience that most metal/rock guys generally are because instead of just sitting there full of pent up rage they let it out once in a while.
Madison Price I would personally love a skate park by my house. I don’t skate anymore but it’d be a cool thing for the community. Rob zombie is just a lame old man. Who the fuck complains about a noisy skate park, old people and busybodies that’s who. Don’t like it then move! He can afford to pick up and move anywhere else unlike most people.
Jason Kennedy yeah a lot of them still say it is considering that it “remakes” everything that happens AFTER the original. In a way it still is a remake. But I know what you mean.
They used my sisters high-school as the hospital, Alcovy in GA. It was insane what they did. They built the guard tower, and the next day it was gone. Construction in film is amazing
Whether you liked the Halloween remake or not (I personally don’t since the original is my all time favorite movie), you have to give credit to Zombie for fighting to have complete creative control over the project. Not many filmmakers have the balls that he does to push back against a film studio that’s trying to stick their nose in too much and maintain control over a movie.
Halloween is that franchise where you can tell which one had more creativity from the writers and what had studio interference. I appreciate every installment and find some to be good popcorn movies. Other's I'm terrified
Nightmare on Elm Street is another one. You can tell which ones the creative people involved had time to flush out ideas, and which ones were streamlined and just pushed through
I agree, 1,2,4 and 5 were what I grew up with and will always have a spot in my heart because of watching them during sleepovers with friends and cousins and being terrified to shut the lights off to go to bed. The Curse got weird and I even realized it as a kid bit still enjoyed it. I remember how excited I got when I saw the commercials for H20 just to be let down, Resurrection was an absolute joke and everyone knows that. The announcement of Rob Zombies reboot got me pumped and it delivered, fuck the haters.
I loved rob zombies versions of Halloween at least the first one. I remember sneaking into Halloween 1 in 2007 when I was 11 and it creeped me out to say the least. I got home in a pitch black house and thought my life was gonna end. To me that means he did a good job lol 👍
@punkd Shoenice22 on video dude he was fucking 11 at the time and being creeped out by a horror movie absolutely has nothing to do with being taken advantage of by people. Stop being a dick in RU-vid comment section
@punkd Shoenice22 on video you’re just angry that your comment is extremely invalid 🤷🏻♂️ sorry to burst your bubbles but nobody gives a fuck about your macho act bud
@@Billy_Lenz LOL misunderstood. No, it was understood correctly for the trash that it was. Halloween 2018 and Kills are absolute masterpieces compared to Zombie's garbage.
I want Rob Zombie to get his hands on a killer script. The dude has a good eye and knows how to direct actors well. He is unique enough and has his own natural creative spin on things to make somebody else's story come to life if the story is both good and matches his sensibilities. Absolutely love the guy, whatever he churns out. Big fan since the La Sexorcisto days.
His Halloween wasn’t bad, his michael was pretty scary since he was so giant. I just don’t think mike needed a backstory, the later movies got goofy with that, and his didn’t work either.
ThatOneOddLookingDog ThatBarksAtYou that’s why for me in the new one that came out, the Laurie stride connection was kinda wonky. I still enjoyed the movie, the end showdown just didn’t make too much sense since they weren’t related.
@@walshdog61 So give him backstory as "the shape." Otherwise it's just an excuse for shit storytelling (which was sufficient in the 70s-90s but not now).
It honestly is I was scared watching it as a kid and yeah as you grow up you realize it wasn’t the BEST but still good though to watch I feel like this 2018 remake and Halloween Kills were ok people are overhyping them making it seem they are great when really they weren’t that scary or crazy but they did have some good scenes here and there.
Didn't like his Myers. He talked it ruined the character for me lol. Like others have pointed out a Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake would've been more up his ally
To me what I especially did not like was the ending of the first one where Lori still lives but is essentially mangled. Huge difference compared to the original
First was garbage, but it had some style on it, it was like watching dirty nitty gritty garbage, but you liked it. It’s like eating a Big Mac, you enjoy it but it will fuck your stomach up. Second now... that one is just shit.
I have to say it. If there were an old vs new by Nostalgia Critic, I think he would give a point to the remake for having a better Loomis. While Donald Pleasence is good, he seems to just be a Van Helsing stereotype in the original. In the remake, you get more insight into what it was like being Michael's doctor and he was a lot more sympathetic. This is why I wish Rob had kept the alternate ending in his remake. Because there's a moment where Loomis really reaches out to Michael and it works.
@@casesoutherland4175 I think Donald is perfect for the original because that movie kinda thrives on that mystique and stereotype you're describing. At the same time, I loved Malcolm in the RZ movie. I also think the original ending is 100x better than the gunshot ending. It makes sense with the rest of the movie.
Love it too. Zombies best movie imo. I know a lot of people love rejects but his Halloween is great. The scariest most terrifying MM ever put on screen so far.
My biggest issue with Zombie's Halloween was the unnecessary, often comically deranged and fucked up background he created for Michael Myers. It killed the mystique of the character and almost made you say "Well, no wonder he turned out the way he did." Think about it: what's more terrifying: 1) Zombie's vision of MM 2) A supposedly normal child in suburbia who, inexplicably, possesses depths of unimaginable evil. Who has no reason to be a killer, but simply is. No remorse, no empathy, not even a motive. Just walking death. I'd go with two, but that's just my humble opinion.
Took the words right out of my mouth. It's not that Zombie gave Michael a background, it's that he changed the background. The family was unintentionally hilarious.
I did that. I went to Rob Zombie's Haunting World of El Superbeasto Screening. He was there and after the film they handed us Mics and talk about what we did and didn't like.
If you want to talk about studio meddling. Invite ZACK SNYDER, CHRIS TERRIO, DAVID AYER, JAY OLIVA to talk about WARNER BROS studio meddling with movies.
I love Silver Bullet, but for me I gotta go with The Howling. To this day in my opinion the werewolves from The Howling are the scariest looking of all time.
My opinions on his Halloween movies is that it seened liked he focused more on a madness angle than a paranormal one . It just seemed like his Halloween movie was eyecandy for psychologist and sociologist if that makes sense.
@@rabbitholeguy the only ugly was the beginning with his step-father, sister and bully(well, those custodians in the original vr but that is rare to see so.. Doesn't count now I guess.) The rest was fine. Laurie and her friends were likeable. The adoptive parents were the same way. The Sheriff is also likeable and not ugly. TONS of characters that aren't what you described. At all. Michael Myers also fits that "Shape" description. Tyler mane is a GIANT and is huge. You'd shit your pants in a heartbeat. Also the grunts Michael does in the remake when he's stabbing that lady in the hospital.. The movie is great. Definitely exceeds the original by a lot. More streamlined and digestible. More fears, and thrills. The new remakes are garbage. They're less horror and more action. They're barely written to make sense, like they had 100 writers to make 1 page each without working together on those pages lol. Halloween Kills is for sure the worst in the franchise to date. Considering we have Resurrection... It's kinda fucked to think someone went out of their way to make a WORSE Halloween movie than Resurrection.
I think the biggest issue with Rob Zombie's Halloween was that we never needed Michael Myers to have a backstory. And to me it actually works against his character. The whole spookiness of Michael Myers from the original Halloween was that he was just this evil person and there was really no reason why he was evil. Kind of similar to how in the Dark Knight we don't know the Joker's back story. And we are better off not knowing it. We just know that he's a Madman who wants to create chaos. He just wants to watch the world burn. Which is basically the same thing that Michael Myers was. So when you introduce a backstory it diminishes the Cornerstone thing that makes that character so great.
I agree. The original Michael Myers could withstand bullets. Or die and resurrect himself or whatever. There was something supernatural about him. The Rob Zombie version diminished the character, like you said, and turned him into a kid with problems. Zombie used poverty and a poor upbringing as a way to explain evil when in fact evil can lurk anywhere with even the best family. That's what John Carpenter got right. Also, at the end of part 2, Zombie used a switch-a-roo with UFO's or something to make Laurie evil. I just thought that was dumb.
@@serpentsepia6638 yep. And you could have made alterations to the story line without changing Michael. I think it would have been so much better if Michaels family was normal and wholesome and Michael still kills the bully and murders the family. Would have shown a backstory but kept it at simply and purely evil maintaining what makes Michael so creepy.
I love Rob Zombie's Halloween, never bothered to watch the sequel. One of my favorite remakes alongside Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead, John Carpenter's The Thing, Jeff Goldblum's The Fly, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2003, and The Hills Have Eyes.
I actually just watched The Devil's Rejects for the first time recently and I fuckin' loved it. Rob seems like such a chill guy too. Can't wait to watch the full episode.
As a born and raised Philadelphian and big fan of all his movies, I hope Zombie eventually ends up making the Broad Street Bullies movie that he was rumored to be working on before 3 From Hell was even announced. Go Flyers!
Yeah dont get that. They must be going purely on numbers it did (if it did bad ) saying it sucked. Del Toro didn't want to be in that movie? I saw that more as the character...yeah lol he wasn't too happy most of the time. The atmosphere of the movie was A+ dark, gloomy. Dunno maybe it had some flaws but I tend to overlook those when they nail the vibe.
As a fan of the original universal monsters, and the work Rick Baker has done, I loved the newest take on the Wolfman. Benicio del Toro played Lawrence spot on (based on the newest backstory they created with his father). Let's not forget, the original played the relationship between the Talbots as a warm and caring one. This one had Lawrence a drunk who's suffered from extreme child abuse. The atmosphere, feel, and tone of the movie were all great. But I'm in no position to argue Rob Zombies point, just my own opinion.
Agreed. Underrated for sure, and definitely the best attempt by Universal to reboot the old, classic Universal Monsters. They haven't even come close to doing anything nearly as good in the time since.
@@folkscrazyouthere3076 "obviously better" lmao the new Halloween is injected with liberal garbage from beginning to end. It's laughable at best. Every decision Laurie Strode makes is facepalm worthy to say the least.
Studio notes for Rob Zombie's Halloween : Please don't destroy the Michael Myers character by having him kill a hamster in the first five minutes. Rob Zombie: Fuck You
Rob zombie was my first concert i was 15 the crowd was so packed i was cramping up tryna make my way to the bathroom. I lost my shoe at the beginning went the whole show with 1 shoe stepping in beer puke an at the end some girl tryed walking off with my shoe i was like yo thats my shoe she said give her a kiss for it back lol i did Good time!
I wasn’t a Rob Zombie fan, not ever. I most definitely AM now. I think I’m going to have to give his films another look. Hearing these clips (I’ll have to listen to the whole podcast) actually made me think to myself, WoW, I actually identify with this guy way more that I thought I would. I too was the weird kid into horror movies (Fangoria magazine fanatic with pictures of crazy shit on my walls that freaked my parents out) and senior year of high school I’d discovered punk and that was it. That’s what I love about this show, it actually had me rethink many of my positions on many subjects and people. Hell, you even got me to like Ted Nugent again.
I did too! A million times better than Halloween Resurrection. It's my fourth favorite Halloween movie, topped only by the first three Halloween films.
I love his Halloween movies, I was actually scared of Michael in his movies. And they were very dark films. The only complaint I have is giving Michael an Origin story and explaining him
Yeah he was, he was actually intimidating so I don't understand why rob zombie's version gets so much hate, yeah part two was a gore fest but the first one was really good.
Part of what makes Michael Myers scary is that he’s like, a regular sized person. It’s hard to explain, but having him be so huge kind of takes out the mystery.
@@dhi1145 the way i see it, him being massive makes it worse. yeah a normal guy walking is scary, but a massive guy who could twist your head backwards in some raggedy old mask. that’s shit your pants terrifying to me
I love his first remake, but despised parts of the second. The visions, or dreams, of young Michael and his mom with the white horse, showing his face at the end - didn’t like em at all.
The second one was more experimental and while I would definitely watch it over Halloween Resurrection, it's low on the list. His first remake I really enjoy!
I watched his Halloween for the first time a week ago and thought it was: A) Too long B) Had nasty people doing nasty things for no reason than to be nasty (In other words they didn't add to the plot/mythos, just upped the run time) C) Michael didn't seem to be going back for his sister until the movie randomly decided that's what he was doing. How did he know who she was or how to find her? D) Michael messing with his victims felt out of place. The horror of Michael is that he just kills. It's not a game. It's not like he has a goal or can be reasoned with. He's the fucking terminator. He doesn't get satisfaction from taunting and toying with prey. He kills, then moves on, then kills, then moves on. He doesn't put on sheets to pretend to be someone's BF, string up victims to put pumpkins on their heads, etc. E) The kills never felt fun or had much gore. The camera didn't focus on the actual kill as much as the movie relied on fake blood afterwards, with maybe one or two exceptions. The only thing I liked was Michael in the hospital as a child with the masks and when Michael as an adult would start wrecking shit, tearing down doors and walls and ceilings just going apeshit. Overall it was a 5/10 Meh movie that I'll gladly never watch again.
You do realize that in the original Halloween (1978) Michael puts a sheet over himself and pretends to be a girl’s boyfriend. So yes, Michael does put sheets on himself and pretend to be someone’s boyfriend lol.
I love the halloween franchise as a whole but I do agree with most of your points about his remake. The only one I can argue with is the last one where you say Michael doesnt mess with his victims but that scheet scene was a call back to the original where Michael did where a bed sheet and killed that girls bf so I mean michale can be theatrical with his kills lol
@@williammelendez2568 Funny you point that out because I had completely forgot about that scene but I rewatched the original in 4k for the first time and saw that and went "oh I'm dumb" lol but it still feels like a weird decision even for Carpenter to do in the original but thats just me.
It's too long because the studio had him reshoot the ending. The movie originally ends with Myers killed by police in front of the house. They added on reshoots of Myers getting up and going after Laurie again. I agree it's too long and it's because of the studio wanting that protracted ending in my opinion.
@@JayceKeller728 Yeah I recently rewatched it since I picked up the 4k steelbook and it reminded me they did that. I will admit I'm a big dumb dumb. Not sure why but I always thought of Michael as how I describe him in the original comment, just a ruthless killing psychopath who has no reason to mess with his victims but that's just my take on what he should be? I think I took an issue with Rob's version of the sheet scene because Michael is comically much larger and it's obviously not her BF and she's like "stop messing around" thinking it's him lol. I literally laughed at the expectation that we're to believe that she believes that's her BF. It's not as cheesily done or obvious in the original in my opinion.
The first one humanized Michael Myers and explored his making in a way that made it scarier. The idea of a homicidal maniac disguised as your neighbor's kid is more plausible, which seeds the imagination of paranoid irrational fear fantasies. It's a side effect of parenting. To enhance it with an appetite for psychologically penetrating horror films is something I doubt many regular people could hang with. I would definitely want that guy on my zombie apocalypse urgent response squad.
In a John Carpenter interview, (director or original Halloween) he said Zombie literally lied about the meddling here...didn’t even happen. Then he called him a piece of shit lol
Yeah everything he puts out his weird and different than a lot of horror, even if his films aren't the best he at least tries to make an interesting horror film
He thinks exploitive badly lit violence is horror. No subtlety or tension and it's just to obvious every time that the bad dialogue is just middle ground for more lame violence porn. He just doesn't get horror.
I loved then and kinda preferred them. He humanized Michael. You got more than a guy with a mask who doesn't talk murking ppl. It explained how he got there...it showed the murders as a kid and even his time locked up. Part 2 was weird in parts but the characters being screwed up like they actually experienced a murderer trying to kill them was spot on but the mom and all the weird ghost stuff was off for me. Murders were great tho. Was a bit savage
i was just thinking. damon dash would be great on the rogan podcast. i'm no dame fan, but he likes to talk. he has a chip on his shoulder. it would be very entertaining.
The visuals and cinematography were great in RZ version of halloween. Could have been wonderful if he cleaned up the trashy language and characters a little more. The 2007 halloween felt like a trashy beat for beat remake studio grab with just a little added back story for Myers. I actually enjoyed RZ's Halloween 2 more than the first. The second one felt more original and up his alley. I really liked the psychological aftermath deep dive into the characters and how realistic trauma is for some after those events.
I like how they highlighted on his childhood. But I think they made Michael a serial killer more than “the shape” or pure evil. I think that’s the scariest Michael Myers though
See this is the problem right. You like the first one? Well Rob zombie was forced to copy the original Halloween almost beat for beat but have a little Rob zombie to it with the dialogue and michaels back story. The second film they let Rob zombie do what he does best and it was pretty good as long as you know you're watching a Rob zombie movie.
Saw an interview with John Carpenter where he was asked about Rob's version of Halloween. In a nutshell John said Rob disrespected him and was a jerk. Wondering if that story is true or just Carpenters opinion/view of Zombie?
Zombie made it sound like John was really cold and short with him when he asked for his blessing to remake Halloween. John said Zombie's claim that he was rude wasn't true.
I love John Carpenter, but his Halloween is one of the most overrated generic horror movies I have ever seen. I will never understand how that movie became so iconic. I hate to say it but overall I think Rob Zombie's version is much deeper and thought-provoking.
@@Billy_Lenz that’s because you’re missing context for the time. Halloween 1 is generic by today’s standards, but that’s only because every slasher you’ve ever seen ripped it off! It was the first great slasher film, that’s why.
It’s not true and Carpenter later said they buried the hatchet. Rob was nothing but positive about Carpenter when he was promoting the film, Carpenter heard the wrong thing and attacked Rob.
Zombie’s Halloween movies sucked. Michael Myers is supposed to be pure evil incarnate. Zombie turned him into the stereotypical serial killer. He was bullied as a kid, tortured small animals, his stepdad beat him, his mom was a whore, etc. And he made him like 8 feet tall for whatever reason.
Joshua Reiss Yea the critics have been horribly wrong on many movies too, so there’s that. Rob did a great job with Halloween, I think ppl get wrapped up in nostalgia- and looking back with rose tinted glasses.
Nebulous Tooth i loved the direction of the second movie. a few things weren’t good, but i thought it was creative and unique. the myers with the hood and half torn mask was badass.
Halloween 2 was one of the worst sequels of all time. Only reason Sherri Moon still has a job is cause Rob directs her. No one else would hire that woman for her acting
I thought hills have eyes was deeper than we were shown like how the original star wars had such depth to idea an set design. There's soo much more to this hills that wasn't put on screen. Hills needs a reboot that starts like rejects with a thousand fucking cops looking up at the hills.
They did a remake of Hills have Eyes in the mid 2000's and I thought it was much better than the original. I think it's those kinds of movies people should be focused on remaking, not Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Some good remakes would be: Phantasm, Scanners, Pet Sematary and Children of the Corn.
I loved both Robs Halloween films..especially Halloween 2.. he made it very different and very gritty his visions remind me of a cross between Texas chainsaw and last house on the left.
Honestly rob zombie Halloween movie is underrated, I really love watching that movie because it’s so different and more dark scenes , Makes Micheal more strong and scarier
This was the scariest halloween I've ever seen. I have never been more terrified of michael and thats saying something because I was a full grown adult watching it.
I totally agree, I watched it when it first came out and I was 10 and it fucked me up. To this day I still think it is one of the most terrifying slashers out
