Strange year, last french open and I think us open I think the French I can understand ,but the us open ,12 years without winning it if he had kept on winning there he would be close to 30 slams
Why do we, Federer fans, feel his triumphs as well as his pains and defeats profoundly? There's something about Roger that's just irresistible and addictive. Maybe because he's a humble, caring, talented, gorgeous and peRFect human being!
Nadal fan here, and I think Roger deserves this title more than anyone that year. Look at the emotion he emanated as he kneeled down on the ground. I'm so glad that he won this to complete the career slam.
Most people act as if Roger didn't deserve enough credit for being such an outstanding all surface player. It's a remarkable thing for Roger to have won even if Rafael wasn't there.
I'm a big Rafa fan but I'm so happy Roger got this title. I feel with his all-surface awesomeness, Roger deserved at least 2 FOs; he was so good that he made 5 FO finals but he had the misfortune of continually running into a fellow all-time great and the greatest player on clay in history, Rafa. Until I saw this video I didn't know what a nail-biting path Roger had to his 2009 FO crown: dropping 6 sets before the final, coming through 2 very tight 5 setters, playing 6 tiebreakers and winning 5, being a point away (against Haas) from being served out of the tournament in straight sets ... Roger really showcased his phenomenal movement, defence and heart in this tournament.
In Agassi's defense it was his spine that ended his career, he was born with the issue he talks about it at length in his book. I think if not for his back he wouldn't have stopped(not saying he could have played anywhere near as long as Fed)
The greatest moment ever in Roland Garros...Forever wedged in my brain. I even remember where I was, who I was with, what I was drinking...This moment made me cry too😭💗. This added to his GOAT status and you can see how it really meant to him. One of his greatest battle to being the GOAT is winning one of Roland Garros championship🔥 That was really emotional &also my most glorious birthday celebration ever👀🎉
At 12:48 we know now from a 2019 interview with Tommy Haas that this was the point that turned everything around for Federer during the French open...down two sets and facing break point in the third set (fourth round I think), Fed went for a massive inside-out forehand and Tommy says in the interview that it shocked him. Tommy thought it would go out and was amazed by Fed's boldness during a huge moment. Tommy said if Fed missed that forehand, he thinks it was over and he would have won in straight sets.
It's truly incredible how one point - one shot, can drastically change a tournament let alone history. So many points and shots that totally changed everything, obviously we can name some famous ones but this one is up there. Really fascinating
I perfectly remember where I was and the emotion which came up for this final whereas I did absolutely not give a shit about nadal’s 135 roland garros titles. I think it is exactly the same for all tennis fans
Djokovic fans have to be really glad Nadal was playing at a very insane level at a very young age (2005-2009), because without that happening while him being 17, 18, 19 years of age, Federer would have run away with literally every tournament and won like 5 or 6 more GS at the time. He was the second best clay courter of that time already anyway. He lost 1 semifinal and 3 finals at the french (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively), AO 2009 and Wimbledon 2008. By 2010 Nadal was consolidated, and much more mature and experienced so not really counting those years afterwards.
In Tennis, if your good, your good doesn't matter that much if your teenager or in your 20's. Although ofcourse your much better when your at 23-26. My point is, Nadal wasn't the first player to show elite level at those age. Mcenroe, Becker to name a few who had their best days at those age bracket (18-22). Being older is much harder though, so that credit goes to Federer in that case...
No, we are glad that Djokovic stopped Nadal from breaking all Federer's records so that Nole can be G.O.A.T He is only 1 year younger than Nadal. Since 2011 Novak has won 18 slams, 31 masters 1000, 4 ATP finals, and spend 325+ weeks at number 1. Nadal and Federer TOGETHER have won 15 slams, 28 masters 1000, 1 ATP finals, and 132 weeks at number 1.
@@Milanche87 Two things: 1- there is no definitive GOAT, because Djokovic didn't play in the 60s, 70s, 80s, etc.. Djokovic is the best of the last 10 years. That I am ok with. 2- The differences between Djokovic, Nadal and Federer are infimal. So no, this GOAT debate is just dumb. End of story.
@@samy29987 You are comparing level of tennis played in 60's, 70's and 80's with today!? LOL Those matches look like recreative game comparing with today, by every aspect. Federer put the bar very high but he won most of the titles and spend weeks at number 1 against Roddick, Safin, Hewit, Gonzales, Philippoussis, Gonzales, Baghdatis.. Average players if you compare them with Novak and Nadal at their highest peak. He only won Garros thanks to Soderling, his score against Nadal on clay is disaster. Djokovic had much stronger competition, although people from the west don't like him there is no denying against numbers. We will see what future brings but no doubt Novak is the best so far.
@@Milanche87 Djokovic was usually winning 1 slam a year from 2008-2014 but in 2015 (when Nadal had his disaster year) he started winning everything. I don’t want to disrespect Novak but more say that the comp argument is stupid.
Definitely his most satisfying win at least as a fan to watch with how dominant Nadal was on clay I’m glad fed was able to get at least one major at Roland Garros before he retired
Compare this to any of Nadal's French Open titles and it's like night and day - as great as Federer is on clay, Nadal makes it look absurdly easy to win a French Open.
@@sakthiashwin I'm a Murray fan, but Federer and Nadal are the two greatest players ever. Their legacies will forever be intertwined, and they make each others' achievements greater by having played together. There's no need to be upset :)
Look at this man standing ON the base line even on clay ... its really what sets him apart from the other two ... I mean its a sight for sore eyes when tennis is played from 5 m behind the baseline ... look at how Roger dances on it ... it is really and truly a thing of immaculate Beauty
I thought Roger took on an easy route to the finals. Each round gradually got tougher and gave him a challenge. Great respect for Roger. The greatest player in the history of tennis. He is the tennis.
Federer is not tennis on clay with only 1 Roland Garros title. Nadal is tennis on clay with 11 Roland Garros. It follows that Federer is not tennis overall. Plus, Federer is not better than Djokovic on hard courts, so he is far from being a synonym of tennis on hard courts.
@@srkucrickk Fed has 1 WTF title more and has 1 less AO and 5 US opens. How many does Djokovic have again? 3 So total HC GS for Djokovic is 10 Total HC GS for Federer is 11 so there you have it.
vivek s Djokovic is 6 years younger than federer and is only one hardcourt GS behind him. So its very likely that djokovic will overtake federer in terms of Hardcourt GS.
Fro some Reasons, i would Rate his French Open 2009 as slightly Higher and MORE memorable because he showed his true fighting spirit. let's admit he is a born genius but what he had to do to complete the Career Slam and how he came about it. Clutch forehand against Hass. not to forget his grueling 5 Set against Del Potro - and when he wins against Soderling - when he falls - tears streaming down his check. Damn, that was emotional
Federer was down Big in Multiple Matches during this Tournament...Played his BEST when against the Ropes...Not sure how many Drop shots he hits during this Tournament but they were so Beautiful...
@Shinobu Tsurubushi Like Djokovic's RG worths something... Nadal would have been beated even by Nishikori that year. Nobody defeated a great Nadal fair and square.
@Shinobu Tsurubushi the same thing about Rafa beating Roger in Wimbledon, you Rafa´s fan always forget what´s convenient for you, Roger was with the mononucleosis but he never complain about it like Rafa does EVERYTIME that he loses
The Most emotional Grand slam Win for Great Roger ? may be ... But as his ardent fan it was super emotional, satisfying for me, to say the least ! even looking back 10 yrs it clearly stands out.. #Respect #RF !
Great video man! Thank you! I never realized Federer was down two sets to love to Haas. Then beating Del Potro is always tricky for Federer. Great tournament for Federer despite Nadal not being able to beat Nadal in the final.
God damn I can’t remember this Acususo match but I remember I was in school when Federer was facing Del Potro and I couldn’t even concentrate in my class for the whole day
Let's win the 2nd French Open ! ! ! 9:13 WHAT A POINT, Federer's running speed. . the drop shot impossible to reach for other players. His face after winning reminds me of Sampras . .
Rafa GOAT mate that’s not his point No matter how good Nadal or anyone else is Chris is simply marvelling at the fact that Federer was called ‘old’ 10 years ago and today he’s still winning titles
@@teatla4801 You mean Del Potro..... ON CLAY? 😂😂😂 Then Del Potro is totally irrelevant when Rafa beats him in USO17 (who had beaten Federer in the previous round lol) just because his rank was lower coming back from injury. The hypocrissy.
@@rafagoat575 hypocrisy it seems. Anyone who follows tennis would know how good delpo was in 09, and his struggles after that due to 3 wrist surgeries and another knee surgery. Due to his wrist surgeries, he was never the same player, unable to use his backhand as a weapon like in USO 09, resorting to slices.
Federer was knocked out of 21 Slams by Nadal and Djokovic, including 10 Finals. Hard to imagine how many more trophies he would have held if those two didn't exist.
The point is that Federer established such a record-breaking number of slam titles and the others spen years chasing after him and on improving their games to try toobtain his skills.
The time Nadal got knock-out, all the pressure was multiplied by like a 100 fold for Federer to win the FO lmao, as a fan I was so nervous he will fvck up the chance, this was the only chance.Because He's getting older, Nadal reaching his absolute peak, etc. etc. Not so surprise he had this struggle of a run against lesser opponents (asides Del Potro and Soderling ). He played nervously through out the tournament after that 4th round lol.
Kinda funny to think that out of all the matches, the final was virtually the most one sided. Every other match Fed had to dig deep and get out of trouble. Honestly believe that even tho Nadal was out, it was one of the hardest tournaments he ever had to win.
I love Novak, and I love Johnny Mac, and I love Boris, and I actually kind of love Lendl (Connors, Sampras, Agassi, Murray and the highly overrated, one-surface clay king Nadal are all sourpuss lame cry-baby putzes) but Roger, for all he has done and meant and all his firsts and lasting records, simply is the GREATEST OF ALL TIME, EVER and EVER and EVER.
@MqchaXD at this point u r sounding like u r just making excuses seriously like imagine the amount of mental break down when u r so injury prone like Nadal is n that too in ur prime . Imagine facing so much hatred that Djokovic faced just for standing in Federers way and defeating him fare and square and still not getting the respect he deserves . Like u federer fans will always come up with excuses to make ur GOAT claim which at this point is very much in favour of Djokovic .
As great as he is, he will never beat Nadal at RG, he needed to avoid Nadal to win here, but then again sometimes it works like that and you can only beat who is in front of you!! Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good
No luck in that, Nadal lost fair and square to the very man Federer had to beat so...Can't win every single fucking time, even the king of clay with his 12 RG titles
Lucas Lopes how can you say it wasn’t lucky he avoided Rafa that year? As great a player RF is, his game does not match up well against Rafa on clay. To beat Rafa on clay you have to hit him off the court which very few people can obviously, but that is how Robin Soderling beat Nadal, he had the game that day to do it, cuz he hits BIG all the time, RF does not hit big on clay, and I say this being a huge RF fan!! It’s just in Clay Rogers game does not match up to Rafa game. It’s all about matchups on the ATP tour, every tour player will tell you that. Just because A beat B and B beat C, doesn’t mean that A will beat C....it doesn’t work that way
It is very hard to say luck, its his persistence and and consistency of 5 years. Federer had to be there in the finals to create the chance and he was there in the finals/semifinals last 3/4 years consecutively.
Of Course, He Benefited In 2009 From Nadal Losing There Early. Federer Probably Would Not Have Won The "French Open" Until Today, But He Took His Chance. You Have To Respect That.
Really shows how sports science has changed. Imagine being considered old at 27 and then still playing at a high level when your 40 years old… people will be playing at 50 in the future.
If anyone is debating who the real goat is ,watch the semi final of the us open 2009, it’s probably the best and most perfect game I’ve ever witnessed... 10000000% roger is defo the greatest of all time, not because he’s won grand slams but because when he’s on there’s no player ever that can compete . People’s champion
Struggled? He reached all 4 GS finals that year, won 2 and lost 2. From that alone he had a very good year. Don't remember the rest of that season though.
@@erikelrojo99 Oh ok, my bad. Misunderstood your comment. For sure he struggled to win the french that year. After Nadal lost, he must have felt a lot of pressure within himself thinking it was a massive opportunity to win which is probably why he struggled so much against Haas and Delpo. He definitely earned it for sure.
