These lists should only include albums at least 10 years old. To ensure that these songs withstand the test of time. However, streaming platforms need to figure out how to get artists paid when they are good and weed out the astrpturfers
@howler9171
@howler9171 3 года назад
@@houserhouse 100% agree. It's impossible to tell if an album is among the most sonically influential and culturally significant if it only came out a couple years ago. If people are still talking about an album 10 years after its release then you know it's good. I very highly doubt that any of the picks on this list from 2018 and 2019 are still going to be considered important and worth listening to in 20 years from now. Except for maybe billie eilish. A lot of copycats of her are going to start popping up everywhere within the next couple years

People talk about albums being “influential” and “going down in history.” I see that as an appeal to popularity. The greatest album does not equal the most loved or remembered album. Completely agree. I don't think anyone here (including myself!) could make a top 500 list that music critics would agree with. It is inevitable that people will spot a few albums that seem out of place relative to other albums. Unless you want to rank albums by sales or some measurable statistic, it's impossible to justify your choices and satisfy everyone.

That's actually hilarious considering there's an album called "Best of the Beatles" - however that's a solo project by their first drummer, Pete Best. You see what he did there? Best got thrown out just before Ringo joined, so after the Beatles had their breakthrough he tried to benefit from his connection to them by releasing this record. (Don't mind me if that story was the reason you wrote your comment in the first place. Yeah. I love it when they're like "BEST of ALL TIME!!!" when really they only mean a tiny subset from a small selection of genres across only a few decades from artists that were either American or native English speakers. They could've just made a list titled "500 classics old and modern that we recommend to hard rock, pop and jazz fans", but I guess it's not clickbaity enough. They want to get people's attention and make-a the moolah, for better or for worse. As an American expat living in Europe, who's been exposed to a very large diversity of European and Asian music, such lists are always an anglocentric joke to me. Even then, they have a peculiar affinity for ignoring bands and musicians that weren't or aren't on the spectrum of politically acceptable, i.e. that were anti-capitalist or unpatriotic. That's why CCR is ranked criminally low, Toxicity isn't on there, and neither is any Immortal Technique or Dean Reed album, to say nothing of albums by musicians from socialist or former socialist countries (cold war enemy nations). For a newspaper that likes to pride itself on how open-minded and pro-Marxist it is, the Rolling Stones has a real knack for corporate poptimist bootlicking.

The 2003 version of this list was really important for me as it introduced 15 y/o me to a fuckton of great albums such as "London Calling", "Exile on Main St.", "Pet Sounds" & especially "Nevermind". Even moreso considering the fact that my parents didn't really allow me to access the web freely until I was 17 (meaning that I had to plead my friends to download them for me). So I thank Rolling Stone's list for existing, at least. Now, on to my gripes (cuz why not, everyone else is doing it): 1) As many have pointed out already including Fantano himself, the anglo-centricity of the list is pretty depressing. Couldn't they at least name these lists something like "The 500 Greatest Albums From The English-Speaking World" or "The 500 Greatest Albums From North America & Europe" or something? I swear I wouldn't be offended by it - it would actually be far more honest that way. By naming a list like this "The 500 Greatest Albums OF ALL TIME" (emphasis obviously mine), they're pretty much denying the existence of the world at large outside of the largely-white continents of North America & Europe (despite them ranking that Marvin Gaye album - which I actually love quite a lot - at #1 to understandably keep up with recent social trends towards greater inclusivity & progressivism). I mean seriously - is that Harry Styles album better than "Estudando o Samba" or "Clube da Esquina" in terms of both quality (not-entirely-subjective) & influence (objective)? What about the works of Ravi Shankar or Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan or even A.R. Rahman's blockbuster soundtracks? Is that Drake album REALLY better than anything put out by Ali Farka Toure or Toumani Diabate - arguably some of the best musicians of the 20th & 21st century? I'm sure that music connoisseurs all around the world could name hundreds of better albums that could easily rival or even beat many of the entries on the list. Again, I understand that they'd instinctively favour something more familiar to their ears than, say, field recordings of folk songs from some Oceanic tribe (though the exclusion/under-representation of UK dub/reggae & US jazz is really suspect) - but they don't even do THAT well. I'm not even talking about the exclusion of rock/pop stuff from places like Japan (Boredoms, Les Razilles Denuedes, Shonen Knife), Mexico (Cafe Tacvba), Russia (Auktyon, Kino) or even, say, Spain (Paco de Lucia, fucking Los Planetas???) - they (almost, since you HAVE to include fucking Lorde and AC/DC amirite) COMPLETELY fucking ignore the white & anglo-centric antipodes! Where's The Saint's debut? Where's Radio Birdman? Where's The Avalanches (this exclusion was really surprising for me as I thought the younger crop of Rolling Stone writers would at least love the fuck out of "Since I Left You")? Where's The Drones? You guys found the space to include so many superfluous compilations but not a SINGLE one to represent the incredibly influential Dunedin scene (via The Clean or The Chills)? So this list is not only culturally biased, but it's also geographically short-sighted to boot. Perhaps the sample pool used to compile the list ("[...] more than 300 artists, producers, critics and music-industry figures [...]") is to blame slightly for it, or maybe it's their superiority complex that drove them to label these 500 albums as the greatest that all of music has had to offer in the album format. One can only hope that their push towards greater inclusivity - indicated by their aforementioned #1 spot - also gradually extends to more foreign cultures in the next version of the list at the very least. 2) Speaking of inclusivity, one noticeable difference in this new edition of the list is its noticeably poptimist slant. While I can definitely understand the reason behind the change up (previous iterations of the list have been widely accused of being overwhelmingly rockist, and understandably so), it also results in many popular western genres, styles & even subcultures being under-represented or completely forgotten. The most glaring example of this is metal (only 7 entries on the list) & punk (nothing more extreme than Black Flag's "Damaged" to be found across its 500 entries) - these 2 genres alone contain multitudes of different styles & subcultures that end up being completely erased in way (given that the list itself has become a canon-defining institution, and many more people are likely to explore newer stuff from lists such as these than go a bit deeper). What about electronic music too? From the world of club/house music (and I'm just talking about its North American & British variants here) to dubstep/garage to even newer forms such as vaporwave, the entire genre is woefully underrepresented here as well (or rather, not meaningfully represented at all as I go through it now). All of this contributes to my main gripe with poptimism: that it's eventually just rockism, but inverted. But that entire debate is a messy can of worms in its own right, and I do not want to get into that just now. 3) What makes a "great" album? Are the selections all based on objective criteria such as musical/cultural influence and/or sales that are balanced reasonably with perceptions of artistry or quality (since, surely, it'd be named "Our 500 Favorite Albums Of All Time" otherwise?)? If so, assuming the list's specialty to be rock/folk/pop/rap/rnb etc- a) Most of the entries from the 2010s make no sense being here, as they're not even old enough to have their impacts felt yet. b) The exclusion of truly influential albums such as "Anthology Of American Folk Music", "Blind Joe Death", "In The Court of the Crimson King", "Silver Apples", "Trout Mask Replica", "Oar", "Tago Mago", "Neu!", "Deceit", "Spirit of Eden", "Spiderland", "Underground Vol. 1 1991-94", "Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol. 1", "The Money Store" and literally DOZENS of others is considerably baffling (even if, on their own, the socio-cultural impacts for most of them were largely non-existent at the times of their respective releases, since influences all work in mysterious ways). Wow this is pretty long already.

Thanks for your input (honestly thought i'd only find memes in the comment section). It also struck me that it is really popcentric and US/UK english speaking orientated. Of course rankings are ultimately always biased. I personally like the way some websites moved from yearly rankings to overall "what we liked this year without ranking it" (resident advisor for example). That way it avoids those stupid ranking where Taylor Swift can be better ranked than Kraftwerk. "Hello fellow kids, look at how I celebrate Taylor Swift's greatness." "Grandpa, we enjoy her music, but stating that Pink Floyd isn't as artistically significant..." "Pink Floyd is overrated." "Ok, grandpa."

I don't trust Rolling Stone's opinion in general, it feels like they just have the safest opinions possible and always stay far away from anything resembling a niche genre i bet Pitchfork could make a much more interesting list of this type (before anyone replies with "pitchfork bad" - I know. but you have to admit they give a lot more love to more obscure records and genres than any other publication I'm aware of)

I really hate Rolling Stone because they always go for easy opinions and then they just give a shit rating without any valid justification whatsoever just to stand out a bit

I like Pitchfork because they have never given a Clipping album above a 48. Which is rad and cool of them specifically.

I never bought a single issue of Rolling Stone after they put the Boston Bomber on the cover of their magazine and I regret nothing. Fuck them.

Nah pitchfork would go in the opposite direction, they love to jack off Kanye and Arcade Fire and some choice indie acts but I feel like their opinions on older music would either be dumb or copy/paste rateyourmusic top 100 bullshit

@Sam Myers i said Soad is underrated not Toxicity, and I meant the album is a materpiece not the song, if you talk about the song, I think they have better songs, but imo Toxicity has the recognition that deserves

Sign "o" the times by Prince isn’t just an album, it’s an artistic reconstitution, the breeze you respire, it’s a motive for existence, a departure from this atrocious cosmos, an embosom from a cherished one, it’s a moment for history books, a body of finest craftsmanship

@Luke fair enough but it’s not something you can choose to buy into or choose to not buy into, his first few albums were, Lead vocals by price, backing vocals by Prince, all instruments played by Prince, mixed and mastered under guidance of Prince, and that were the first few at age 19 to 21, just got better from their till the late 80s. Can’t touch him man

Harry styles and close to the edge should not be said in the same sentence.

Actually, they should. That sentence being “fine line by Harry styles doesn’t hold a candle to close to the edge by yes”. That’s a sentence where they can both be said.
