At a Foreign Relations Committee hearing today on alliances and partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, U.S. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) engaged in an exchange with the witnesses about the likelihood of a Chinese military invasion of Taiwan-a trusted partner of the United States in advancing peace, prosperity, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. He also emphasized the importance of the U.S. linking arms with its allies to push back against China’s aggression.

As a Left-leaning American, I appreciate how Senator Romney calmly approaches problems. I think if I were to cast a vote to elect another elderly president, Mitt Romney would solemnly receive my vote, no matter if there were another more dignified elder statesman to contest him. However, I do believe that in this time of division and chaos, we need a young leader in the prime of their political career who isn't an extremist and is loyal to the USA, no matter what. We need the youth to be more engaged in the future of their country, because if they aren't, the corporations will control everything. This country is the most successful capitalist nation in history. Do you think all the world's billionaires will let it fail because no young leader arises to America's challenges? No, they will put forth their own candidates for office and reap the profits. America is a nation that is supposed to be governed for and by the people, but nobody asked what would happen if the only people interested in participating in said government, were the people who benefited from one that only served the people who bought their vote. I believe in congressional representatives, senators, and presidents as being public servants who earn a humble salary, but I think those days are over. The most we can hope for is someone with their head screwed on tightly, man or woman.

Gotta disagree; you need experience more than you simply need youth. But you are hitting the nail on the head with identifying the corporate problem. Corporate donations to politicians is the problem in both USA (as well as in Canada for me) as its intention is to sway policy away from societal interest towards that of the corporate donor. What democracies need to do it replace corporate donations with a per-vote subsidy. Get a vote; get a dollar (or some amount). If you added up all the corporate donations and turned that equivalent amount into a tax (and distributed those same funds based on votes earned) you could argue it would be largely neutral in impact. MINUS the corporate influence.

The international right to navigate the China sea, in which Xi, wanted to own isn’t right. Xi, is acting like his fathe’s predecessor Mao, who supported from the start communism was established in China. UN should change the name of China sea, so this man Xi, stopped claiming the sea, which the first spanish navitor named the sea. Now, they invented history that they owned the sea trying to show the fake make and even adding to the name as 9-line for the start that almost included all the southeast asia areas and even Japan’s island, soon that 9-line could even changed to 9-100.🤣🤣🤣

It's important to consider that the US is not the only variable in Beijing's calculus, nor is Beijing's declining demographics. There is something worse for Xi Jinping than tolerating Taiwan -- and that's attempting an invasion and failing. Look at China's "no limits" buddy, Russia. Invading is easier said than done, and can delegitimize a regime. Xi is likely aware of that

You Americans are so ignorant of other countries's history or geography. You don't know Jack about China or Chinese history or culture This is a civilization state that has seen everything under the sun. This is not the first time China had to invade Taiwan after a Civil War. During the 17th century the Manchus invaded Mainland China and defeated the ruling Ming Dynasty. The last Emperor of the Ming Dynasty hanged himself. The Manchus then established the Qing Dynasty in Mainland China. The Remaining forces of the Ming Dynasty led by a General all fled Mainland China to Taiwan and established their headquarters there from which they hoped to use a base to launch an reinvasion of the Mainland. Sounds familiar? Cause thst is exactly what happened in the 19th century between the Communists and the Nationalists during the Chinese Civil war Back in the 1600s the Manchus led Qing Dynasty then launched a amphibious campaign to conquer Taiwan that lasted over 22 years. I repeat 22 years. They never stopped coming for 22 years until they were eventually successful in conquering the Island of Taiwan. This premonition of what would happen later in the 19 century when the Nationalists and the Communists went to war with each other in a huge civil war in the Mainland The Nationalists were defeated and fled to Taiwan. The fact is the civil war in Mainland China in the 20th century between the communists and the Nationalists also lasted over 23 years and cost the lives of almost 20 million people. This also shows that when China goes to war they go for war that last a long long long time. Entire generations The Question is the United States willing to go into a full scale war with a country that has a history fighting wars that last decades that cost the lives of tens of millions of people? It gets even worse. China sent a balloon to try US. China sent a spacecraft to Mars. China sent a spacecraft to the dark side of the moon. China put a space station in space. China sent hypersonic missiles that circumvented the globe at low altitude 2x. Meaning that China has the ability to strike deep into the continental United States. If the US goes to war with China don't think those 3 oceans that have kept you safe for 2 world wars are going to keep you safe any longer. Because if the US or any country strikes into Mainland China I can assure you that Chinese missiles and drones will come back and strike deep into the United States Mainland and American cities, centers of American industrial, economic and political power. The question is this. Is the United States willing to sacrifice Chicago, Los Angeles, NYC, San Francisco, Seattle, Houston, Washington DC, Boston, Miami, for Taiwan? If China ever goes to war over Taiwan they are not going to go for one attempt and it's over, let's go home. If China goes to war over Taiwan they will launch an all out war thst will consist of many invasions thst will last years, maybe eben decades. They will never stop until they eventually succeed. They will be relentless. If they fought a 22 years amphibious campaign to conquer Taiwan in the 1600s and a 23 years war in the Mainland in the 1920s all the way to the late 1940s. If you think they will go for one hit and it's over you are utterly dilusional. If You think they are just going to go for a single invasion attempt, and go home. You guys are utterly dilusional. It's gets even worse. China's industrial capacity is larger than the United States plus the next 8 countries after the US combined. China manufacturers 12x more steel than the United States. 200x more shipping tonnage than the United States, graduated 7x to 8x more engineers, scientists, mathematicians and technicians than the US. China has the entire population of the United States plus Japan plus 1 Billion people. If China goes to war for Taiwan they will mobilize their entire industrial manufacturing capacity into full scale war production. They will literally out manufacture the United States in weapons and ammunition into oblivion. They will be able to replace whatever losses they suffer at a rate exponentially larger than the United States. They will mobilize their massive population to raise an enormous military the likes the world has never seen. You might be looking at the first 50 million, 80 million, 90 million military in world history. And China will have Russia, North Korea, Iran and the other countries in central Asia support in additional industrial military production, natural resources, energy, food, raw materials and weapons. This is a war the United States will never be able to win. Taiwan to China is what South Vietnam was to North Vietnam. The US sent over 3 million American boys to Vietnam over the period of 10 years to keep North Vietnam from taking over South Vietnam. Thr US dropped more bombs in Vietnam than all of the bombs dropped on Japan and Germany in WWII. How did that war go for the US. North Vietnam only had 13 million people during the Vietnam War. No two countries are more alike in all of Asia than Vietnam and China. For Taiwan China will fight to the end. This is the most contentious nationalist topic for the Chinese people. Not the Chinese government, but for the Chinese people. The reunification of the Chinese nation is seen as a holy war or struggle by the Chinese people. Nothing is dearer to the Chinese people than the reunification of Taiwan. I heard many many Chinese of all walks of life say that if war ever comes over the reunification of Taiwan that they will drop everything and join the PLA to reunify Taiwan to Mainland China. You Americans don't have a clue of what you are talking about. You have no idea what kind of mess you guys are getting yourself into. Plus you haven't even though about what such a war would have in your own country. You sons, husbands, brothers, nephews, uncles, neighbors, friends will all have to be drafted to fight this war. Full conscription would have to be introduced Your cities and your homes will be bombed to ruble. The war will come right back into your homeland and into your major cities This will be a total war. The biggest, most destructive war in human history and the war will come back into your homeland. Tens of million of your people will become internally displaced. There will be a shortage of everything. You will face hunger and all sorts of deprivation, civil disorder, chaos collapse of civil society will follow. This war will completely destroy your country. That is why I often tell EVERY American I can Don't do this. You have no idea what you are getting into if you get Into a war with China over Taiwan. It will be the end of your country. Millions and Millions of your people will die. Your people will have to endure unimaginable suffering The Chinese have faced such wars many times in their lives. They know what such war is like, but you do not. You will certainly lose. Do not do it.

Go watch a video on the myriad list of reasons china is moving now, but age demographics and giga factory/military investment (Alexander the Great’s Booty based economy lol aka fund an army to the point it doesn’t make sense cuz the real plan is to just rob people at some point lol) are right at the top. How fast did America convert factories to war based production in ww2? China would have chips easily if they needed. This is highly constructive and refreshing to hear. I agree with the factors contributing to the likelihood of a Taiwan invasion. The demographics, current readiness, could almost be considered as part of an XY line chart, with the x-axis as a timeline. demographics trending down and military readiness of China trending up. On that same chart is another line representing Taiwan's ability to deter an invasion. It's plot must be over the other line. Where they intersect, is the point from which China could possibly launch a successful invasion. We must ensure the deterrence line is always very far above The China line. We should also consider the reasons for China's motivations. In the case of the South China Sea, oil and seafood could be shared between the various countries with an agreement which would be a net positive as compared to fighting a multi-trillion dollar war to control those same areas. The Taiwan situation may be more difficult in this respect. If China wants to govern Taiwan just because, Even though the Chinese Communist party has never controlled Taiwan, there may be no peaceful compromise.
@PeterBarnes2
@PeterBarnes2 Месяц назад
Fishing agreements are difficult because of enforceability and how stringent a prescient limit on fishing would be. The PRC is actually notorious for having a huge fleet of privately operated and large fishing ships and transports, which go around for months on end fishing in foreign waters that don't have navies/coast guards to enforce their own regulations. Obviously the CCP would only actually regulate their share of a mutual fishing agreement if they thought it was relevant to the long-term economics of their fishing industry. They could be very heavy-handed if they wanted to, but if it's thought of as "foreign waters," there could be a reasonable excuse. Then again, if the agreement made no direct claims about whether the waters were technically foreign or domestic, they might be forced to pretend they're maintaining some Standard CCP Fishing Regulations in the vicinity of the 'Province of Taiwan.' I guess the other concern would be CCP overregulation infringing on the Taiwanese share, and this could plausibly be the deal-breaker. Hypothetically they could instead opt for profit-sharing rather than sharing the resources, but that's a very negative outcome in terms of the domestic fishing industry of the more limited economic power (presumably Taiwan); which is to say it would not go over well with Taiwanese fishermen. Note as well that under-regulation of PRC fishing does not preclude overregulation of ROC fishing. The alternative arrangement would then be third-party regulation. I don't know how politically plausible an international treaty agreeing to regulation of PRC fishing around Taiwan (with a modest implication of Taiwanese sovereignty, in couched language) by the US Navy (or coastguard?) would be (by which I mean I don't see it happening), but it would certainly require amicable US-CCP relations, at a minimum. Direct US involvement in any such treaty plausibly would.
@tryscience
@tryscience Месяц назад
@@PeterBarnes2 agreed, the fishing would be More difficult to regulate than for example oil where you've got large rigs and tankers of known volume connecting to them etc. I've heard that China often goes just offshore from the Philippines with various fishing boats, unauthorized. I think that's got to come to a screeching halt. But yeah the giant ships that visit the trawlers and offload their catch, it's just an extreme rate of harvesting that is not sustainable. China needs a wake up call and stay out of the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. China whines about a gentleman's agreement from an earlier administration, about not reinforcing the ship on the reef, but conveniently forget their own pledge not to militarize mischief reef and other islands, built up in violation of international conventions.
@PeterBarnes2
@PeterBarnes2 Месяц назад
@@tryscience The issue is that it's a very easy relationship to sit in: Unscrupulous PRC fishing companies headed by whoever cares the least about sustainability (any company that does care will be driven out by the free market) will have few moral qualms driving boats into foreign waters. Meanwhile CCP regulators would need a reason to think other peoples' fish is their problem, and may have motivations, be it bureaucratic or corrupt, to ignore the concern. On that matter, attaching the issue to PRC's reputation (making a big deal about it internationally) could motivate quick action, which I think the CCP would be capable of. Maybe some kind of discussion with Belt & Road countries about their fishing industries...
@tryscience
@tryscience Месяц назад
@@PeterBarnes2 Yes, I like that idea. I'm convinced the Belt and road initiative is the large scale equivalent of an ultra high interest rate credit card given to someone short on cash. A means to exert future leverage against those countries, such as to push them to allow Chinese bases on their soil, where they otherwise would not be interested in doing so.

What needs to happen vis-à-vis to China is for everyone to start the conversation about what we in the west can do to bond together with the middle kingdom. When I say bond together, I mean we do not need to be slapping China's wrist on the international stage any more than we need to tell Prime Minister Netanyahu how to run his war. The thing is that there should be all kinds of things being discussed about how well things are going between China and America. You of course have the right to speak about what a seizure of Taiwan would do to destabilize the civilized world. This can be said in matter-of-fact tones and China's military build-up can be spoken about with concern, but we should realize that if the words coming into the middle kingdom are about sharing the wealth of the earth together and in harmony, there will be a return on the investment. It can be left between the lines to say that Taiwan is a water lily in the pond of international relations that is a national heritage symbol and cannot be disturbed. This would be enough to freeze Chinese ambitions in the short run and shelf plans of military action in the long run. Let us speak of the wonders the Chinese have brought and are bringing and will continue to bring to civilization. To recap: put everything in peace making terms to the Chinese and let the hidden meaning of keeping the world as it is be what is always present.

So, this is ( in my opinion), what China perceives right now, that it could not take on the USN in the South China Sea, with any expectation of victory, this is why they are feverishly building their military, Navy in particular, but the X factor is Japan, which has a very powerful, formidable navy in it's own right.

Taiwan returned to China in 1945 but has not been part of the PRC. So the PRC is in no position to “recover” it since Japan already gave it back

Waiting out the USA makes no sense for China due to demographic issues that will limit manpower and damage their economy. China will not invade in the short term for 3 reasons. 1. Geography / there is a 100 miles of ocean between them. 4 times the distance of D-Day and much tougher water to cross. 2. Transport - the Chinese lack a sufficient trip transport ships. PLA Navy sea lift capacity is generously set at 50k when they need 1.5 million troops to invade. 3. Logistics - under ideal circumstances the PLA lacks the bandwidth to refuel and resupply 2.5 million trips on a foreign shore. And in a war with the USA will not provide ideal circumstances for resupply.

I dont vote Republican for President, but I did vote for Romney because he always had intellect and candor that no other politician possesses in this day. Top bad voters chose arrogant Obama. Mr. Romney will be dearly missed, I dread the day he leaves, leaving one fewer voice of reason in Congress.

Post WW2 the US fought small and weak nations like Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Grenada etc. Current China is not in that level; be it economically, technoligically or militarily. All those who spoke need to understand that China has the capability to attack deep into America and cause a lot of damage and deaths; though for them any such retaliation is not an issue as they are used that due to Mao's policies of the past
