@ranaldthurgood4875
@ranaldthurgood4875 2 года назад
@@jeremyblack3394 Levon and Ronnie were from neighbouring towns in Arkansas. When Levon was about sixteen and not legally allowed in drinking establishments, he started playing with Ronnie in bars anyway. Circa 1960, Ronnie based himself in Canada, and Levon moved up with him. Ronnie recruited a few south Ontario musicians who, with Levon, became "The Hawks", Ronnie's back-up band. The Hawks later left Ronnie to go on their own, and the rest is history.

@@ranaldthurgood4875 I liked the sax player! I have a hunch it might b Garth Hudson! Anyone know for sure ?
@ranaldthurgood4875
@ranaldthurgood4875 Год назад
@@chairlesnicol672 My suspicion is that this video was from before the Ontario lads joined the band. A website called Jambase, for what it's worth, says that the TV clip above was made in 1959, and "The clips...were filmed before Robbie, Rick, Richard and Garth joined The Hawks." It's not likely Garth, but I'm not placing any money on that. Levon, being Ronnie's Arkansas neighbour, joined his band before the others. The Wikipedia article about Ronnie Hawkins tells a bit about who he played with before The Band members.

Hawkins should be much better known. He went up to Canada from The South in the 1950s so nobody in The U.S. heard of him, but he inspired all of the Canadian members of the band. Hawkin's drummer here, Levon Helm, was from the South, so he already knew how to make rock'roll, but Garth Hudson, Rick Danko, and Robbie Robertson were Canucks, so Hawkins gave them all a crash course in popular music. Then, Bob Dylan heard about Hawkin's Band, and the rest is history.
