When deciding where your roof windows should go, it’s important to remember they directly impact many aspects of your build. Poorly placed windows can mean you have less room for solars, or sometimes it can impact the overhead unit location INSIDE your van. There are a lot of things to take into account, so this week we dive into the rational behind our decision making, (aka, we prioritized solar dimensions) and also how we plan to customize each of these windows to be the best it can be overall.

We’re Ladi (from Czechia) & Margaret (from USA) and we’re a location independent couple of 4+ years, currently spending 2020 in eastern Czech Republic due to the pandemic. Both of us WISH that van builds only consisted of building, but truth be told, most of the work at this stage is PLANNING. We spent this week focused on our roof layout, always prioritizing the dimensions of our solar panels to make sure all the power we want can fit on top first! Hope this video is helpful & interesting for all those interested in vanlife! If not, well, maybe you at least enjoyed the adorable ending? ;) Thanks for watching!

To be honest I find you planning almost more interesting than watching you build it. Do you have a special supplier for the roof windows? Unfortunately, I think the german TÜV (vehicle safety check) would shoot you on the spot if you installed those windows here in Germany XD

We did some read-up on regulations (I, Margaret, am a bit of a worry-wart when it comes to following the rules..) and I looked for ANY level of regulation and it seemed to be pretty non-existent for DIY campervan roof windows. I totally understand that each country is different, though, and Germany is one of the toughest in Europe regulation wise. We'll make sure to keep everyone updated if it bites us in the butt, but for now feeling confident it won't

@@igorpuschner786 A German manufacturer just showcased an RV with a convertible top called the Skydancer Apero Cabrio Camper . It's top opening is far larger than what they have for both windows combined. If they got that certified with a retractable fiberglass (?) roof section the size of a large mattress their van should be fine. Who would have thought of retracting to roof so you can sleep under the stars?

@@ladiandmargaret I haven't looked the exact regulations up yet, but usually, if you install anything that could be relevant for the safety of the vehicle, in Germany it needs a special license. But this is just if you have your vehicle registered in Germany, so it shouldn't apply to you. Also, if the window (I'm talking about the large roof windows which I really find a great idea) is designed for vehicle use, it should most likely have that license.

@@douglascampbell9809 The convertible RV is specially designed for that. IIRC to pass the TÜV certification your vehicle must be able to fall on the roof without endangering the passengers. Also, glass in vehicles may not splinter when it breaks. I guess this would also apply to roof windows.

I have been watching this entire build series - and I am a lifelong DIY self taught "maker". Ladi is a "NATURAL". Just incredibly "gifted" with the intelligence - motivation and will to SOLVE any problem and build anything it seems. And his attention to detail and heading off future problems now - before they happen is insane. He could easily start a van conversion business - or be a builder ( Tiny Homes ? ) or even an engineer or a product designer. It is a pleasure just to watch him work. Seriously.

Don't worry about showing mostly planning, this is the best ! What are the challenges, what are the objectives you set. I think you are going to make such a great Van ! What I like is that you do not make compromises, you know what you want and make it work. Ladi's skill range is impressive, ppm to control the fans, and also the screen fitted on the dashboard was impressive. 3D printing, ebikes, woodworking, solar systems. Honestly your content goes beyond vanlife I reckon

Wow that’s awesome; I added a skylight earlier this year and this summer the van became an oven; I don’t have any windows in the living area so I wanted the extra light but after this summer I took it out and cover the hole it just wasn’t worth losing the insulation but wow this is a great idea 💡

The tiny home omaze raffle, is built by a company in Ohio, they are great guys and great builders. Quality work and in the few years they have been in business they have made it to all sectors of the tiny world and have even built a tiny Cracker Barrel. Modern tiny living is the name and I’d be surprised if you have not seen one of their models already.

Hey, a question I know the answer to! It is a sprayer, for spraying pesticides/herbicides on crops. It is tall so that the crops fit underneath and the tires are skinny to fit between the rows and to reduce soil compaction. Ladi looks like he is living his best life - the man loves details :)

The optimum angle for solar panels is 20 degrees from horizontal so you may not need it to go up to 40/45, although I understand if you're in a moving van it may help to have the additional angle!
