Great job! We are learning this together. Can't believe how smooth your graphs are versus mine. Basically mine is the angry dragon. This really shows off a great quality room build and dampening. I learned some crazy things with my acoustic panels. A) They do not remove the frequency I thought they did. B) They change pressure in a space "How I do not know!" What you feel isn't measured on a graph. C) Some panels are mostly show in certain places per REW. D) Room acoustics can change drastically in certain frequencies when adjusting your sound levels. "If an area is fighting each other, sound level change can dominate another" E) Each place in your theater has a different curve. F) Never trust a last minute setting change without checking it.

Hi there Youthman. It’s wonderful that you’re taking us all through the REW process. I have two svs pb-4000’s and I am presently moving them around my room trying to find the optimal location. My room is roughly 24 x 11 and I find that I’m not getting that feel it in your chest impact I should be getting. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy with them and they shake my room when needed. I must have a null at my main seating location because while the subs are active and my room is pressurizing I just don’t feel it in my seat like I should. I am definitely going to play with the phase adjustments and go from there. But I will definitely be purchasing a mic along with the REW program. My question is this - do I run Audyssey first and then run REW after, or REW first followed by Audyssey. I absolutely love your videos Youthman! It’s wonderful that we all can share our experiences with home theater and at the same time gather useful informative information. keep them coming.

I’m about to go through this process with my two r-115SWs. Got the mic you recommended. My room is not a regular shape, so I don’t know if the standard “go-too” positions will work. Do you think I should just start measuring different spots with one sub and then start playing around with the top spots? Or is that a fools errand because how one sub measured by itself may become irrelevant once the second is introduced and so I have to be playing with both to have any real indication? Nothing I have read has been clear on this. Thanks youthman.

Great video on sub placement. So many people place subs in corners but as you have shown it doesn't always work in every room. I would say that trying to adjust phase on one sub when both are on the same plane or distance from the listener would totally give suckout. When it was behind the seat on the side, I would guess that it would probably take a phase of about 60 to 80 degrees (only a guess without measurements). Tough to adjust or fine tune with a 0 or 180 only degree switch verses a phase switch with variable adjustments. Like using a blunt adjustment. That's where Klipsch saves some money. Still a great bang for the buck.

just purchased the umik 1 and downloaded REW, set up the calibration files etc and started doing some sweeps with my dual sb-2000 stacked behind a corner settee (protected from kids and animals) in an 8x4 meter long L shaped room where my listening position is on the back wall central in the room. relevant to this i found that movies were great with the subs but music lower octaves wasnt. The results showed me a null inbetween 27 and 32 hz (which I have plans to address)but a huge peak at 16.8hz. So just for fun i did some tests going up in increments of 3db and at 113 db at 16.8hz no signs of decay (10hz is now approaching 100db) at 115db at 16.8hz the line at 10hz started to show decay. I was suprised at the results so thought I would share, in addition to this ive ordered a db meter just to confirm (to myself) the accuracy

Nice vid. Putting aside the graph...how does it sound. Do you really notice a lack of bass presence in the frequency range where there is a null that you mentioned? If not why worry. Where you have the mic placed. Is that where you normally sit? It’s hard to please all pertaining to seating arrangement. If you’re going to say yes related to bass null with your own ears then here are my observations: 1. Your subs are possibly too big and it’s questionable you even need two for your room size. In the vid those are Klipsche? In the description link it says you have SVS PB16? Do you like deep bass? I think we all do. It seems in the graph your deep sub 30hz is good but there is a dip at the range you mentioned which seems to bother you. 2. How does the graph look with no subs. You have towers with 2 8 inch driver each? That in itself should produce solid bass down to 30-40hz easy. If you’re not getting the bass perhaps look into a separate power amp to drive the front mains. If you are then maybe you only need one sub. 3. The only real options for your sub placement is front next to center channel like where you have at the beginning or perhaps right corner rear or left corner rear? You should consider 45 degree angle too not 90 degree for right or left rear. Nice set up. 👍

Ah sure it’s a small world now with social media how times have changed, I must confess the best addition was really moving from xt to xt32, that really tame the bass in my setup and made it really tight, the dsp was just the icing on the cake, I’m sure you read your fare share of guides it’s just trial and error after that, the best tips I can give you is not to boost any peaks and use as few Ed as possible, the dsp website has good guides on dual subs, I just got the one sub sb2000 as it’s a smallish room and only need one sweet spot, your room is a lot more difficult gene from aduiaholics got his room perfect through Dsp Slainte from 🇮🇪

@youthman what exactly would the minidsp 2x4’s be used for exactly? Is it a necessary piece of equipment?
@Youthman
@Youthman 4 года назад
In a nutshell, it’s an EQ that sits between your receiver and your subs. After running REW, you send that data to the MiniDSP and it applies DSP to the signal before its sent to the subwoofers. It’s not necessary, but everyone that has owned one says it’s an incredible tool. I just need to learn how to use it before I can implement it into my system

The phase setting should only be changed in the first and second configuration with a sub in the front and one in the back. The first setup the sub on the sidewalk was at an 90 angle to the sub in the front. The available adjustment on the klipsch won’t help much in that case. The second had the subs facing each other but that placement put them 180 degrees out of phase with changing any settings, resulting in loss in output. In that positioning one should have been set to zero and the other to 180 so they could effectively work together. Also timing needs to be adjusted. If the subs are sharing the same wall as in the front the typically the phase on both subs should be the same. When there is one sub in the front and one in the rear then phase on one should be changed to prevent cancellations. Otherwise they are fighting each other rather than working together. The last positioning of the subs should have had both subs either set at zero or 180. Gene explains it better than I can here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8XE1JsfqKtA.html

@tkcdac 5 лет назад
Actually, just stating a phase change isn't as easy as that. REW can tell you if it does more harm that good. Each room is different. I have a front and rear placement, and upon changing I created a big null at 50-80 hz. Ended up having to change it back again to "0". Youthman is doing some good stuff with REW as the tools reveal so much that was almost 6th sense and preference before.

If subwoofers were truly omnidirectional, it really shouldn’t matter where you place it, because the sound and frequency would be the same in any position, wouldn’t it?
@cjt74
@cjt74 5 лет назад
Youthman this is where variable phase option comes in extremely handy. Those placement recommendations are taking advantage of boundary gains in the room by placing the sub on actual walls. The problem your front and rear positioning aren’t truly front and rear of the room. That could be attributing to the loss in output but as I said earlier time alignment also needs to be done. The varying distances between the mic and subs will mess up readings as well. Proper delay needs to be added to ensure the sound from each sub reaches the mic at the same time or cancellations will occur as well. Proper placement of the sub via SPL meter LFE content should be done first to find the best placement locations otherwise you end up doing more work than necessary and cheating yourself of output due to the poor placement.

Each sub, a third of the way down each sidewall facing each other should work well.

When you move one to the back put one on 180 and the other on O that's when one sub Is up front and one sub is in the back of the room

Gotcha. That makes sense. I have never really used phase. I did try changing it when I was playing around with one sub on the rear riser but don’t recall it making any difference (at least positive)

Ok and good Job with them in the same phase the sound waves cancel out each other when you move the sub front to back

You can also play with the subwoofer distance in your receiver. Even a small bump like 2 - 3 feet can have a good effect on smoothing out the curves. Something that is also important is measuring speaker + sub and checking the integration. Sometimes 100hz gives smooth response while 80hz may give you dips.

both out of phase is the same as both in phase, you needed to try putting the other one out of phase,

My subwoofer is placed in the corner and the bass is so much better than when it was in the front center.

You should try Dirac Live. That's the best software to adapt every single speaker. And you can change the curves the way you like to have it stalled in by a filter. Not only the frequency but also the impuls you can measure it for your room. When you hear the difference you never wanna go back again. It change every single measurement you made before. Try it for yourself.

Although, I don't fully agree with this guy on multiple subs being bad, provided the placement makes them work right. Something you are actively evaluating. If you have the money for two, it's not bad!
