As someone who did not have any privacy growing up (doors weren’t allowed to be closed, no knocking, phones and laptop passwords needing to be known well until I was 18, and a curfew until I was 19. Food was monitored, backpacks were gone through, friends couldn’t come over, never had a sleepover, etc.) I’ll tell you one thing, I have absolutely zero contact with my biological parents and don’t plan to ever again. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Idk I agree with a lot of what she says, but she is way too extreme. Sure if your child violates trust take things away and give them things to do to earn the trust back. Like if they are good to their siblings and come home right after school for a month give them their door back. Maybe have them get a part time job or do chores to learn responsibility, give them something else back and so one. Ruby is taking it to the extreme is when the kids violate the parents trust you lost it for good until that child is well into adulthood and that's not right...in fact it goes against scripture they teach. Also if you believe your child is keeping something harmful in her journal...talk to them about it and explain how harmful thoughts are not healthy and to talk to a parent about them. Also after talking ask them if it's okay if they go through the journal together. If she says no say okay I'm disappointed you don't want to share but you can always talk to me about anything good or bad and regardless I will always love you...doesn't mean consequences won't happen

But I literally still remember how I felt then, 20 years later. What did she do? Told me why she was concered, discussed online safety, let me keep my account, did not look at it. Here we are now and I tell her EVERYTHING. We've even now read my old journals together for some good laughs. Things could have been much different. Ruby is literally clueless

She said something in one of her videos that parents should not be expected to pay for their kids’ college and that they should work to pay for it themselves. I’m not Mormon but I’m praying for the day all her kids get together, get a lawyer and sue her into oblivion, normally I would not ever cheer for children to harm and disrespect their parents in that way, but Ruby is such a narcissistic, self absorbed butt hole, that she doesn’t know respect is earned even by parents, her kids made her ALL her $$ on RU-vid if she hadn’t exploited her children, for bra shopping, shaving ect… all her totally inappropriate video’s she wouldn’t have made even 5% of the money she made. Ruby wanted to be the star but she wasn’t her kids were. Her taking down Chad’s Instagram page was a clear example of how she was only ok with the child exploitation when she was profiting off it, if it was doing something like giving her child a self esteem boost well she couldn’t have that now could she, she is an awful parent and I hope her kids get the money they deserve for her selling their childhood.

I remember as a pre teen, my mother (who was extremely emotionally and mentally abusive) read my diary by breaking into it while I was at school. My thoughts were so light hearted and special to me. I cried so hard and felt so violated, and she made me feel so shameful for being a human with feelings and thoughts. When I had my son, I made it my mission to never make him feel the same. We are very close. He's a teenager and over time I went from cautiously monitoring him for safety, to viewing his independent choices, to ESTABLISHING trust and not violating it- While SIMULTANEOUSLY reminding him to make good decisions. He let me know he appreciated me for that. Parents need to understand the difference between monitoring kids for SAFETY vs violating privacy. It is a very intimate thing and really makes people, regardless of age, feel secure, helps to build self esteem, and actually can make children feel more comfortable to be open with you. This female, Ruby, is absurd.

When I was worried about my daughter when she was 17, because there was so many signs that she was being abused by her boyfriend, I had my 12 year old watch her unlock her phone so I could read their messages. And it was awful. I was horrified at the things he was doing to her but I couldn’t do anything other than love her because I had invaded her privacy and it was WRONG. I knew that. And I couldn’t tell her because I knew it would push her away from me. She’s 26 now, married to a wonderful man with a precious baby, and now I have told her what I did. She’s like Tyson on that she doesn’t hold any grudges and she has told me how bad her life was at the time. All you can do as a parent is be available for your children when they come to you, by open to what they say to you, love them unconditionally, hold your shock down so they don’t clam up, and never judge them. Comfort them, trust them and be there to pick up the pieces when they need you. This woman is disgusting and it’s alarming that she is giving advice. Reading your child’s journal is definitely going to become a core memory. I started to write journals since I was 8, I am a very sensitive person so I felt a lot of emotions everyday and the only way to express them safely was through journaling *I wasn’t very close to my parents since I was raised by my grandparents until I was 7. I still remember that one day when I was 9 years old woke up to my mom not only reading my personal diary out loud but to all my relatives who are the most gossip thirsty mf’s I know. I knew from then that she had been frequently reading my journals and sharing the contents with her friends and relatives, which was mortifying. So I did come up with a solution and that is I created my own language & code to write my journal in, the only person who is ever going to be able to read that journal was me. It took a while to become “fluent” but it was so worth it. However I did feel guilty for doing this because I was so concerned of disobeying my parents *btw my parents also took off the doors of my room AND bathroom, I didn’t know that it was weird until i had my bf at 19 years old. I didn’t know until I left my family for uni, that my experience was considered a violation of privacy & I grew up in a constant state of anxiety, being scared of disobeying them, because it was “their house, their rules” my parents also have never apologized, and it’s so true because I have no sense of humility. I struggled a lot in relationships (friendships, romantic relationships) because I didn’t know WHEN to apologize
@Lenci_the_Nugget

OMG I did that too! I still know how to write in that language. Totally worth it. I learned how to do ‘joined up ‘ writing backwards, a bit like mirror writing only I still wrote from right to left. So even if my diary was found, they’d have had to use a mirror and go word by word, and I threw ‘nonsense’ words into every line. I wasn’t writing about doing anything bad, but I had a pretty difficult childhood which I couldn’t talk to anyone about, so I put my feelings down on paper and I didn’t want ANYONE ever reading it. Thankfully I don’t believe anyone ever tried to read it. It was locked and very well concealed, but I NEEDED that outlet, it pretty much saved my life. Btw Josh, thank you for correctly pronouncing tw@t. I wondered if Canadians mispronounced it like many Americans, who seen to rhyme it with trot and cot rather than cat and flat! Once my brother found my safe key and wanted to open my safe and my dad punished him ( he couldnt watch TV for a week) and told him that no matter what you are never allowed to look or snoop around anyones private things. and we are christians. my dad never once broke the trust and that what made me realize what boundaries are and what love really is. when I told something i was conserned about to my mom or dad they always asked is it okey if I talk about it to my wife/husband. i trusted them more than I can say and still do.

Doesn’t believe in her kids having privacy, then proceeds to share personal intimate details of their life for money. Hope she’s saving some of that money to send her kids to the therapy they’re going to desperately need. But she strikes me as someone who doesn’t believe in therapy because “God is in control.” She could definitely benefit from a mental health evaluation herself. And that’s not to shame her. She needs help.

I agree, she need professional help for her own good and for her kids sake. I used to watch the vlogs and always taught she and her husband were too strict, but now I feel like it has gotten worse. She has extreme trust issues: she cut off her extended family, seems to reject the outside world, doesnt trust school, her kids admitted not having any friends, and now she doesn’t even trust her own kids not wanting to give them privacy… I don’t want to jump into conclusions but sounds to me she developed some sort of social anxiety or maybe this family got caught up in a cult. Either way that’s not good and those kids deserve a better life.

My mom looked at my private journal when i was a teenager. I grew up very controlled and i wasn't really free to express emotions, so i let it all out in my diary. I was grounded for its content for a month. I made up a "code" so that no one could read it except me, and when my parents found out they burned it and didn't allow me to keep a journal anymore. I was 15.

Wow. I am actually terrified for those kids. I think it's really dangerous that Ruby seems to think there's a one size fits all approach to parenting, thats ridiculous. Even within the same household every kid is different, and their relationship with their parents should be unique to them. I'm 20 now and in college, and I just know a parenting approach like this would have sent me down the wrong path. I was extremely independent and liked making decisions for myself, but luckily I was also a good kid and made generally good decisions, so my parents gave me that leeway. They always trusted me and gave me the freedom that I showed them I could handle. I just can't imagine what it would feel like to Ruby's kids being constantly not good enough in their parents eyes, constantly under scrutiny and not even worth an ounce of freedom/privacy.

I am so glad that I decided to not follow the trend of looking at my children’s text messages, social media accounts and looked for things in their rooms. Kids need their privacy and they need to make mistakes. I let them close their doors and always knocked before going into THEIR room. I did not tell them it was my house. My children did not ask to be born, I choose to have them. The least I could do was show them respect. Parents do not own children.

I am so thankful my parents weren’t like this! As a child and teen, I knew a family who adopted kids and once they got to their teen years, “couldn’t handle them” and they essentially asked the police to “help” them and take them to jail. One kid even went back to live with their birth parents AFTER ADOPTION and had no contact with the parents who adopted them after that. I remember always being confused.. how is jail going to fix them being sassy or getting mad? And thinking if I was sent to jail for being a teenager I would be so mad and hate everyone even more. I totally understand jail for a real crime but jail is not a time out for attitude, getting angry, ect. Ect.

He has your mannerisms! Love it! I have a 15 year old stepson who we struggle with so much. He is the literal best student (first in his class 4.3 gpa freshman year) but he constantly messes up with real life. A few weeks ago he stole gunny worms from a theme park.... He used to lie and stay up until 2am talking to his girlfriend on the phone... Idk if this is "normal" because I had a strict upbringing with lack of privacy and no phone until I was 18. We struggle with trying to ride that line of giving him responsibility and privacy without letting him think he has control (cause, yeah still a kid!) We also coparent with someone completely opposite making the whole thing super volatile. Not sure why I'm sharing just looking someone else to validate that being a parent to a teen is HARD!!! And everyone messes up sometimes!

It's really a shame when parents feel that it's ok the violate trust that deeply. Then several years later a boyfriend admitted to reading my diary when he found it. Didn't bother me as much as knowing my parents had gone into my room and searched it when I wasn't home, but still don't understand the lack of basic boundaries and respect that people can have.

There is no way that Ruby actually shows affection to her children. They must feel so unloved. Ruby has no clue about West Point. There is privacy, it's a college after all. The government is sinking a lot of money into each cadet, unless this cadet was going out of their way to not wear the correct uniform they wouldn't be expelled. Getting onto the campus requires a reason to be there and an ID. Nobody is trying to break into West Point either Ruby. Maybe the US Mint West Point Facility.

Regarding the whole journal thing, this has just crossed my mind, if the parent reads it then it could stop the child using a fabulous tool getting her thoughts and feelings on paper. So what does the child do now???? The thoughts and feelings are still going around somewhere, then come out as self harm or other behaviours. If as a parent, you have concerns, allow space for conversation. You don't necessarily need to read the journal. Also as a parent - are you prepared for what you are going to read, it could be really great or be really bad. So what are you going to do?? This statement applies to so many situations in life - just because we can does it mean we should. Yes you can read journal, does it mean you should.......????? I would love to know what Ruby's kids think and feel now that they are no longer vlogging day to day life BUT their mom (and dad) are in this Mom's of Truth and Connexions. I think "newer" stuff is worse!! Josh, thank you for what you do.

I was a teenager in the 80’s so parents didn’t have to deal with cell phones or social media but child privacy issues were still a thing. Personally, my Mother absolutely respected our privacy so we never kept anything from her. So, yeah, the more you respect your kids privacy, the the less they will try to hide. Would Ruby be ok with her kids reading her journal?! Or going through her purse? Of course not. Not because she has anything to hide but because IT’S PRIVATE!!!!!! Kids deserve privacy just like adults do. Ruby is giving parenting advice here, but 14 months later, you, Ruby Franke, just pleaded guilty to torturing your children!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, you forced her out at 18, forced her to go to college where her father teaches, and won’t allow her to live at home while attending school. Just because your child survived to adulthood does not make some kind of expert on parenting. Who told you to do this? Who told you the world needed your parenting advice?
