Ruby is a caring person and her change from comedic entertainer to teaching about Mental Illness is inspiring and yes still funny at times. Her personal challenges then education at Oxford gives her a truly genuine platform to speak about what she knows for fact. Thank you, Ruby.

Carrie Fisher also gave similarly wonderful talks about and shared mental health insights. Excellent lessons.

Excellent, I only wish if the interviewer would let her talk more, instead of constant interrupting - sometimes it's hard to follow...

I had been watching everything I could find with Carrie Fisher, so You Tube brought up a couple of clips with Ruby Wax (Wachs). In the U.S., I hadn't come across her before. I looked up her Wikipedia entry out of curiosity and found the mental health part of her career on You Tube also. I am inspired by midlife education and reinvention of self - breaking free of "the past is prologue." Carrie Fisher and Ruby Wax are helping me toward a support group for Hoarding OCD. I am trying to get unstuck and realize the counter-productivity of the internalized shame and self-reproach. The interviewers quote was just laying on more of those voices externally. If someone without depression thinks that it is indulgences of the privileged classes, they have themselves been sheltered from the suffering of the multitudes that may not have the platform and the vehicle to be heard that this woman has. She doesn't have to be perfect. I do see that the interviewer had compassion for the parents who survived the diaspora of the Holocaust. Now it is time to have compassion for the intergenerational effects also.

It's called Hard Talk because the whole point is to challenge the guests. Play devils advocate if you will. Challenge the guest to make the best point for their argument possible. This is true of all Hard Talk episodes. It really isn't personal.

Listening to this I believe that Ruby Wax has truly evolved in her mindset. Like on a whole different level and that gets all my respect. If more high profile celebrities take up such causes it goes some way to provide purpose for them being where they are in the first place. Sackur here mentions Janet Street Porter's criticism of such disciplines in the context of psychology. Janet, who would like to think of herself as the working classes de-facto columnist is in the business of heckling and antagonizing complex topics; she does this simply because in some way she believes this ups herself to a level worthy of praise. It is not a very beneficial way to be at all. If you want to know more about this truly intriguing subject - Neuroplasticity, along with reading up on Ruby Wax's scholarly takes, and I am sure more gems will come; also research the likes of Norman Doidge and Gabor Mate. Gabor is my favorite read/speaker though, the studies he has done should be made available to parents everywhere.

Aren't these interviewers irritating? Do they genuinely believe that this aggressive, rude, brusque method of interviewing people who have something valid to say is what viewers want to see? Well done Ruby for getting her message across without too much distraction from him.

The misnomer is, as this interviewer seems to infer, that if you understand your brain you will no longer suffer from its illness, As Ruby so correctly points out you learn yourself and your triggers and recognise them earlier and hopefully can put the sandbags up before the deluge begins. She is brave because as the interviewer intimated, and what people who suffer depression all the time face, 'what do you have to be depressed about...?' And she doesn't fly across the table or just weep. Would love a chat over coffee or wine with Ruby.

I do have it all the time. I have persistent depressive disorder. I've never been without it, and have greater periods of double depression. Nobody gets that, especially most other people with depression. Its really exhausting and has nearly killed me so many times over the years. This time I think it will. Nobody gets it.

Have never watched Hard Talk, so I don't know if Steven Sacker(?) just has this confrontational interview style, but it does seem like he was on the attack for most of it. I'm gaining a fondness for Ruby Wax, but many of the interviews I've seen have been rehashing a lot of the same material. Perhaps he was being "hard" because he wanted to see if she could cough up something new or break character somehow. Thats the only reason I could see bringing up a barb of that nature toward the end, to entice Ruby Wax into making an interesting sound clip they could use for teasers. I do agree with many points Ruby Wax makes, in particular that mental illness is not like the cold or flu. You don't take a few pills or get bed rest and it goes away on its own. Its a part of the structure like a crooked window or door that opens to nowhere. Passers by will look up and say "Well SOMEONE fucked up" and keep going...until you start to notice there are a LOT of crooked windows and doors to nowhere. Mindfulness is not ignoring the windows and doors. By visualizing other possibilities you can turn the flaws into features. Medication can help, therapy can help, but more than anything the stigma of imperfection has to be dealt with. Ruby does it through humor, and I wish her nothing but the best, she has her work cut out for her when facing the Steves of the world.

Being in a state of depression is akin to being in the darkest and deepest cave with no stimuli to activate the senses and only swirling bats around your head for company.... ....That's my impression of it! A fucking monstrous illness and one I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy! Chris (UK).

There's something "repellant" about suffering from depression if you're part of the middle-class? Why? Because for Janet Street Porter money equals happiness? That goes to show the kind of person this Janet is.
